Today’s hukamnamma is by Guru Nanak Dev Ji and is in Raag Dhanaasree. Dhanaasree Raag being a raag of total carefreeness, losing all worries, being in "incht", relaxing, relaxing into our natural state of harmony and peace.
"Ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad."
There is One Universal Creative Being. Who is forever true "sat", and is found in "gurparsaad", through the Guru’s grace.
"Tirath naavan jaa-o tirath naam hai."
"Tirath" means pilgrimage. "Jaa-o" means to go to and "naavan" means to bathe at. Sikhs once asked Guru Nanak, "What holy place should we bathe at? What’s the pilgrimage for us?" The idea at that time was to travel to a holy place, and have a bath at that holy place so that your sins could be washed away. Guru Nanak said, "tirath naam hai" The true pilgrimage, the true holy shrine, is the name of the lord. "Hai" means is and "naam" means the name of the Lord.
"Tirath sabad beechaar antar gi-aan hai."
The holy pilgrimage is the "sabad". "Beechaar." "Beechaar" means the wisdom of, the enjoyment of. "Sabad" means the word, the naam. The true pilgrimage is the "sabad", enjoying, becoming one with the sabad. "Antar gi-aan hai." As you bathe in the naam, as you wash away your sins with the name of God… Inside you "antar", the wisdom inside you awakens. ("Gian" means spiritual wisdom.)
"Gur gi-aan saachaa thaan tirath das purab sadaa dasaahraa."
The Guru’s sacred wisdom is true. "Thaan tirath" means the sacred shrine of pilgrimage. "Das purab" means ten festivals. "Das" means ten and "purab" mean festivals. Ten festivals are celebrated. "Dasaahraa" means celebrated, at all times "sada". The spiritual knowledge of the Guru is the true holy shrine of pilgrimage, and when you enshrine that in your soul, and in your heart, then according to Hindu mythology, there are ten festivals to observe, to go and bathe at. But Guruji says that on those pilgrimages, you only go on the days of the ten festivals, but inside you when you have that spiritual wisdom, the ten festivals are always being celebrated inside you.
There is also another meaning in the last word of this line. "Das" means ten. Now on us there are ten indrees, basically ten senses, we have ten senses according to gurbani. "Hraa" means to win. Guruji is saying you can win over those ten senses, that take you into maya. You can internalize those ten senses and use them to find God.
"Ha-o naam har kaa sadaa jaacha-o dayh parabh DharneeDharaa."
"Hao" -I. Naam means the name of the Lord. "Har" means God and "kaa" means of. "Sadaa" means always. "Jaacha-o" means I beg for. "Dayh" please give to me. "Parabh" Oh Lord. "DharneeDharaa" one who protects, the one who sustains. Oh God, who sustains the world, please give me the naam, which I beg for constantly.
"Sansaar rogee naam daaroo mail laagai sach binaa."
"Sansaar" means the world. "Rogee" means is sick, ill, diseased. "Naam" the name of God, is the medicine "daaroo". "Mail" is filth. "Laagai" means sticks to, accumulates. "Sach bina." Without the truth. Without the truth the world is being engrossed in even more filth. We can’t see what is true, we only see what is false. That’s why we’re sick and the only way to cure this and bring truth in us is to take the medicine of "Satnam", and bring God within us.
"Gur vaak nirmal sadaa chaanan nit saach tirath majnaa. ||1||"
"Vaak" means word. "Gur" means Guru. The word of the Guru, "nirmal", is pure. "Sadaa chaanan". "Chanan" means to radiate light. "Nit saach tirath majnaa." The words of the Guru always radiate light. In these words of pure light of the Guru "nit saach", everyday always bathe ("majnaa" means to bathe) in "saach tirath", the true pilgrimage. The words of the Guru bring light to you, constantly repeat these words, for they’ll make your soul immaculate.
"Saach na laagai mail ki-aa mal Dho-ee-ai."
"Saach" means the truth. "Na laagai". Does not get attached to. "Mail" means filth. Filth does not get attached to the truth. "Ki-aa mal dho-ee-ai." "Ki-aa" means what "mal" means filth. "Dho-ee-ai" means do they have to wash off. The ones who attach to the name of the Lord, their whole lives become truth, and because of that, filth can not attach to them. Filth can not stick to the one who is in tune with "Satnam", the true one.
"Guneh haar paro-ay kis ka-o ro-ee-ai."
"Guneh" means virtue "haar" means a garland, "paro-ay" means to wear. "Kis ka-o ro-ee-ai." "Kis" means for who or what should we cry. There’s no reason to cry or regret anything once we tune ourselves to the true one. Because once we attain ourselves to the true one, we take that garland of virtues and put it around our neck.
"Veechaar maarai tarai taarai ulat jon na aav-ay."
Our own thought. "Veechaar maarai." The one who conquers, kills his own thoughts and listen to the Gurus thoughts, "tarai" he not only saves himself, "taarai" but he saved others. "Ulat jon" means to be born, to come back again," "na aav-ay" does not come back again. The person who conquers himself, "Man jeetai jag jeet." One who wins over his mind, wins over the world. He does not have to come back to this earth.
"Aap paaras param Dhi-aanee saach saachay bhaav-ay."
"Aap paaras." He becomes the "aap paaras", the philosopher’s stone. The philosopher’s stone which can transform leads into gold. The person in touch with the truth, he can transform people around him into gold. He can bring them into that light as well. "Param dhi-aanee" means the highest meditator. That person reaches the true level of med who conquers his own self. "Saach saachay bhaav-ay." This true person, "saachay bhaav-ay". "Bhaav-ay" means pleasing to. This person truly pleases the Lord.
"Aanand an-din harakh saachaa dookh kilvikh parharay."
"Aanand" means celestial ecstasy. "An –din" means night and day. That person is night and day in celestial ecstasy. They find the true harmony within themselves, the true happiness. "Dookh" means pain. "Kilvikh" means sins. "Parharay" means taken away. That person is in true ecstasy day and night, and all their pains and sins are taken away.
"Sach naam paa-i-aa gur dikhaa-i-aa mail naahee sach manay. ||2||"
"Sach" the true name. That person has found the true name. Why? How did they find the true name? Because the Guru showed them. "Dikhaa-i-aa" means to show. "Mail naahee sach manay." "Mail naahee." "Mail" means filth "naahee" means there is no, "sach manay". When the mind is attuned to the truth, the sach…
"Sangat meet milaap pooraa naavno."
"Sangat" means the holy congregation. "Meet" oh friend, "milaap" means to meet with them. Oh my friend meet with the holy congregation. "Pooraa" means the totally perfect. "Naavno" means bathe. If you want to bathe in the total cleaning bath that cleans you inside and out, then meet with the holy sangat, those who sing the praises of the Guru.
"Gaavai gaavanhaar sabad suhaavano."
"Gaavai" to sing. "Gaavanhaar" means the singer. The singer who sings the praises of the holy lord,…"suhaavano" means to be decorate with. "Sabad" means the shabad, the word. That person who sings the praises of the God, is adorned, is decorated with the shabad inside them.
"Saalaahi saachay man satgur punn daan da-i-aa matay."
"Saalaahi" means to sing the praises of . "Saachay" means of the true Lord. Sing the praises of the true Lord, worship the true one. "Man satgur." Believe everything that the Guru says. That’s the only way on this path, if we believe everything that the Guru says. "Punn daan da-i-aa matay." This is the true way. This is the greatest. "Punn daan" means gifts to charity, or good deeds. And the greatest act of compassion…da-i-aa means compassion.
"Pir sang bhaavai sahj naavai baynee ta sangam sat satay."
"Pir" means the husband Lord, "sang" means with, to have love with," bhaavai" means the one who is in love with. The one who is in love with the husband Lord, that person bathes in "sehaj". "Sehaj" means celestial harmony, divine harmony, that soul bride who love her Husband Lord bathes in celestial harmony. "Baynee ta sangam sat satay." According to Hindu mythology, you get much out of bathing at a place where the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers converge. That’s called a tribaynee, that place, where they all come together, all three rivers. But Guru ji is saying that tribaynee is within you, and why are you bathing at external tribaynees when the true tribaynee is internal. "Baynee ta sangam sat satay." If you want to bathe at the true tribaynee then go inside yourself, and you will find inside yourself where those three places converge.
"AraaDh aykankaar saachaa nit day-ay charhai savaa-i-aa."
"Araadh" means to worship, worship and adore. "Aykankaar" the one who is Ik Ong Kar, the One Creative Being. "Saachaa" who is true. "Nit day-ay charhai savaa-i-aa." He’s constantly giving to us. "Nit" means constantly, "day-ay" means giving. "Charhai savaa-i-aa" means his gifts do not deplete. We give a gift to someone, and after twenty years that gift breaks, and we have to throw it away. But when God gives gifts, they are constantly flourishing. Constantly flourishing.
"Gat sang meetaa santsangat kar nadar mayl milaa-i-aa. ||3||"
"Gat."Salvation, liberation of the soul, how is it achieved? "Sang meetaa santsangat." "Sang" means to associate with. Oh my friend, if you want to be librated, associate with the society of the saints. "Sangat" means society and "sant" means saint. "Kar nadar." God will bestow his grace upon us, "mayl milaa-i-aa" and bless us with union into himself.
"Kahan kahai sabh ko-ay kayvad aakhee-ai."
"Kahan kahai." Many people talk. "Kahan" means to speak and to talk. "Sabh" means all. "Ko-ay" means one. Everyone talks and speaks. "Kayvad aakhee-ai." "Kayvad" means how great you are, "aakhee-ai" means to say. But no one can say how great your are, oh God, for you are beyond us mere mortals.
"Ha-o moorakh neech ajaan samjhaa saakhee-ai."
"Ha-o" -I am, "moorakh" foolish. "Neech" lowly. "Ajaan" means ignorant. Why I am I foolish? Because I don’t follow what the Guru says. Why am I lowly? Because I have fallen from the path of truth that the Guru has given me. Why am I ignorant? Because I sit in the ignorance of my own mind and do not listen to and do not become one with what the Guru has said. Oh Guru, the only way I can understand "samjhaa" is through your teachings "saakhee-ai". Sakhee means teachings of the Guru.
"Sach gur kee saakhee amrit bhaakhee tit man maani-aa mayraa."
"Sach means true. "Gur" means guru. "Saakhee" means teachings. The teachings of the Guru are "amrit bhaakhee". "Amrit" means immortal nectar. "Bhaakhee" means whatever the Guru says. The Guru’s teachings, what the Guru says, is like "amrit." Somedays when we’re reading gurbani, we get this understanding, the bani seems so beautiful to us. This gurbani is "amrit", it’s a constant shower of immortal nectar. "Tit man maani-aa mayraa." "Man maani-aa mayraa" means my mind is pleased, and understands through this, the Guru’s teachings.
"Kooch karahi aavahi bikh laaday sabad sachai gur mayraa."
"Kooch karahi." People leave this world, "aavahi", come onto this world "bikh laaday". "Bikh" means poison. "Laaday" means loaded. People come one to this earth and they leave loaded with poison. What’s the poison? Haumai, ego, kam, lust, desire, krodh anger, ahankar. That’s the only reason why people come back into this world, and then they leave. Because of haumai. Guru Nanak says in Asa Di Vaar "Hau vich aee-ya, Hau vich gay-ee-a" In ego one is born again, in ego people leave. "Sabad sachai gur mayraa." The true shabad, the word of the true one, is only found through my Guru.
"Aakhan tot na bhagat bhandaaree bharipur rahi-aa so-ee."
"Aakhan tot." "Aakhan" means to say… "Aakhan tot" means there is no end. "Tot na" ‘tot" means end, "na" negates this. There is no end. "Bhagat" means devotion "bhandaaree" means treasure of. The treasure of devotion, which lies inside of us. There is no end of it. Why? "Bharipur rahi-aa so-ee." Because "bharipur". Everywhere the one Lord is pervading. "Rahi-aa so-ee." Through all, "soo-ee". Everywhere. How can the devotion end to that being who is through all?
"Naanak saach kahai baynantee man maaNjai sach so-ee. ||4||1||"
Nanak utters this true word, this true prayer, "baynantee" means prayer. "Man maajai". "Man" means mind and "maajai" means the one who purifies, who cleans this. Only that one who purifies their mind, "sach so-ee". "So-ee" means only that person, only he can attain the truth.
Guru Nanak is saying to us, the only way to atone ourselves for our sins, to liberate ourselves, to release ourselves, is through the naam, through the shabad. This world is burning without the name of the Lord. As the Guru’s Sikhs, as the followers of the Guru, as those who love the Guru, have devotion to the Guru, it’s up to us to bring love into our heart and bring this naam into our hearts, to purify ourselves, and purify those around us.
"Sansaar rogee naam daaroo mail laagai sach binaa. gur vaak nirmal sadaa chaanan nit saach tirath majnaa."
