Today’s hukamnamma is by Guru Ram Das Ji and is again in jaitsaree raag. We talked about jaitsaree raag yesterday and the intensity, gravity of jaitsaree raag. The intensity of jaitsaree raag is such that when listening to it you become completely merged with the power and weight of this raag. I recommend you find a shabad sung in jaitsaree raag and listen to the music of the raag. Experience for yourself its power.
Jin har hirdai naam na basi-o tin maat keejai har baaNjhaa
Jin har hirdai naam na basi-o. Those people, jin har hirdai, hirdai means inside your heart, the very centre of your soul. Those people who do not have the Lord’s Naam inside their heart, the centre of their soul. Tin maat keejai har baaNjhaa. Their mothers should have remained sterile. Baanjhaa. For many people this may be shocking, that Guru Sahib ji would actually say this. But Guruji is saying that the whole idea of being on this earth is for us to merge back in with the Creator’s soul. If we don’t do this our lives are wasted and the lives of those around us, those affected by our energy, their lives are wasted also.
Tin sunjee dayh fireh bin naavai o-ay khap khap mu-ay karaaNjhaa
Sunjee means a wasted, abandoned, deserted place. Without the Naam, without the love of God inside us, we have this empty space within us that can’t be filled. We try to fill it with cars, we try to fill it with money, we try to fill it with all the material goods possible, but this still doesn’t work. Tin sunjee dayh fireh bin naavai o-ay. We walk around. Khap khap. Khap Khap means to talk, cry out needlessly. Mu-ay karaaNjhaa. So we cry out, talk needlessly. Bin naavai, without the Naam, we walk around in lust, greed, ego. Guru ji says if we just took the Naam, were blessed with the Naam, all these things would go.
Mayray man jap raam naam har maajhaa
The word maajhaa here means within your very centre, within your heart. Mayray man, oh my mind, jap, meditate, become one with. Raam naam. The name of the Creator.
Har har kirpaal kirpaa parabh Dhaaree gur gi-aan dee-o man samjhaa
Har har kirpaal. Kirpaal means the merciful, the one who is full of kindness. Don’t just assume from the first few lines of this shabad that the Lord isn’t full of kindness. Those first few lines are to wake us up. Guru ji is saying, Look! Wake-up! Kirpaa parabh Dhaaree. He has showered me with his mercy. Gur gi-aan dee-o man samjhaa. Gian means spiritual knowledge. The Guru has blessed me with spiritual knowledge. Man samjhaa. My mind has understood.
rahaa-o
Pause and think about this.
Har keerat kaljug pad ootam har paa-ee-ai satgur maajhaa
In this age of Kal Jug, this Dark Age, har keerat kaljug pad ootam. Pad means level or status. Ootam means high. Har keerat kaljug pad ootam. The spiritual experience gained through prayer, meditation, kirtan, is the highest thing in this age. Har paa-ee-ai satgur maajhaa. You will find God through the very centre of the Guru. Maajhaa means centre again. So through an experience of kirtan, meditation, prayer, you will experience the very centre of the Guru and meet with God.
Ha-o balihaaree satgur apunay jin gupat naam pargaajhaa
Ha-o balihaaree. I am a sacrifice. Satgur. To my true Guru. Apunay jin gupat. Gupat means this hidden name. Because the Name, the Naam is within us all. Yet it is up to the Guru to reveal the Naam to us. Guru ji says I am a sacrifice to my True Guru, who has revealed the hidden Naam inside me. (Gurbani quote.) Guruji says, I opened up the treasure of my ancestors, which lay inside me, which is the Naam, and then I was filled with spiritual ecstasy.
Darsan saaDh mili-o vadbhaagee sabh kilbikh ga-ay gavaajhaa
The darsan, the blessed vision. SaaDh mili-o. The blessed vision of the holy people is given. Vadbhaagee. It is given to those who have great good fortune. Sabh kilbikh. All their pains, all their sins. Ga-ay gavaajhaa. Have been removed, taken away.
Satgur saahu paa-i-aa vad daanaa har kee-ay baho gun saajhaa
Satgur. The true guru. Saahu. The true King. paa-i-aa vad daanaa. Vad daanaa means the one who knows all. Har kee-ay baho gun saajhaa. In the Guru’s great virtue, he has explained to me the glories of the Lord, the path of truth. This is what he’s doing now, through this hukamnamma.
Jin ka-o kirpaa karee jagjeevan har ur Dhaari-o man maajhaa
Jin ka-o kirpaa, those upon whom the grace of the Guru is given. Karee jagjeevan. The Lord, Waheguru, the one who brings life to the world. Ur dhaario means to take within oneself. Man maajhaa means right into the centre of one’s mind. Those people who have been showered by the Guru’s grace, only they are the ones who can behold him in their hearts.
Dharam raa-ay dar kaagad faaray jan naanak laykhaa samjhaa
Dharam raa-ay. The righteous judge, in the court of the Lord. Dar. At the court of the Lord. Kaagad faaray. Kaagad literally means papers. Faray means to rip up. Jan naanak laykhaa samjhaa. The Righteous judge of Dharma, at the court of the Lord, he literally tears up the karmic papers of those who have been imbued with God’s love. Nanak’s account has been settled by the Guru himself.
The only way to wipe away karma and to do such karma, such action which brings us out of karma, is to meditate upon the Lord Har and follow the Guru’s path. (Gurbani quote.) But this can only happen with the Guru’s kirpa. The Guru has tried to wake us up in this hukamnamma. And we must with his grace, with his blessings, may we follow this hukamnamma.
Mayray man jap raam naam har maajhaa. Har har kirpaal kirpaa parabh Dhaaree gur gi-aan dee-o man samjhaa. Rahaa-o
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa! Waheguru ji ki Fateh!
