hsqI isir ijau AMksu hY Ahrix ijau isru dyie ]
hasathee sir jio a(n)kas hai aharan jio sir dhaee ||
The elephant offers its head to the reins, and the anvil offers itself to the hammer;

mnu qnu AwgY rwiK kY aUBI syv kryie ]
man than aagai raakh kai oobhee saev karaee ||
just so, we offer our minds and bodies to our Guru; we stand before Him, and serve Him.

ieau gurmuiK Awpu invwrIAY sBu rwju isRsit kw lyie ]
eio guramukh aap nivaareeai sabh raaj srisatt kaa laee ||
This is how the Gurmukhs eliminate their self-conceit, and come to rule the whole world.

naanak guramukh bujheeai jaa aapae nadhar karaee ||1||
O Nanak, the Gurmukh understands, when the Lord casts His Glance of Grace. ||1||

jin guramukh naam dhhiaaeiaa aaeae thae paravaan ||
Blessed and approved is the coming into the world, of those Gurmukhs who meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

naanak kul oudhhaarehi aapanaa dharageh paavehi maan ||2||
O Nanak, they save their families, and they are honored in the Court of the Lord. ||2||

The Guru unites His Sikhs, the Gurmukhs, with the Lord.

eik saevak gur paas eik gur kaarai laaeeaa ||
The Guru keeps some of them with Himself, and engages others in His Service.

jinaa gur piaaraa man chith thinaa bhaao guroo dhaevaaeeaa ||
Those who cherish their Beloved in their conscious minds, the Guru blesses them with His Love.

gur sikhaa eiko piaar gur mithaa puthaa bhaaeeaa ||
The Guru loves all of His Gursikhs equally well, like friends, children and siblings.

guru siqguru bolhu siB guru AwiK gurU jIvweIAw ]14]
gur sathigur bolahu sabh gur aakh guroo jeevaaeeaa ||14||
So chant the Name of the Guru, the True Guru, everyone! Chanting the Name of the Guru, Guru, you shall be rejuvenated. ||14||

Today’s Hukamnama is by Guru Amar Das Ji, the third Guru, in Raag Sorath on Ang 647 on Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj.  Raag Sorath is a Raag which is said to totally overpower the listener.  The person who listens to Sorath Raag is totally imbued into the Raag.  Through this powerful Raag, Guru Amar Das Ji speaks to us.  Guru Amar Das Ji, who in the house of Guru Nanak is considered to be the image of Sewa, who’s Sewa is immense, who for 12 years carried water to and from the river for the ishnaan sewa, bathing service, of Guru Angad Dev Ji.  Guru Amar Das Ji is talking to us in this Hukamnama in how to do Sewa. 

“Salok mehlaa 3.  Hastee sir ji-o ankas hai ahran ji-o sir day-ay.”

“Hastee” means elephant, “sir” means head, “ji-o” means as, “ankas” is talking about the reins which are in the elephant’s head.  In India the people that ride elephants, they put this nail type thing in the elephant’s head and they use that to control where the elephant’s going.  Guru Ji is saying if you want to do Sewa, this is the way to do it.  As the elephant totally gives in to the “ankas”, the reins, to the way the person driving the elephant, the direction in which they are pushing the elephant in, the elephant totally gives into that.  Guru Ji gives us another example to help us understand.  Guru Ji says “ahran ji-o sir day-ay”.  “Ahran” means anvil, “day-ay” means to give.  As the anvil offers itself up to the hammer, as the anvil knows only if the hammer beats against it, can anything positive come.  Guru Ji is saying just as these two examples where the anvil surrernders itself to the beating of the hammer and the elephant directs itself to the direction of the reins, so

“Man tan aagai raakh kai oobhee sayv karay-i.”

Guru Ji is saying “man tan aagai” put your mind and body.  “Aagai” means in front of and “raakh kai” means to place.  Place your mind and body in front of the Guru.  If you wish to be changed for the better, if you wish to reach that ultimate goal, then the impurities will have to be beaten out just as they are out of the anvil, just as the elephant has to be directed.  So our mind has to be put in front of the Guru.  “Oobhee sayv karay-i” which means stand before the Guru and serve him.  Become steadfast to serve the Guru, to serve the world to serve humanity. 

“I-o gurmukh aap nivaaree-ai sabh raaj sarisat kaa lay-ay.”

“I-o gurmukh aap nivaaree-ai” means just as the elephant was once wild and used to go on its own path and is now only on the path in which it is directed, by doing Sewa in such a way where you surrender everything to the Guru, “i-o” means in this way, “gurmukh” means the gurmukhs, te ones who follow the Guru, “aap nivaaree-ai”means their sense of ego, their sense of self conceit, their sense of pride, “nivaaree-ai” means to eliminate, to remove.  Through serving the Guru and following the Guru steadfastly, and through doing Sewa, that is the way to eliminate ego.  Once you have eliminated your ego what happens?  “Sabh raaj sarisat kaa lay-ay.”  “Sabh” means all, “raaj” means kingdom, “sarisat” means of the world, of the universe, “kaa lay-ay” means to receive.  Those people who win their mind and eliminate their ego, they win the kingdom of the world.  Guru Nanak Dev Ji says in Jap Ji Sahib: “Man Jeeteh Jag Jeet”.  If you win your mind, you have won the world.  You can win the kingdom of this world if you remove that ego from inside of yourself. 

“Naanak gurmukh bujhee-ai jaa aapay nadar karay-i. ||1||

Oh Nanak “gurmukh bujhee-ai” where “bujhee-ai” means to understand.  The follower of the Guru only understands this message when (“jaa”), “nadar” means grace and “karay-i” means to shower upon and “aapay” means God himself.  When God himself casts his grace upon the gurmukh, only then can we understand. 

“Mehlaa 3.  Jin gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-i-aa aa-ay tay parvaan.”

Guru Ji says along with the Sewa, talks about Simran.  “Jin gurmukh” means those followers of the Guru, who have their face steadfastly towards the Guru, “Dhi-aa-i-aa” means to meditate upon, the ones who have meditate upon the name “naam” the Name of God.  “Aa-ay” means their coming onto this earth, “tay parvaan” means is approved, is satisfied, is blessed.  The coming onto the earth, of those gurmukhs who have meditated upon the “naam” their lives have been fulfilled and they have truly achieved the meaning of life. 

“Naanak kul uDhaareh aapnaa dargeh paavahi maan. ||2||”

Oh Nanak, “kul” means family, “uDhaareh” means to liberate, to save, and those gurmukhs have this effect on the people around them, save their family.  “Aapnaa” means their own.  They save their family, all of those around them.  They have a positive effect on the atmosphere around them.  “Dargeh paavahi maan” where “dargeh” means in the court off Lord tey are honoured “paavahi maan”. 

“Pa-orhee.  Gurmukh sakhee-aa sikh guroo maylaa-ee-aa.”

“Gurmukh sakhee-aa” means those gurmukhs, those friends, those followers of the Guru, the Guru unites them all with the Lord.  “Maylaa-ee-aa” means to unite.  The Guru is the one who unites his Sikhs, his followers, his beloved ones, with the Lord. 

“Ik sayvak gur paas ik gur kaarai laa-ee-aa.”

A few Sikhs of the “sayvak” (follower).  A few of his beloved ones, the Guru keeps them close “gur paas”.  A few people the Guru has blessed doing Sewa close to him.  They do Sewa in Guru Ji’s darbar.  They do Sewa in the court of the Guru, in the Gurdwaras, close to the Guru.  Others “gur  kaarai” were “kaarai” means on some important task and “laa-ee-aa”  means to put them.  Others have been put on some important service.  They are both equal.  Some are serving the Guru close and some near.  Near and close they are both serving him. 

“Jinaa gur pi-aaraa man chit tinaa bhaa-o guroo dayvaa-ee-aa.”

Guru Amar Das Ji saying the Guru is close to everyone.  “Jinaa” means those people, who h ave the “gur pi-aaraa”, the beloved Guru, in their “man chit”, conscious mind.  Not in the ack of their mind but in their mind now.  Those people who have the Guru in their mind constantly, “tinaa bhaa-o guroo dayvaa-ee-aa.”  “Tinaa” means to those people, “bhaa-o” means love, “guroo dayvaa-ee-aa” means the Guru blesses them with his eternal love. 

“Gur sikhaa iko pi-aar gur mitaa putaa bhaa-ee-aa.”

The Guru has “iko pi-aar” has one love if literally translated.  The Guru has one love for his gursikhs andhe loves them equally.  He loves them better then his friends, sons, brothers and siblings.  The Guru loves his gursikhs more than anything.  When Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s sons died, he looked at the Khalsa who were sitting down and he said ‘char moheh tau kya hua eh jiwat kehi hazzaar’.  If four of my sons have died, so what?  Thousands and thousands sit before me.  That is how much love the Guru has for his Sikhs.  After talking about this one love Guru Ji says in the last line

“Gur satgur bolhu sabh gur aakh guroo jeevaa-ee-aa. ||14||”

Guru Ji says chant the name of that Guru, the “satgur” the true Guru, “sabh” means all of you and “bolhu” means chant.  All chant the name of the true Guru.  What will happen by chanting this name?  “Gur aakh guroo jeevaa-ee-aa” where “aakh” means by chanting, “jeevaa-ee-aa” means the Guru will bring you to life.  We may think we are alive now but true life starts when we fall in love with the Guru.  Only then do we learn how to live life truly.  Until we meet the Guru we are dead.  The Guru is the one who brings us to life.  The Guru is the one who beats out the desires, the ego, and the greed and gives us eternal, immortal life. 

May Guru Amar Das Ji bless us.  May we understand the path of Sewa and Simran.  May the ego be beaten out of us just as it is beaten out of the anvil by the hammer and just as it’s beaten out of the elephant. 

“Hastee sir ji-o ankas hai ahran ji-o sir day-ay.  Man tan aagai raakh kai oobhee sayv karay-i.”

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa! Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! 

The hukam today is from Guru Amardas Ji and it describes a state of mind.  The state of mind that Guruji describes is the state of surrender.  It uses the analogy of an animal offering itself to the blow of the hammer, of the elephant offering itself to the reins of the elephant driver.  He says, just in this way we surrender ourselves and make ourselves an offering to our Guru.  We stand before him and report for service.  When we have this mental attitude of surrender in our minds and in our hearts that in this way we can gain power because all power comes through seva. 

Then Guruji goes on to describe what happens to us when we have this state of surrender and he says that when you meditate on Naam, when you surrender to the Guru not only do you get all power but your family is honoured and you become united with the whole Sadhsangat and with the God himself.  He further says that Guru holds some people to his prism and hugs and others he engages in his service.  When that happens we become filled with love.  Love in our hearts, love in our minds. 

Then he ends by saying finally that all of those Sikhs who belong to the Guru are loved equally well.  Just as we love our children, our brothers, our sisters, our family.  In that way Guruji holds to his prism and loves us.  Then he says Chant Gods name and through the Guru we blossom and move in flower of that state of conciousness of Naam.
