Today’s Hukamnama is by Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Raag Sorath on Ang 598 in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj.  Raag Sorath carries this feeling of strong belief, conviction that totally absorbs you as you listen to it.  Guru Nanak Dev Ji gives the sabad to us and gives this sabad in "panchpaday".  "Panj" meaning five and "paday" literally means feet.  This means there are 5 parts/steps to this sabad.  

"Apnaa ghar moosat raakh na saakeh kee par ghar johan laagaa."

"Apnaa" means your own and "ghar" means home literally. "Moosat" means to be robbed/looted.  "Rakh" means to save and "na saakeh" means you do not have the wisdom.  Guru Ji saying in this first half of the line; you do not have the wisdom to save your own house, you do not have the energy to save your own home from being looted, from being plundered.  "Kee" means why, "par" means others, "ghar" means house of, "johan" means to look at, to spy on and "laagaa" means to be engaged in.  In the second half of this line Guru Ji says: you’re engaged in spying on the houses of others.   But Guru Ji is saying this on a much deeper level. "Apnaa ghar moosat raakh na saakeh".  What is our true home?  Our true home within us is our soul.  Our true home is what is inside us not the bricks we live in because in this lifetime, in the next lifetime these are not ours.  Guru Ji is saying your house, the treasure inside you is being looted everyday.  Who by? Robbers?  Not physical robbers.  But by kaam (desire), krodh (anger), lobh (greed), moh (attachment) and ahankaar (ego).  These are looting us all the time but what do we do?  We don’t focus on what’s happening to us.  We don’t focus on trying to save our own souls.  We look at other people.  We point out bad things about other people.  ‘Oh, look at this person he does this.  Oh look at that person she does that.  Look at this, look at that.’  We don’t look at ourselves.  Guru Ji is saying you’re being robbed; don’t worry about the other person.  We do nindia (slander) people.  But we don’t look at ourselves.  We don’t realise when we point one finger at another person, there are 4 fingers pointing back at us.

"Ghar dar raakhahi jay ras chaakhahi jo gurmukh sayvak laagaa. ||1||"

"Ghar" means house, "dar" means door, "raakhahi" means to save, "ras" means the sublime essence of God, "chaakhahi" means to taste/enjoy.  Guru Ji says the only way to save your soul, your house, the door to your house; the door to your soul the only way to save/protect this is to taste the sublime essence of God’s nectar within you.  To go inside and find God inside you.  But how do you do this?  "Jo gurmukh sayvak laagaa."Only that person can find it "jo (who), as a "gurmukh" ("gur" means Guru, "mukh" means face so the one who faces the Guru which spiritually means the one who follows the Guru through thick and thin by following everything the Guru says and by doing the Guru’s sewa), "sayvak laagaa" (the one who engages in the Guru’s sewa) that person tastes the sublime essence within themselves.  They see God within themselves.  He is then saved from the robbers of kaam (desire), krodh (anger), lobh (greed), moh (attachment), ahankaar (egotism). 

"Man ray samajh kavan mat laagaa."

"Man ray" means oh my mind, "samajh" means realise, wake up, gain some understanding, "kavan" mans what, "mat" means intellect/thinking and "laagaa" means to be engaged/focused in.  Oh my mind, wake up.  What is your intellect focused on?  What are you thinking about?  REALISE.  Sometimes we try and kid ourselves that we are thinking good things but really inside us we are thinking bad things.  Guru Ji says wake up, realise where your mind is going.  You’re not on the path you’re falling off. 

"Naam visaar an ras lobhaanay fir pachhutaahi abhaagaa. rahaa-o."

"Visaar" means to forget/cast away and "naam" means the name of the Lord.  We forget the name of the Lord.  "An" means other, "ras" means taste/essences, "lobhaanay" means to be completely engrossed in.  we forget the "naam", the true essence inside of us because its harder to find that, we have to go inside.  We end up getting involved with the essences outside.  We get involved in maya.  We get involved in loving what is external.  We don’t look inside us.  It’s very easy to pick up rocks as you walk over a mountain, because they are on the surface.  But to dig a mine in that mountain and look inside and find the diamond, which is within the mountain, is very difficult.  "Fir pachhutaahi abhaagaa" where "fir" means one day, "pachhutaahi" means you will regret this "abhaagaa" means oh you unfortunate soul.  Oh you unfortunate soul, you will regret forgetting the "naam".  "Rahaa-o."  Guru Ji says pause and think about this very carefully. 

"Aavat ka-o harakh jaat ka-o roveh ih dukh sukh naalay laagaa."

"Aavat" means when things come to you, "harakh" means you get pleased because you gained something physical.  "Jaat" means when things go away and "roveh" means to cry.  You cry when things go. "Ih dukh sukh naalay laagaa." "Ih" means this, "dukh sukh" means pain and pleasure, "naalay" means to the soul and "laagaa" means to be attached to the human.  This pain and pleasure is attached to the human beucase we think if we gain that physical thing we shall obtain peace.  But we wont.  Everything that comes has to go.  Pain is just a prelude to pleasure and pleasure is just a prelude to pain. 

" Aapay dukh sukh bhog bhogaavai gurmukh so anraagaa. ||2||"

"Aapay" means God himself in this context, "dukh sukh" means pain and pleasure, "bhog bhogaavai" means to partake in, to enjoy.  God himself causes the human being to enjoy and endure pleasure and pain.  "Gurmukh so anraagaa" but the one who has his face towards the Guru ("gurmukh"), he is "anraagaa". Split this word into two. "raag" means (in this context) to be affected/to  be moved out of that sehaj.  Therefore "anraagaa" means who cannot be.  The "gurmukh" is unaffected by this.  The "gurmukh" cannot be affected by pain/pleasure because the "gurmukh" knows pain comes, pleasure will come after and pleasure comes and pain will follow.  These are both transitory things. 

"Har ras oopar avar ki-aa kahee-ai jin pee-aa so tariptaagaa."

"Oopar" means greater than "har ras" where "har" means the Lord, the nourisher, the nurturer and "ras" means the essence.  What is greater than the essence of the Lord?  "Avar" means other things and "ki-aa kahee-ai" means what can we say about them?  How can we say anything is greater then that subtle essence because it’s not.  "Jin" means that person, "pee-aa" means who drinks this essence within themselves, that person becomes "tariptaagaa" (completely satisfied).  They have no desires left.  They have no greed, no attachment, no anger, no ego and no desire. 

"Maa-i-aa mohit jin ih ras kho-i-aa jaa saakat durmat laagaa. ||3||"

"Maa-i-aa mohit jin ih ras kho-i-aa" where "mohit" means allured/attached to maya, to this transitory physical world, "jin ih ras kho-i-aa".  "Jin" means this, "ras" means essence, "kho-i-aa" means to loose, to forsake.  The person who forsakes the true essence for the transitory essences of maya "jaa saakat durmat laagaa".  "Saakat" (faithless person, person who has no love inside them).  "Durmat" ("dur" means evilness and "mat" means thinking) and "laagaa" means to be attached to.  That person becomes attached to evil thoughts. 

"Man kaa jee-o pavanpat dayhee dayhee meh day-o samaagaa."

"Man kaa jee-o" means God is the one who gives life to your mind ("man) means mind and "jee-o" means life).  "Pavanpat means ("pavan" means the breath inside you and "pat" means the Lord of) God is the Lord of the breath, which you breathe, that keeps you alive. "Dayhee" means which keeps your body alive.  "Dayhee meh" means within the body, "day-o" means the divine being, that Lord, "samaagaa" means to be contained within.  That Lord, that divine being is contained within your body, God is saying. 

"Jay too deh ta har ras gaa-ee man tariptai har liv laagaa. ||4||"

"Jay" means if, "too deh" means if you bless us, "ta" means then "har ras gaa-ee" (we sing your praises, "gaa-ee" means to sing).  "Man tariptai" means my mind is satisfied, "tariptai" means to be satisfied.  "Liv laagaa" means to be attached to and "har" means the Lord.  Oh Lord, my mind is satisfied when it is attached to you, when I am with you. 

"SaaDhsangat meh har ras paa-ee-ai gur mili-ai jam bha-o bhaagaa."

Where can you find this sublime essence, this "har ras" Guru Ji says.  Guru Ji says in the  "saaDhsangat" (the company of the holy).  "Paa-ee-ai" means to find.  You can find this in the congregation of the holy.  "Gur mili-ai" means meeting the Guru ("mili-ai" means to meet and "gur" means Guru),  "jam bha-o" ("jam" means the angels of death, "bha-o" means the fear).  The fear of death/angel of death, which you have inside you, "bhaagaa" (departs, goes, falls away).  You don’t fear death because you become immortal.  You realise the soul has always been immortal. 

"Naanak raam naam jap gurmukh har paa-ay mastak bhaagaa. ||5||10||"

Oh Nanak, ever follow the Guru, become a "gurmukh".  "Raam naam" means the name of the Lord.  "Raam" means the one who permeates through all. "Jap gurmukh" means meditate on "raam" as a "gurmukh" (one who follows the Guru).  "Paa-ay" means to obtain and "har" means the Lord; obtain the Lord.  "Mastak" means your forehead and "bhaagaa" means your fortune.   Realise that every human being’s destiny is to fall back into the ocean of God because we are all drops separated from that.  Each one of our destinies is to fall back into that ocean.  May Guru Ji help us to wake up on this day as he has blessed us with this hukam.  May we realise where our lives are going.  May we too drink in his sublime essence of his "har ras". 

"Man ray samajh kavan mat laagaa.  Naam visaar an ras lobhaanay fir pachhutaahi abhaagaa. Rahaa-o."
