The hukamnamma is in the raag soohee. The Raag soohee is the raag in which the llavan is written. It’s a raag of intense love, of complete and utter prem, piar, love. There is no other way to describe this raag other than as love, as complete, pure, and innocent love for the beloved. The shabad is by Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

 

"Ta-o mai aa-i-aa sarnee aa-i-aa."
"Ta-o" to you. "Mai aa-i-aa." "Aa-i-aa" means to come. I have come to you my Lord. I have come seeking your sanctuary, your "sarnee", your protection, your haven. Guru Gobind Singh Ji says, "Sagal du-aar kao chhaad kai, gahe-o tuhaaro du-aar." I’ve seen all doors and I’ve left them behind, and now I’ve come to your door oh God, I’ve seen everything else as false. Guru Arjan Dev Ji is saying the same thing.

"Bharosai aa-i-aa kirpaa aa-i-aa."

"Bharosai" means firm faith, complete belief. Bharosa means a faith that has been experienced, a belief which you know to be true. I have come to put this faith into you, to experience the faith of the beloved. "Kirpa" means grace. I have come to receive your grace. Another interpretation is that through this belief I came to you, through your grace I came to you.

"Ji-o bhaavai ti-o raakho su-aamee maarag gureh pathaa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o."

"Ji-o" means however, in anyway. "Bhaavai" means to please. In anyway that it pleases you… "Raakho" means to save, to protect, to heal. "Su-aamee" means master. Oh Lord God, master of my soul, in anyway it pleases you, save me. That’s all I ask. "Maarag gureh pathaa-i-aa". Maarag means on the path. "Pathaa-i-aa" means to be placed on. Oh God, the Guru has put me on your path, now you save me in any way you can, in anyway that pleases you. "Rahaa-o." Pause and think about these lines.

"Mahaa dutar maa-i-aa. jaisay pavan jhulaa-i-aa. ||1||"

"Maa-i-aa" has been translated as anything that takes you away from God. Maya is not specific to money or a car or anything, maya is anything that becomes part of the wall of falsehood that encloses our minds. "Dutar" comes from "dusht" which means tyrannical, evil. Maya is not just difficult, "mahaa dutar" means it is the most treacherous, dangerous thing. ("Pavan" means air, or wind and "jhulaa-iaa" means a great storm of wind.) Guru ji says maya is like a sandstorm. In the middle of the sandstorm when you are standing there, you can’t see the sun, but the sun is there, the sun is shining, the sun is bright. But we are blinded by the sand. God shines through the sandstorm, but the windstorm is so violent, that we don’t see that Lord God who’s shining through all of us.

"Sun sun hee daraa-i-aa."

"Sun Sun" means by listening to people talk about how treacherous maya is, I have fear in my heart "daraa-i-aa".

"Karro Dharamraa-i-aa. ||2||"

"Dharamraa-i-aa" the judge of Dharm, the judge of righteousness. I’ve heard that he’s "karro", which means he’s strict, he’s stern. Whatever we do, whatever actions we perform, we have to live out the consequences. There’s no way around that.

"Garih anDh koopaa-i-aa."

"Garih" means the house of the world is "andh". "Andh" means blind, in darkness, in ignorance of love, in ignorance of God. "Koopaa-i-aa" means like a dark pit. the world is like a dark, black deep pit.

"Paavak sagraa-i-aa. ||3||"

"Paavak" means fire. "Sagraa-i-aa" means the whole of it. The whole world is on fire. The darkness, is of ignorance. The deepness of this pit is due to the harshness, the evil-mindedness that everyone carries around with them. And the fire the world is engrossed in is greed.

"Gahee ot saDhaa-i-aa."

"Gahee" means to grasp, "ot" means support "sadhaa-i-aa" means the holy saints. "Sadhaa-i-aa" means someone who’s done so much sadhana that they have conquered their mind, and opened their soul. I grasped the protection of these souls.

"Naanak har Dhi-aa-i-aa."

"Har" means the nourisher of the world. "Dhiaaiaa" means to worship, to meditate upon. Now Nanak has been blessed with the gift of meditating on the Lord Hari. With the grace of the saints…

"Ab mai pooraa paa-i-aa. ||4||3||46||"

Now "ab", "mai" I, "paa-i-aa" means to have found, "pooraa" means the perfect one. I have found the perfect God inside me. What did the saints do? They put out that fire of greed within me, they took me out of the pit of cruelness, and took me out of the darkness of ignorance, and showed me my soul, showed me who I truely am.

On this day that Guru Arjan dev Ji has blessed us with this beautiful hukam, let us truely go into the protection of God and ask Guru ji for his mercy, so that we may be blessed with the support of the holy saints, so that we can place our "bharosa" into God, into Waheguru Ji, into Guru ji.
