Today’s hukamnamma is in raag vad-hans. The vadhans raag is traditionally the raag in which weddings songs were sung. The vadhans raag carries the feelings and aspirations of the young bride on her wedding day, as she looks forward, and she looks back. There’s happiness, and there’s sadness. There’s a whole mixture of emotions. Take yourself into those emotions through this shabad, and connect with the soul bride inside. It’s by Guru Ram Das Ji and it’s written in "chhant".
"Ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad."
There is one eternal creative being who is found through the True Guru’s grace.
"Mayrai man mayrai man satgur pareet lagaa-ee raam."
Oh my mind, oh my mind, you have been blessed with the love of the Lord, by the True Guru. "Man" -mind, "satgur" -True Guru -"lagaa-ee" is to be blessed with, graced with. If you’ll notice in this shabad, many lines end in raam. This is traditional for many old wedding songs in India. Guru Ram Das Ji is taking us into this idea of being in a spiritual marriage with the Lord.
"Har har har har naam mayrai man vasaa-ee raam."
The Name of the Lord, "har har", the one who makes all flourish in this world. "Vasaa-ee" means to enshrine, to encapsule, to become one with.
"Har har naam mayrai man vasaa-ee sabh dookh visaaranhaaraa."
The name of the Lord, har har, is enshrined within my heart with love. "Sabh" means all, "dookh" means pain. "Visaaranhaaraa" means the one who can make us forget all the pain. What Guruji is saying is, the people who have "har har" inside them, they may be cut up limb by limb, they may be going through the worst pain, but inside them they have great tranquility, nothing can destroy that.
"Vadbhaagee gur darsan paa-i-aa Dhan Dhan satguroo hamaaraa."
"Vadbhaagee" by great good fortune. I’ve been blessed with the Guru’s "darsan". "Darsan" means vision of the Guru. "Dhan dhan" blessed blessed. "Satgur." The True Guru. My True Guru is blessed.
"Oothat baithat satgur sayvah jit sayvi-ai saaNt paa-ee."
"Oothat, baithat." While standing while sitting, while doing everything, I serve the true Guru everywhere. Sewa of the Guru doesn’t begin in the Gurdwara, it’s done in our everday lives. How we live our lives, that’s the true sewa. "Jit sayvi-ai saaNt paa-ee." "Saat" means peace, tranquility, "paa-ee" means to find. By living my life in that mode of sewa, I have found peace.
"Mayrai man mayrai man satgur pareet lagaa-ee. ||1||"
The beginning line again comes back: Oh my mind, you have been blessed with the love of the True Guru.
"Ha-o jeevaa ha-o jeevaa satgur daykh sarsay raam."
I live (jeevaa means to live). "Daykh" means to behold, to see. I live by beholding my true, beautiful Guru.
"Har naamo har naam drirh-aa-ay jap har har naam vigsay raam."
The name of the Lord, Har, "drirh-aa-ay". Drirh-aa-ay means to plant within, to be blessed with internally. The Guru blesses me with the naam internally.
"Jap har har naam kamal pargaasay har naam navaN niDh paa-ee."
"Jap" -by doing the "jap", meditation of this "har har naam"…"Pargaasay" means to blossom, to come into the spring of. I blossom forth in the name of "har har". By doing the meditation of this "har har raam", the lotus of my soul blossoms forth. "Har naam navaN niDh paa-ee." Through the name of the Lord, "nava nidh", I have found the nine treasures of the world (internally, the true treasures).
"Ha-umai rog ga-i-aa dukh laathaa har sahj samaaDh lagaa-ee."
The disease of pride, of egotism, the "rog" ("rog" means disease)..they have gone! Because where there is amrit, there can not be poison. Where there is naam, there can not be a sense of an "I", any egotism. "Dukh" -pain "laathaa" -means is gone. Once the egotism went, all of my pains went. "Har sahj samaadh" means the Lord Hari’s "sahj samaadh". Celestial, harmonic, samadhi. "Samaadhi" means this exalted state that lasts forever. I’ve been blessed with this exalted state of "sehaj", of celestial peace. My pain is gone.
"Har naam vadaa-ee satgur tay paa-ee sukh satgur dayv man parsay."
"Vadaa-ee" means the greatness of. The greatness of the naam, I found, "paa-ee", from the True Guru. The true "sukh" happiness. "Satgur dayv man parsay". When my mind beholds ("parsay" means to behold) the true Guru. This doesn’t necessarily mean to behold the Guru physically, but to behold the shabad and the Word spiritually, in our hearts.
"Ha-o jeevaa ha-o jeevaa satgur daykh sarsay. ||2||"
I live I live, by beholding the True Guru.
"Ko-ee aan ko-ee aan milaavai mayraa satgur pooraa raam."
"Ko-ee aan"…Is there anyone who can come to me? (To do what?) "Milaavai" to meet. (With who?) With my True Guru, "mayra satgur". Poora- who is perfect in all respects.
"Ha-o man tan ha-o man tan dayvaa tis kaat sareeraa raam."
"Man" is mind, "tan" is body. "Dayvaa" means to give. I will give my whole mind and body."Tis kaat sareera raam." I would dedicate my mind and body, and I would even cut myself into pieces, spiritually, mentally…cutting out the attachment, cutting out the lust, the greed…. I would cut myself into bits, and lay them before him.
"Ha-o man tan kaat kaat tis day-ee jo satgur bachan sunaa-ay."
My mind and body, I would cut into peices and I will offer these, "tis day-ee" to this person, "jo satgur bachan sunaa-ay". "Satgur bachan" The words of the Guru. "Sunaa-ay" means to recite to me. The person who recites the words of the True Guru to me, I would offer anything to that person.
"Mayrai man bairaag bha-i-aa bairaagee mil gur darsan sukh paa-ay."
"Bairaag" means a detachment to the world, but it also means this divine longing, when you’re reaching out to the Lord, with tears in your eyes. I have become a "bairaagee". "Bhaiaa" means to become, "bairaagee" means someone who is in complete ecstacy of that love. "Mil gur" meeting with the Guru, "gur darsan" beholding the Guru is the only way that I will find peace.
"Har har kirpaa karahu sukh-daatay dayh satgur charan ham Dhooraa."
Oh Lord God, Oh nurturer of the world. "Kirpa Karahu." Have mercy upon me. Oh giver of peace "sukh-daatay", "dayh"-please give me, the dust ("dhooraa" means the dust) of the lotus feet "charan", of the True Guru. Please bless me with this.
"Ko-ee aan ko-ee aan milaavai mayraa satgur pooraa. ||3||"
If only someone would come! If only someone would come, if someone could please help me to meet with that True Guru!
"Gur jayvad gur jayvad daataa mai avar na ko-ee raam."
As great as the Guru, the giver, I have seen no other. "Avar" means other, na ko-ee means there is no other. There is no other greater giver than the Guru. The Guru gives us the gift of liberation. There is no gift greater than that on this earth.
"Har daano har daan dayvai har purakh niranjan so-ee raam."
He blesses me with the gift of "har", the name of the Lord. He blesses me with the "har purakh". "Purakh" means being, "har" means of this world. The nurturing being, who is beyond maya.. "Nirinjan". The Guru has blessed with me with that being who is beyond maya, and now I am beyond maya as well. The Guru is also one with that being.
"Har har naam jinee aaraaDhi-aa tin kaa dukh bharam bha-o bhaagaa."
"Jinee aaraadhi-aa" those who have meditatated upon the name of "har har". Their fears, their pains, their doubts, have run away. Are gone.
"Sayvak bhaa-ay milay vadbhaagee jin gur charnee man laagaa."
"Sayvak bhaa-ay" means through loving service. "Milay" they are united. "Vadbhaagee" who are very fortunate. "Man laagaa", those poeple’s whose minds are attached to the Guru’s lotus feet, they will meet with that true God.
"Kaho naanak har aap milaa-ay mil satgur purakh sukh ho-ee."
Oh Nanak, the Lord himself causes us to meet the Guru. "Mil aatgur purakh sukh ho-ee." Meeting in the Guru, that True being, only then can peace be obtained. Even meeting the Guru is not in our hands, that’s in the hands of our Lord.
"Gur jayvad gur jayvad daataa mai avar na ko-ee. ||4||1|| "
As great a giver as the Guru…I can not see anyone else who is as great a giver as the Guru. Because the Guru has given me the gift of immortal life, the gift of loving my Lord.
If there’s anything to take away from this hukam, it’s that Love. That love of the soul bride. The soul bride who is so imbued with love, that all she can utter is love. And may we feel that soul bride inside us. Thanking the Guru, thanking God for blessing us with the Guru, and thanking the Guru for blessing us, with God’s name.
"Mayrai man mayrai man satgur pareet lagaa-ee raam. Har har har har naam mayrai man vasaa-ee raam."
