Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji talks to us in the powerful inspiring Sorath raag and Guru Sahib ji says, “Man ray gahi-o na gur updays.” Man ray means Oh my mind, gahi-o means to follow, to accept, to love, gur updays means the teachings of the Guru. Oh my mind you have not accepted, you have no taken on the teachings of the Gurus’. You do not carry them out.

Kahaa bha-i-o ja-o mood mudaa-i-o bhagva-o keeno bhays. Mood mudaa-i-o means to shave one’s head, bhagva means pinky, saffron colour. Guru Sahibji says, “What was the use of shaving your head and wearing pinky, saffron colour. What’s the deal with wearing these spiritual robes? What’s the deal with looking religious on the outside but not being religious on the inside? Looking spiritual on the outside but having no connection inside?” Guruji says, “There is no point if you haven’t accepted what the Guru says. You must accept what the Guru says and love what the Guru says!”

Rahaa-o. Guruji says, “Pause and think about this.”

Saach chhaad kai jhoothah laagi-o janam akaarath kho-i-o. Chhaad means to give up, laagi-o means to attach, janam means life, akaarath means useless. “Oh human being you have given up on the truth and you have attached yourself to falsehood. Your life goes away useless.”

Kar parpanch udar nij pokhi-o pas kee ni-aa-ee so-i-o. Parpanch means deception, udar means stomach, nij pokhi-o means to fill, pas kee ni-aa-ee means like an animal, so-i-o means to sleep. “You deceive people just to fill your stomach.” Guruji says. “Then like an animal you sleep.” Why is Guruji saying, “You sleep like an animal?” Because you are unaware of everything, like an animal who is unaware that you are meant to reach God. Bhae prapat manukh dehuriya Gobind Milan ki eh teri bariya. Guru Arjun Devji says, “This is the time to meet Waheguru but instead you are sleep in maya, in falsehood.” Raam bhajan ki gat nahi janee maya haath bhikhana. You haven’t found the path of meditation upon Raam, you do not know. You have sold yourself to the hands of this maya, this illusion.

Urajh rahi-o bikhi-an sang ba-uraa naam ratan bisraanaa. Ba-uraa means a mad man, urajh rahi-o means to be entangled, bikhi-an sang means the company of falsehood, company of poison, ratan means the jewel of God’s name, bisraanaa means to forget. “Oh mad man you are entangled in the company of falsehood, of poison. You have forgotten the jewel of God’s name.”

Rahi-o achayt na chayti-o gobind birthaa a-oDh siraanee. Achayt means to be unconscious, chayti-o means to think about, gobind (in this context) means the Lord of universe. “You are unconscious of Waheguru and you never think of Gobind, Lord of this universe. Your whole life passes away uselessly.”

In the last line Guru Tegh Bahadur ji says, “Kaho naanak har birad pachhaana-o bhoolay sadaa paraanee.” Nanak says, “Oh Waheguru it’s my nature to make into mistakes and fall into falsehood and it’s Your nature to save me. Oh Waheguru please live up to your nature, to your name because this mortal is always making mistakes.”

Guru Sahibji is saying, “Wake up! Follow what the Guru says inwardly and outwardly and then you will cross across this world ocean of the world.”

Man ray gahi-o na gur updays. Kahaa bha-i-o ja-o mood mudaa-i-o bhagva-o keeno bhays. Rahaa-o.
