Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

Today’s hukam, in raag Tilang, is from Guru Nanak Devji.

During Guru Nanak’s lifetime India was invaded by Emperor Babbar in 1521 and Guru Nanak was deeply affected by the atrocities conducted during the invasion and by the suffering of the people.  His most touching verses about this are in the Babbar bani where he condemns war and exploitation.

The shabad is addressed to Bhai Lalo who was a humble carpenter, beloved of Guruji.  Guruji says, “Emperor Babbar has invaded India from Kabul and he is demanding the land of India as his wedding gift.” He talks about unrighteousness and says, “People take the false to be true and everyone has lost their place and is just in survival mode.  The evil is prevalent within the land and everyone is treated with great disrespect, people are being murdered.”  He uses the analogy of a wedding and at the wedding he says, “In this wedding the songs of murder are being sung and instead of the blessing of the wedding oil blood is being sprinkled.”  He says, “Even in the city where everyone is dying and slaughter is taking place he sings the praises of God.”  He says, “God is watching all of this happen and God is true and his justice is true.”

At the end of this hukam he makes a prediction and he says, “ India will be torn to pieces.”  Babbar comes in 1521 and departs in 1540.  He [Guru Nanak Devji] predicts the end of the reign of terror and his heart goes out to all those people who were killed and abused during that time.  So this hukam goes beyond that particular time to all times on the earth when unrighteousness prevails and people are murdered and abused.

Today’s Hukam is from Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

He says in this hukam that everything we see in this life is like a passing dream and that all of the play of the kings and all of the possesions of the rich people then people are preoccupied in getting with these things and having these things and people who do have these things . And he says that all of this fantasy and preoccupation of having these things is just a dream. And he says that in this dream , man enjoys all of these pleasures and  possessions and they seem sweet to him but that its all fake. None of it has any value.

But people become attached to the dream, to the illusion, but when we wake from this dream through the power of Naam then all of these things are forgotten. People spend their whole lives chasing after things instead of remaining still and letting things come to them. And then when its time to leave the earth, the work that you have come to do , that your soul was supposed to deliver to this earth before you left this lifetime, that the work is not completed and will leave without doing what we came here to do because you were so preoccupied with possessions and riches and all of these things on the physical planet. And then he says that people have no power to overcome the dream or to wake from the dream because even the fact that the people are dreaming  and caught up in the play of Maya is God’s will.
