Today’s hukamnamma is in Raag Sorath, which is defined by a quality of strength, a feeling of faith that is so strong. Your faith is so strong that you follow what you believe. You do things not because you have to or want to, but because you’re engaging with it, becoming one with it. This strength of soul can be seen greatly in the Guru who wrote this shabad, Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji. Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji had that steadfastness about him. He had a spirit, like the spirit of Sorath Raag, when he sat on the hot plate during his martydom.

While reading this hukamnamma, take your mind into the whole feeling of Sorath Raag and meditate on Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji’s example.

“Simar simar parabh bha-ay anandaa dukh kalays sabh naathay.”

Simar, by remembering and meditating upon prabh (God), bha-ay anandaa. Anandaa means complete celestial bliss. We use anand very lightly in many contexts. When someone asks, “How are you?” you say, “I’m in anand.” But Guru Amar Das  ji says in Anand Sahib , “Anandaa ananda sabh ko kahai, anand guroo tay jaane-aa.” The only way of realizing true peace of mind and true peace inside you is through meditation, because all other ways are temporary. Worldly peace only remains for a few seconds or minutes. The peace you get through a drug will only remain for a few hours and then it will go. The peace you get when you buy a new car, the satisfaction you get by buying a new T.V., will only remain for a few hours, and then you’ll get bored. The joy of meditation is that it is never gets boring. You go deeper and deeper into your own soul. Then you get anand, celestial peace.

"Dukh kalays sabh naathay.”

All –sabh, dukh  -pain, kalays -suffering. Kalays also means arguments within yourself. All of your internal and external pains, the pains of your mind, body and soul, so many pains are created because your soul feels lost. Our souls don’t get the food of naam that they need. "Dukh kalays sabh naathay.” All of the pains, all of the sufferings, all of the arguments within ourselves go.

”Gun gaavat Dhi-aavat parabh apnaa kaaraj saglay saaNthay. ||1||”

By singing the praises gun-praises, gaavat –singing. Dhi-aavat –focusing, meditating upon parabh, upon our Lord, upon our God. Aapnaa kaaraj saglay saaNthay. All our affairs, all that we do in our lives, God will bring it all into harmony. If we start meditating within, Guru and God will take care of all the worldly things. The day that we think that this house is ours, the day we think that this family belongs to us, we take on all responsibilities. The day we believe that this house belongs to God, our cars are God’s, that our families belong to God, then God will look after them. That’s when all our affairs are brought into harmony.

”Jagjeevan naam tumaaraa.”

Oh Waheguru Ji, your name is the life of the world, your name creates the world, your name keeps me alive. Guru Nanak Dev Ji says “Aakhaan jeevan, visrai mar jaa-o.” It brings life to the world spiritually and also physically. Spiritually the naam awakens us from inside, and physically Guru Amar Das ji says, in Maajh Mehlaa 3,Utpat parla-o sabday hovai. Sabday hee fir opat hovai.” Creation and destruction happen through the shabad. Through the shabad creation happens again. In Gurmut we believe that even the external creation happens through the vibration of the shabad.

”Gur pooray dee-o updaysaa jap bha-ojal paar utaaraa. rahaa-o.”

The perfect Guru, the true Guru (pooray means true and perfect), dee-o has given updaysaa, this message to me. Jap bha-ojal paar utaaraa. By meditating on God’s name you will cross this world ocean. ‘Bha-o’ means fear, ‘jal’ means ocean. This terrifying ocean, this fear-filled world ocean, paar utaaraa, is crossed over. Rahaa-o. Pause and meditate.

Toohai mantree suneh parabh toohai sabh kichh karnaihaaraa.”

Oh God, you are the advisor. You hear everything. ‘Mantree’ means advisor, ’suneh’ means listen, ‘parabh’ means Lord. Toohai sabh kichh karnaihaaraa. ‘Sabh’ means all, ‘kichh’ means everything, karnarhaaraa means the one who does everything. Karta Purakh. God is within all, listening through all. “Ghat ghat ke antar ki janat.” Guru Gobind Singh says in Chaaupai Sahib. He knows each and every heart.

Too aapay daataa aapay bhugtaa ki-aa ih jant vichaaraa. ||2||”

You are the giver and the taker, what else can we do? ‘Daataa’ means giver, ‘bhugtaa’ means the one who takes, who enjoys. ‘Vichaaraa’ means poor, ‘jant’ means creature. What can this poor human being do? You are the one who is working through everyone.

”Ki-aa gun tayray aakh vakhaanee keemat kahan na jaa-ee.”

How many of your praises, how many of your virtues can I describe, oh God? Ki-aa means how many, gun means praises, aakh means to say, vakhaanee means to describe and speak of. The value of you, oh Waheguru ji, can not even be described.

”Paykh paykh jeevai parabh apnaa achraj tumeh vadaa-ee. ||3||”

Paykh paykh. By beholding you, jeevai, brings life to me. Those who are attuned with God, when they look at the world, they say “Balehaaree kudrat vase-aa. Tera ant na jaa-ee lakhe-aa.” Oh God, I am a sacrifice to you. I look at the animals, birds and trees and I see you. Achraj means wonderful and amazing, tumeh vadaa-ee. Vadaa-ee means greatness. Oh, your greatness is so amazing.

Dhaar anoograhu aap parabh savaamee pat mat keenee pooree.”

‘Anoograhu’ means grace, ‘dhaar’ means granting. God granted me his grace, ‘aap parabh savaamee’, and he saved my honour. ‘Pat’ means honor, ‘mat’ means intimate. Keenee pooree. He gave me the true honour, which is to honor everyone. He gave me the true mat, which is to love everyone.

“Sadaa sadaa naanak balihaaree baachha-o santaa Dhooree. ||4||13||63||”

Sadaa sadaa means forever and ever, Nanak balihaaree, Nanak is a sacrifice to you, oh God. Baachha-o santaa Dhooree. The only thing I ask for is the dust of the feet of the holy ones, those who are attuned to you.

The Naam is everything. God’s Naam, the name of God, will bring you back to life. Some days we feel dead, mentally, physically spiritually. The Naam, the shabad is the way to revitalize yourself. Don’t go and drink a cup of coffee, don’t go and try to cheer yourself up with a film. If you’re feeling down, the first thing you should do is try and engage with the Naam and feel Waheguru inside.

“Jagjeevan naam tumaaraa.
Gur pooray dee-o updaysaa jap bha-ojal paar utaaraa. rahaa-o."
