This hukamnama begins in Soohee Raag. Soohee Raag is a Raag of complete undying love. In Soohee Raag there is a feeling of complete closeness with the Divine Creator or Being.

Firstly, the musical measure this shabad is written in, is all about undying love, a love that can never be extinguished by anything.

Secondly, this shabad is written by Siri Guru Ram Das ji. Siri Guru Ram Das ji, the great lover of the world, who had true love in his heart and who had true humility in everything that he did.

The first line of the hukamnama, jihvaa har ras rahee aghaa-ay, which means my tongue, my jihvaa, jihvaa meaning tongue, har ras rahee aghaa-ay, aghaa-ay means is fulfilled, is satisfied, my tongue has been satisfied by meditating upon the name of the Lord. What does this really mean? This means all those desires, all those pent up feelings, all those pent up emotions, all those things which were bottled up inside myself, all those desires, all those emotions, all those feelings which were negative, they have been completely wiped out through meditation. There is none of those negative desires left.

gurmukh peevai sahj samaa-ay, is the next line; gurmukh, person who follows the Guru, faces towards the Guru, he drinks, he takes in this ambrosial nectar of meditation and he achieves complete heavenly peace. You can only be at peace, when your mind is at peace. That is why everyone says “peace of mind”, but the only way to achieve peace of mind is through meditation, on Waheguru.

har ras jan chaakhahu jay bhaa-ee, O my brothers, O servants of God, jan, bhaa-ee, O my brothers, Guru ji is saying to us, O my brothers, ras jan chaakhahu jay bhaa-ee, if you ever taste this complete, beautiful, ambrosial nectar of God’s meditation, of God’s Name, what will happen?

ta-o kat anat saad lobhaa-ee, then you have no desires left, for any other false, worldly flavors. What does this mean? This means that you won’t have greed, you won’t have ego, you won’t have lust, you won’t have attachment and you won’t have anger, because all these things are created by our greed and desire for worldly things.

rahaa-o, Pause and Think about this, this is the main part of the shabad.

gurmat ras raakho ur Dhaar, gurmat ras means the nectar of the Guru’s teaching. What is the nectar of the Guru’s teaching? The nectar of the Guru’s teaching is love; keep the Guru’s teachings, raakho ur Dhaar, in your heart at all times.

har ras raatay rang muraar, then you will be completely imbued in this nectar of the Lord and whilst you will be imbued in the nectar of the Lord, you will be in complete bliss.

manmukh har ras chaakhi-aa na jaa-ay, but those who follow their mind and not the Guru, they can never taste this har ras, because if you follow the mind, your mind falls into desires, your mind does not want that union with God, because that union with God means that your mind has to die, according to Gurbani, man marai dhaath mar jaeai, in Gurbani it says, bin man mueeai, kaise har paaey. It does not mean that your mind physically dies, it means on a spiritual level, you are now in control of your mind and your mind does not want this.

ha-umai karai bahutee milai sajaa-ay, that is why the ego inside the persons who follow their mind get greater and greater; bahutee milai sajaa-ay, and they find punishment within themselves. By meeting the Guru and by keeping the gurmat inside you, you can take away that ego.

nadar karay taa har ras paavai, only if God showers His Grace upon you, then you are blessed with His meditation, with His great ambrosial nectar.

naanak har ras har gun gaavai, Nanak has been blessed with this ambrosial nectar of God’s meditation, of Hari’s meditation and in his ecstasy he sings the praises of God.

For any mistakes that I have made, please forgive me and please give us your blessings so that we may carry on this service for the Sadh Sangat.

I leave you with the rahaa-o, the main line of the shabad.

har ras jan chaakhahu jay bhaa-ee. ta-o kat anat saad lobhaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
