Today’s hukamnamma is in the bilaaval raag and is by Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The bilaaval raag is the raag of complete and utter happiness. Complete joy, celestial joy. The joy in bilaaval is the joy that arises within us when we attain something that we have been wanting for a long time, and finally we reach that goal. That is the happiness of bilaaval. That happiness of having reached that goal, of having attained the unattainable, of having become one. That is the happiness of bilaaval. That is the emotion, the current, that runs through bilaaval. Guru Arjan Dev Ji says:
"Darsan daykhat dokh nasay."
"Darsan" the blessed vision of God, "daykhat" having seen this, "dokh" means pain, and "nasay" means run away. All pains run away on seeing the blessed vision of God. Before we look at the rest of the hukamnaama, we must look at this word "darshan". It comes up a lot in the Guru Granth Sahib. What does this word darshan mean? Many people say seeing is believing, we hear that many times. But on a spiritual level, seeing is being. To see God you have to be one with God. Darsan is that stage when all you see is God. You have seen God within yourself, and realised that truely your atma, your soul, is a drop from the ocean of Waheguru, of God, and you see that Waheguru, that beloved God, through all. That is the true state of darsan, that is the true blessed vision. That is the state where all your pains run away. That state of realisation, because seeng is being in spiritual terms. We must remember this when talking about darsan. It is a very high level on the spiritual plane. Darshan. To achieve darshan in the aim of our lives. So keep that in mind. Seeing is being. To see God is to be one with God, to see Waheguru is to be one with Waheguru.
"Kabahu na hovhu darisat agochar jee-a kai sang basay. ||1|| rahaa-o."
Oh God, Oh Waheguru, Oh "Agochar", the one who cannot be fathomed with this human mind, can not be mapped out with the mind. Please please oh God…"kabahu" means ever, but the "na" after it makes it negative, so it says never. Never leave my vision, my "darisat". Oh God, please never leave me now, I want to see you in all forever and ever. "Jee-a" means soul, "sang" means to be one with, to be with all the time. "Basay" means to abide. Oh God please never leave me now, abide with my soul, abide in my soul. Pause and think about what darshan means.
"Pareetam paraan aDhaar su-aamee."
"Pareetam" means my beloved. My beloved is "paraan adhaar". "Paraan" means.."parana" means the ultimate breath of life, the ultimate life force. "Adhar" means support, "swami" means the Lord. My beloved "pareetam" is the sustaining life force of the whole world, of the universe, of many universes.
"Poor rahay parabh antarjaamee. ||1||"
"Antar" means inside, "jaamee" means the one who knows. The one who knows all internally, that Lord, that Parabh, that God…is "poor". "Poor" means completely perfect, permeating all places, pervading through all, that inner knower of hearts, that Lord, is everywhere and complete through all.
"Ki-aa gun tayray saar samHaaree."
"Ki-aa" means which, "gun" means virtue, "tayray" means yours, "saar" means to think about, "samhaaree" means to meditate upon. You have so many glorious virtues Waheguru. Which of your virtues should I remember you by? There are so many!
"Saas saas parabh tujheh chitaaree. ||2||"
"Saas saas" means with each breath. "Parabh" oh Lord, "tujheh chitaaree". "Chitaaree" means to remember, meditate upon. With each breath I meditate on you, oh God.
"Kirpaa niDh parabh deen da-i-aalaa."
The Guruji goes on to explain even more virtues of God, in this ultimate love, this ultimate happiness of bilaaval. "Nidh" means the complete epitome of, the complete ocean of. "Kirpa" means grace, mercy. God is the ocean of grace, the ocean of mercy, of the ocean of love. "Parabh", the Lord. "Deen" means those who are weak, those who are meek, those who are lowly. "Da-i-aalaa" means the one who is merciful. God is the ocean of mercy who is merciful upon those who are meek, those who are weak.
"Jee-a jant kee karahu partipaalaa. ||3||"
"Jee-a" means beings, "jant" means creatures. All beings, all creatures, all things that he created. "Karahu" means to do, "partipaalaa" means to look after, to cherish, to love, to nourish. God is the nourisher of all human beings, God is the nourisher of all creatures.
"Aath pahar tayraa naam jan jaapay."
"Aath pahar" means twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. "Tayraa naam", your name, you beautiful name, oh God. "Jan Jaapay" "jan" means your servant, "jaapay" means repeat. Your servant repeats your name twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, all the time.
"Naanak pareet laa-ee parabh aapay. ||4||23||109||"
"Parabh" means the lord, ‘aapay" means himself. the Lord himself has "laa-ee" implanted, awaked, "pareet" means spiritual love. God himself has inspired, has awakened, has lit this spark inside me of complete spiritual love.
On this day that we have been blessed with such a beautiful hukamnamma, may we truely contemplate what darshan means, and may we do ardaas, pray to that eternal Waheguru, who permeates through all, who lights the spark of divine love within our hearts, our souls, as well.
