Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

Today’s hukam, in raag Tilang, is from Guru Nanak Devji.

During Guru Nanak’s lifetime India was invaded by Emperor Babbar in 1521 and Guru Nanak was deeply affected by the atrocities conducted during the invasion and by the suffering of the people.  His most touching verses about this are in the Babbar bani where he condemns war and exploitation.

The shabad is addressed to Bhai Lalo who was a humble carpenter, beloved of Guruji.  Guruji says, “Emperor Babbar has invaded India from Kabul and he is demanding the land of India as his wedding gift.” He talks about unrighteousness and says, “People take the false to be true and everyone has lost their place and is just in survival mode.  The evil is prevalent within the land and everyone is treated with great disrespect, people are being murdered.”  He uses the analogy of a wedding and at the wedding he says, “In this wedding the songs of murder are being sung and instead of the blessing of the wedding oil blood is being sprinkled.”  He says, “Even in the city where everyone is dying and slaughter is taking place he sings the praises of God.”  He says, “God is watching all of this happen and God is true and his justice is true.”

At the end of this hukam he makes a prediction and he says, “ India will be torn to pieces.”  Babbar comes in 1521 and departs in 1540.  He [Guru Nanak Devji] predicts the end of the reign of terror and his heart goes out to all those people who were killed and abused during that time.  So this hukam goes beyond that particular time to all times on the earth when unrighteousness prevails and people are murdered and abused.
