mai anDhulay kee tayk tayraa naam khundkaaraa.

kareemaa^N raheemaa^N alaah too ganee^N.

English Translation Details

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa! Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

Today’s hukamnamma is by Bhagat Namdev Ji. This shabad is in the tilaang raag, and has a feeling of praising the Almighty master, of praising this great Lord who is beyond the reach of our intellect.

"Mai anDhulay kee tayk tayraa naam khundkaaraa."

"Andhulay" means blind. I am blind. But I have support. Your name, the "name" is my support. "Kundkaaraa" means anchor. Your name anchors me in this world. You name supports me like an anchor, so I don’t drift away in the maya. I am blind, I have "no gian" no knowledge of spirituality, but your name is my anchor, suporting me. I am nothing, just as in Rehraas, "Mai nirgunay aray ko gun nahee, apeh taras peho-ee."

"Mai gareeb mai maskeen tayraa naam hai aDhaaraa. ||1|| Rahaa-o."

Oh God, "mai gareeb", I am poor. Spiritually I am poor. I do not have that divine love. "Mai Maskeen". I am meek. I haven’t got the strength to love you. "Tayra naam hai adhaaraa." "Adhaaraa" means complete support, that which sustains you. Your name is that which keeps me alive. "Rahaa-o." Pause and meditate.

"KareemaaN raheemaaN alaah too ganeeN."

"Kareema." Oh God, you are benevolent, ever giving. "Raheemaa." The one who is merciful, who ever gives. "Alaah," the one beyond all intellectual knowledge. "Too ganee", you are wealthy, the wealthiest of the weathly. You are the treasure of all treasures.

"Haajraa hajoor dar pays tooN maneeN. ||1||"

"Haajraa hajoor." Ever present. "Dar pays tooN maneeN." "Dar" means inside and outside. "Pays" means within me and around me. You are ever present, inside and outside, within me and around me. "Too manee." Oh God, you are this beautiful presence everywhere.

"Daree-aa-o too dihand too bisee-aar too Dhanee."

Oh God, you are the river of all life. "Daree-aa-o" means the river. You are the river of all life, all vitality. "Dihand," means the one who gives. "Bisee-aar" means the wealthiest of the wealthy. "Too dhanee" is again saying how wealthy God is. The wealth of God is love.

"Deh layhi ayk tooN digar ko nahee. ||2||"

"Deh" the one who gives. "Layhi" the one who takes away. "Ayk too." You are the only one. Oh God, you are the only one who gives and takes away. "Digar ko nahee." "Digar" means another. There is no other apart from you. That’s why Guru Nanak said "Ik Ong kar". There is no other apart from that one presence.

"TooN daanaaN tooN beenaaN mai beechaar ki-aa karee."

"Too daanaa" you are wise. "Too beenaa" you are the one who knows all, sees all. "Mai beechaar ki-aa karee". How can I even take you into my intellect? How can I make you the object of my thoughts? I can only make you the object of my love.

"Naamay chay su-aamee bakhsand tooN haree. ||3||1||2||"

"Naamay chay su-aamee" means the Lord Master of Naamdayv. "Chay" means of. "Naamay" is an affectionate name for Bhagat Naamdayv. Naamdayv is saying, you are my Lord. "Bakhsand too haree." And you are full of forgiveness. "Bakhsand" means the one who is ever forgiving, ever merciful. "Haree" means the one who gives life to everything. Oh haree, you not only give life to everything, but you forgive them. Guru Gobind Singh says in Akal Ustad, "Deen dyaal dyaa nidh dokhan dekhat hai par det na haarai". "Dokhan" means our sins.  God sees the sins we do.  God sees he bad things we do.  "Dekhat" means he sees. "Par det na haarai" but he never stops giving to us.  Despite seeing our sins, he still blesses us. Such is the path of the Guru.

Guru Granth Sahib Ji is speaking through Naamdayv and saying: That God who is ever merciful, take his divine name as your support. Because if you take that name, you will never faulter. The divine name is the supreme anchor of this world, that name keeps this earth moving. "Dhaul dharam daya ka poot. Santokh thapp rakhea jin soot." Righteousness, the truth, Satnam, is what keeps this universe supported, keeps this world supported.

May these beautiful lines of Bhagat Naam Dayv Ji remain in our hearts, may they stay on our lips all day. This blessing that Naam Dayv Ji has given, full of love:

"Mai anDhulay kee tayk tayraa naam khundkaaraa. Mai gareeb mai maskeen tayraa naam hai aDhaaraa. ||1||"
