Today’s Hukamnama is by Guru Ram Das Ji in the Raag Bilaaval on Ang 800 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj. Raag Bilaaval expresses joy and happiness but not a joy that fades away, but an eternal joy. The joy of finding one who is eternal. Only that joy can give you eternal joy because you’ve joyed to the eternal. You have tasted immortality. This is the feelings of Bilaaval Ragg. A feeling of happiness, joy and thankfulness to God. Guru Ram Das Ji is blessing us, the Guru of miracles with the following Hukamnama:
“Bilaaval mehlaa 4.”
“Anad mool Dhi-aa-i-o purkhotam an-din anad ananday.”
“Mool” means the root, the source. The source of all bliss, the root of all happiness, and the beginning of all peace spreads into the universe. “Anad” means complete bliss. “Dhi-aa-i-o” means I have meditated upon all happiness says Guru Ji. Guru Ram Das Ji says that root of all happiness is “purkhotam”. “Purkh” means being and “otam” meaning the highest. “Purkhotam” means highest being which is God. Guru Ji is saying God is the highest bliss. “Ananday” means spiritual bliss, spiritual ecstasy. Their mind is at complete peace, eternally.
“Dharam raa-ay kee kaan chukaa-ee sabh chookay jam kay chhanday. ||1||”
“Dharam raa-ay” the judge of righteousness, the judge of “Dharam” who we see at the end of our life who judges the good and bad things we have done. Guru Ji says “dharma raa-ay kee kaan” where “kaan” means fear inside my heart. “Chukaa-ee” means has been lifted. The fear inside my heart of being judged has been lifted, has been taken away because I know the one who judges all. I have become one with the supreme creator. Who’s going to judge me now? “Sabh” means all and “chookay” means to be removed. “Chhanday” means to be under. “Jam kay” mean the messengers of death. I’m never going to be under the messengers’ of death, they never have any power over me because I have become immortal, I have joined to the One who has no end and no beginning. What can the messengers of death do to me? They can kill my body but cannot kill my soul as it has become one with God.
“Jap man har har naam gobinday.”
Guru Ji says “Jap man” which means; oh my mind, meditate upon. “..bind” means route, “go” means the universe. “Gobinday” means the route of the universe. The one who created and looks after this universe: Meditate his Name. that’s the way of becoming an Eternal, that’s the way of conquering death.
“Vadbhaagee gur satgur paa-i-aa gun gaa-ay parmaananday. ||1|| rahaa-o.”
"Vadbhaagee” means by great good fortune, “paa-i-aa” means to find and “satgur” means the true Guru. By great good fortune, you have found the true Guru. What happenes when you found the truue Guru? What does the true Guru tell you to do? “Gun gaa-ay” where “gun” means praises and “gaa-ay” means to sing, “parmaananday” means highest bliss (“parmaa means the highest and “ananday” means bliss..the meeting of two words). You sing the praises of the highest bliss which is God. “Rahaa-o” which means Guru Ji is saying pause and think about this.
“Saakat moorh maa-i-aa kay baDhik vich maa-i-aa fireh firanday.”
“Saakat” means people have no faith, no belief, no love and “moorh” means foolish. Those people who have no faith, Maharaj says they are foolish. Why? Because “maa-i-aa kay baDhik” where “baDhik” means prisoner and “maa-i-aa kay” means to Maya (anything that takes you away from God is Maya according to the Sikh understanding). Maya is the illusions which separates you from God. Your soul is alredy one with God, it is already a part of God. In JapJi Sahib, Guru Nanak Dev Ji says “kiv koorrai thuttai paal” which is how can the illusion of falsehood be broken down? What is the illusion of falsehood? Maya. Those people who have no faith are foolish. They cannot see they are being held prisoner by Maya, by everything around them. “Vich” means inside. “Maa-i-aa” means Maya, the illusion. “Fireh firanday” means wondering around continuously. It is like someone in a dream. They can get out of that dream by waking up but they think there is no way out.
“Tarisnaa jalat kirat kay baaDhay ji-o taylee balad bhavanday. ||2||”
“Tarisnaa” means desire, “jalat” means it burns those people, “kirat” means what they have done and “baaDhay” means to be bound down by. Those people are bound down by what they have done in their past life and they are being burnt down in this life by desire. Guru Ji compares them to an Ox. “Ji-o” means as, “taylee” means where they grind down seeds to make oil. “Bhavanday” means to go round and round and “balad” means an ox. They are like an ox that goes round and round the mill. He has no other purpose and just goes around and round for the sake of going round.
“Gurmukh sayv lagay say uDhray vadbhaagee sayv karanday.”
“Gurmukh” means people who face towards the Guru, not just physically but internally, spiritually. “Sayv” means the true service and “lagay” means to go into, to go under. They join the true service. Who do they serve? The true Guru. “UDhray” means to be liberated and “say” means those people. Those that follow the Guru with mind, body, spirit and soul; those people are liberated. “Karanday” means to perform. They perform the service of the Guru and everyone around them. Those people have such great good fortunes that are blessed in serving the Guru and serving humanity.
“Jin har japi-aa tin fal paa-i-aa sabh tootay maa-i-aa fanday. ||3||”
“Jin” means those, “har” means God and “japi-aa” means meditated. Guru Ram Das Ji says those who have meditated upon God “fal (fruit) paa-i-aa (have found)” have found the fruits. They have gained the fruits of their efforts. Don’t think if you meditate upon God, God wont remember you. God’s arms are always open. What happens when you receive the reward for meditating? “Sabh” means all and “tootay” means to break. “Fanday” means the noose around the neck. “Maa-i-aa” means the illusion that has been cast upon us that we are separate from God. That illusion is broken through meditation. What do we realise?
“Aapay thaakur aapay sayvak sabh aapay aap govinday.”
“Aapay (means he himself) thaakur (means the Lord Master)”. “Aapay sayvak” means he is the servant as well. We will relaise this when we look at everyone with one eye. With the eye of loving equality. “Aapay aap” means he, himself. “Govinday” is the Lord of the Universe. It is him all around me. My beloved is everywhere.
“Jan naanak aapay aap sabh vartai ji-o raakhai tivai rahanday. ||4||6||”
“Jan” means servant. Servant Nanak says “vartai” means work through everything. He himself works though everyone. He, himself talks through everyone. He, himself plays through everyone. “Ji-o raakhai” means as he keeps/protects us. “Tivai rahanday” means can we stay, can we remain by his love and law.
May Guru Ram Das Ji bless us that we connect to God, through mediation. May we break away the illusion, which holds us down everyday. May he break us away from the illusion and bring us to the light and love.
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
