Guru Amardas ji Maharaj, the embodiment of humility and sewa, is talking to us today and telling us to be humble in this Raag, to do sewa, to lose ego, and he is telling us this in the Raag Vadhans. Raag Vadhans, the word Vadhans itself meaning the Great Swan and in India, the Swan has always been the symbol of purity, of innocence, of detachment and that is the sense of this raag. Guru Amardas ji says,

ha-umai naavai naal viroDh hai du-ay na vaseh ik thaa-ay, ha-umai ego, naavai means the Name of God, naal means with, viroDh means enmity, conflict, hai means to exist, there is a conflict between ego and the Name of God. Between the sense the only “I” exists and the only “God” exists, there is a conflict. Because if I see myself as distinct from God, if I see myself as distinct from the Creator, then I am not merged in with Him. If “I” exist, then only God cannot exist. If only God exists, then “I” cannot exist. du-ay means both, na means cannot, vaseh means to remain, ik means one, thaa-ay means place. The two cannot be in the same place. You cannot have ego and God – the ego must die for the soul to be the abode of God. You cannot have the idea that only “I’ exist, and then only “You” exist; of the two only one can exist. So, the onus is on us to kill the ego, to give up the ego and take home the notion that only God exists.

ha-umai vich sayvaa na hova-ee taa man birthaa jaa-ay, ha-umai, ego, vich means in, sayvaa na hova-ee, sewa means selfless service, na means cannot, hova-ee means perform, in ego sewa cannot be performed. You cannot do sewa in ego, there is no way of doing sewa in ego and sewa done in ego is fruitless, Guru ji says. That is sewa which is done without ego, which is done to kill the ego. Because, if you are trying to serve all around you, you got to be seeing God in all and feeling the connection of the eternal soul. taa means so, man means, in this case, this soul or this body, birthaa means unfulfilled, unsatisfied, jaa-ay means to go. Those people who do sewa in egotism, those people cannot do sewa, because they are in ego. This life of theirs goes unsatisfied, unfulfilled.

har chayt man mayray too gur kaa sabad kamaa-ay, har chayt man mayray , O mere man, O my mind, O man mere, har chayt, har means Waheguru, chayt means to remember, to meditate upon – meditate upon Waheguru, too, you, gur kaa sabad means Guru’s mantra, the Guru’s word, kamaa-ay means to mediate upon. Meditate upon the Guru’s mantra. This will kill your ego.

hukam maneh taa har milai taa vichahu ha-umai jaa-ay, hukam maneh, maneh means to accept, to submit to, to follow, hukam means the Guru’s command, submit to the Guru’s command, submit to the Guru’s word. Taa har milai, taa means then, har means Waheguru, milai to be united with, then you will be united with Waheguru, then you will meet God within you. Then God will make your soul His permanent abode. taa, then what happens, vichahu, within you, ha-umai means ego, jaa-ay means to be removed. When God makes your soul His permanent abode, then egotism will be kicked out itself.

rahaa-o, Guru ji says Pause and think about this.

ha-umai sabh sareer hai ha-umai opat ho-ay, ha-umai sabh sareer, ha-umai means egotism, sabh means all, in all, sareer means bodies, egotism is within all bodies, is within everyone; ha-umai opat ho-ay, opat ho-ay means to be created, to be born, through ha-umai we are born, we come onto this earth again and again and again and again, because of egotism, because of ego of our past life times, because we have not broken through into God. If we had broken through our ego and merged in with the Almighty, we would not have come back onto this earth, all of us have come back through ego. haun vich aaya, haun gayaea, Asa di var has a very beautiful section, where Guru ji talks about this, talks about ha-umai.

ha-umai vadaa gubaar hai ha-umai vich bujh na sakai ko-ay, then in the next line, Guru Amardas ji says, ha-umai vadaa gubaar hai, ha-umai, egotism is a vadaa, complete, gubaar means darkness, hai means to be, egotism is the complete total utter darkness of ignorance, of no light. There is no light in there, it is complete darkness. ha-umai vich, vich means in, ha-umai means egotism, and egotism bujh na sakai ko-ay, bujh means to understand, na sakai means no one can, ko-ay means anyone. In egotism, you cannot understand anything. You cannot understand the Guru’s shabad, because ego is always telling you, no, no, only “I” exist, only “I” exist, only “I” exist, only look after me.

ha-umai vich bhagat na hova-ee hukam na bujhi-aa jaa-ay, ha-umai vich, in ha-umai, in egotism bhagat na hova-ee, bhagat means devotional worship of God, na haova-ee, means cannot be done; you cannot worship God in egotism. Many of us try, but it cannot be done, that is not true worship of God; hukam na bujhi-aa jaa-ay, hukam means God’s command, na bujhi-aa jaa-ay, means cannot be understood, you cannot God’s commands to us through egotism.

ha-umai vich jee-o banDh hai naam na vasai man aa-ay, ha-umai vich jee-o banDh hai, hau-mai vich, in egotism, jee-o banDh hai, the soul is banDh, is shackled, is imprisoned, the soul is imprisoned in this body. Why is the soul imprisoned in this body? Why have we come back onto this earth? Because of egotism. naam na vasai man aa-ay, naam, the name of God, na means cannot, vasai means to abide, man means in the mind, aa-ay means within, because of egotism, the name of God cannot abide in our minds.

naanak satgur mili-ai ha-umai ga-ee taa sach vasi-aa man aa-ay, nanak, Nanak says, satgur mili-ai, meeting the True Guru, ha-umai ga-ee, ga-ee means to go, to be eliminated, ha-umai means egotism, the egotism has been eliminated; taa sach vasi-aa man aa-ay, taa, then what happens, sach means the truth, vasi-aa means to dwell, to abide, man means in the mind, aa-ay means within. Meeting the True Guru, truly becoming one with the True Guru, by doing sewa of the True Guru, the Guru eliminates our hau-mai, and then we can find God within ourselves.

sach kamaavai sach rahai sachay sayv samaa-ay, sach kamaavai, sach, means the Truth, kamaavai means to practice, then one starts practicing the Truth, sach rahai, that person remains within the Truth, rahai means to remain within, to be one with, that person becomes one with the Truth; sachay sayv samaa-ay, by serving the True One, the sachai One, samaa-ay means to become absorbed into that person, that person becomes absorbed into the True Creator, God.

Guru Amardas ji is saying to us, abandon egotism, fall at the feet of the Guru, follow what the Guru says, and you will find God. Guru Sahib ji talks from his own experience, because Guru ji did sewa himself for 12 years of Guru Angad Dev ji, of bringing water for Guru Angad Dev ji’s ishnaan, for the daily bath. That sewa was so beautiful, and Guru ji is saying to us, that is the path of love.

har chayt man mayray too gur kaa sabad kamaa-ay. hukam maneh taa har milai taa vichahu ha-umai jaa-ay. rahaa-o.
