Katha by Sukha Singh ji

Guru Arjan Dev ji Maharaj speaks today through the Dhanasari raag, a raag where all anxieties, fears and worries are taken away and the individual goes into sublime ecstasy of Waheguru ji’s love where there is no worry, where there is no anxiety. And Guru Arjan Dev ji says,

jah jah paykha-o tah hajoor door katahu na jaa-ee  jah jah means wherever. Wherever I paykha-o, wherever I look, tah hajoor, tah  You are hajoor. There You are ever present. Oh Waheguru! door katahu no jaa-ee, katahu no jaa-ee, never do You go door, never are You far away from me. Waheguru ji, You are in everyone, in everything; wherever I look I see You.

rav rahi-aa sarbatar mai man sadaa Dhi-aa-ee  Guru Arjan Dev ji says that Waheguru ji is rav rahi-aa, Waheguru ji is all pervading: rav rahi-aa, the One who pervades through all, sarbatar mai, through You, through everything, man sadaa Dhi-aa-ee, Oh my mind! Forever meditate upon Waheguru, forever remember Waheguru, forever do simran of Waheguru, who is pervading through all.

eet oot nahee beechhurhai so sangee ganee-ai  Guru Arjan Dev ji says only that person can be ganee-ai, only that person can be considered to be a sangee, to be a companion, to be a friend, who eet oot nahee beechhurhai, who never can be separated from you, nahee beechhurhai, who can never be removed from you, eet oot, in this world, eet, and oot, in the next. Guru Arjan Dev ji is saying only consider that person to be your companion, who is with you through everything, through life and through death. We must think: who can we consider our companion? Somebody who keeps our company. We make many friends in this world, some we stay in contact with a year, two years, three years, ten years. Ultimately, Guru ji is saying only that person, that entity, can be considered to be your companion, who stays with you throughout all. And who is that? Waheguru!

binas jaa-ay jo nimakh meh so alap sukh bhanee-ai  Guru ji says binas jaa-ay jo nimakh meh, the pleasure, the enjoyment, the happiness, which binas jaa-ay, which passes away in a nimakh, in an instant, so alap sukh bhanee-ai, we need to forget about those pleasures, pleasures of the world which last an instant and are not long lasting. What is the point in those pleasures? You buy a new car, by a year it is old and you want to buy another one. You buy a new computer game, you complete it and then you need another one. Guru ji says all that is alap such, is not everlasting peace. So, we should not focus on it.

rahaa-o  Guru ji says, Pause and think about this point.

paratipaalai api-aa-o day-ay kachh oon na ho-ee  Waheguru ji paratipaalai, looks after us, nourishes us, api-aa-o day-ay, gives us everything we need to live: this air we breathe, this food we eat kachh oon na ho-ee, Waheguru does not lack anything.

saas saas sammaaltaa mayraa parabh so-ee With each saas, with each breath, sammaaltaa, Waheguru ji is taking care of all creatures. mayraa parabh so-ee, my Waheguru takes care of everyone.

achhal achhayd apaar parabh oochaa jaa kaa roop  God is undeceiveable. You cannot deceive God.  achhayd, impenetrable, apaar,  Waheguru ji has no end, Waheguru ji is limitless, parabh oochaa jaa kaa roop, and Waheguru ji’s roop, Waheguru ji’s form,  is oochaa, is higher than high.

jap jap karahi anand jan achraj aanoop  Jap jap, by meditating, jan, the servant, by meditating, by doing jap on this acharj aanoop, on this beautiful, wondrous Waheguru, goes into anand, goes into divine ecstasy.

saa mat dayh da-i-aal parabh jit tumeh araaDhaa In these last two lines Guru ji says, saa mat, Oh Waheguru ji! O da-i-aal, Oh merciful Waheguru!  O Prabhu ji!  saa mat dayh, give me that mat, that understanding, that wisdom.  prabh, Oh Waheguru!  jit tumeh araaDhaa, by which, through which, tumeh araaDhaa, I may meditate upon You, I may aradh You, I may remember You forever.

naanak mangai daan parabh rayn pag saaDhaa Nanak begs, mangai, begs for this daan, begs for this gift, this boon, prabh. Oh Waheguru, what is it? rayn pag saaDhaa, the rayn, the dust of the pag, of the feet of the saaDhaa, of the saints, of the holy ones. Guru Arjan Dev ji is saying, Waheguru is with you, and will always be with you. Give up the momentary, sensory pleasures of this world, and look for the eternal peace.

eet oot nahee beechhurhai so sangee ganee-ai.

binas jaa-ay jo nimakh meh so alap sukh bhanee-ai. rahaa-o.

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

Katha by Ek Oang Kaar Kaur ji

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

Today’s hukamnama is a really beautiful description of Nadraa, of being able to see God in everything. Guru Arjun writes from his own experience and perspective about the incredible bliss that happens for the human being when we are blessed with the experience of actually being able to perceive the presence of God in everything around us and in our day to day lives.

The hukam begins: Everywhere that I look I see that the divine is present. Hazoor is the word that is talking about the presence of the divine, the way that the divine is present and dwelling in everything. So Guru Arjun is saying, Everywhere I look I am seeing that presence of divinity in all. The divine is not far away from us, he says. He describes this and talks about how roaming or residing all around, whether you travel or you stay still, in all things that divine is present.

Then he tells: Oh my mind, always meditate on this, always allow yourself to perceive this. He says, The one who never leaves you. He is having this experience in the first lines of seeing divine in everything and that God is not far. God is close. Everywhere he goes he sees that divine energy. He acknowledges that presence, and when we experience that presence of divinity it is with us here. It is with us when we leave our body. That is what we should consider to be our real companion. The subtext of this line is that the people we see in their personalities, nobody’s personality is going with us into the beyon,  but that presence of divinity that lives in all things. When we can connect with that, then that is our true companion. We should consider that energy, that consciousness of the divine our true companion.

He talks a little bit about the world in the next line. He says, There are these small things that give us peace and give us pleasure but they are completely destroyed in an instant. So for the mind to not get caught up with these things that give us a little peace here and a little pleasure there because those things are completely destroyed, just instantaneously. Then he says, Oh divine one! You nurture all of us and you give us everything we need and there is no lack.  It is a tremendously prosperous vision that he is having because he sees that the presence of the divine is in everything, and that presence within the physical world moves the energy so that we are nurtured, we are cared for. We are taken care of almost like children that we are children. There’s never a lack, it never runs out, the presence of divinity taking care of us never ever stops. He says in the next line, With every single solitary breath we are nurtured, we are taken care of by that great transcendent one. So he is having this vision of divine in everything, and then the recognition of the fact that with every breath that divine is moving things and doing things to take care of us completely so there is never a reason to feel a lack or feel afraid. Then he talks more about that transcendent one. He is praising that energy in everything that takes care of all of us and saying that this transcendent one is beyond all. There is no way to deceive or betray that one. It’s completely indivisible. There is no way to create discord. The energy cannot be in a state of discord with itself and it is absolutely without any boundaries. So he is describing the experience of perceiving that transcendent one. It is completely beyond boundaries. There is no way we can trick that energy and there is no way we can divide us amongst itself. Its form is oochaa, it’s high. Its form is the most transcendent form that there is.

Then he says, Always continually repeat this to ourselves and be in that vision. That brings bliss, that brings awe, that brings wonder. If we just let ourselves over and over again repeat, repeat, repeat this experience and this vision of the divine in everything in taking care of us completely, that brings us in a state of being able to live our soul’s reality and to be in such an awe and wonder of life.

The last lines are very humble and very beseeching. He is asking the transcendent one that, through Your kindness please bless me with this vision. So he has described a vision but he is also asking for the kindness of the divine to let him live in this place of wisdom so that he can always remember that this is what the divine really is and to never forget it, to never lose sight of this beautiful vision that he has. Then he ends it, that now he has seen that the divine is in everything and takes care of everything perfectly by its presence within the creation. Then what is there to ask for? So he begs only for one thing. In the last line Guru Arjun says that, The only thing I am begging from you, transcendent master, please bless me with the gift of the dust of the feet of the saints and the sadhus.

We were talking about the feet last week a little bit with the phrase Guru Ka Charan. Feet are a symbol for the subtle body. So when we are begging for the dust of the feet of the saints we are asking to come into contact in a very humble way with the subtle body of the people who can help us move across the pain of life and the ocean of life. So there is a very powerful technology to the feet and the dust and the subtle body and what that invokes in the highest realms.
