Today’s hukmanama is by Guru Amar Daas Dev ji in raag Dhanaasaree page 664
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa! Raag Dhanaasree has a feeling of being carefree, a feeling of optimism for the future, as in the past has gone, the future is coming, and the future will be better. The shabad is given to us by Sri Guru Amar Daas ji the third Guru. Guru Amar Das ji met Guru Angaad Dev ji when he was over the age of 60. Guru Amar Das ji’s whole life as a Sikh was totally devoted to doing sewa for Sri Guru Angaad Dev ji. For twelve years he woke early in the morning in the amrit vela, the early hours, and walked to the river. He’d collect water for the Guru and he’d bring it back for the Guru’s ishnaan. The river was miles away. He used to walk there backwards, saying I don’t want to have my back to the Guru . That’s how much love he had for Guru ji. Before reading this hukam we have to understand that Guru Amar Das Ji’s sewa was so great, so amazing.
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
Jag mailaa mailo ho-ay jaa-ay.
The world is polluted. And instead of purifying ourselves, we wallow in the pollution of the world. The world is polluted by what? you may ask. Physically the world is polluted, but it’s also spiritually and mentally polluted. The vibes that people are giving out on the world are usually negative. The vibes of the sangat around you are usually kam, krodh, lobh, moh and ahankar. That’s kam which is lust, krodh which is anger, lobh which is greed, moh which is attachment and ahankar which is ego.
Aavai jaa-ay doojai lobhaa-ay.
In Gurmut, we believe in re-incarnation. Guruji is saying that reason for you going back into these lives and being reborn, for all of us, is that we get attached to duality, we don’t attach our minds to the one, to Ik Ongkar, to the one primal being. It’s our attachment to duality that brings us back on this earth. And what is duality? Duality is seeing anything apart from that one. The Guru Granth Sahib ji says ik bin dooja nahee koie . Without the one there is nothing else. The only way of ending this cycle of reincarnation is to see the one in everything.
Doojai bhaa-ay sabh paraj vigo-ee.
The love of this duality, of this maya around us, sabh paraj vigo-ee, paraj means population, vigo-ee means ruined, sabh means all. So for this love of maya the whole world has been ruined, has been infected.
Manmukh chotaa khaa-ay apunee pat kho-ee. ||1||
Those who follow theirs minds, they suffer punishment. Why is that? Because in following the mind we get attached to maya. We attach our thoughts to those things around us which are momentary, temporary. God is the only being who is permanent. Even Budhha said in his Dhammapada, in his religious teachings said, All things arise and pass away, but the awakened awake forever. Guru ji is saying something similar. Guru ji is saying that the whole world is temporary, and we suffer punishment when we attach ourselves to the temporary. If we attached ourselves to the permanent one, to Ik Ongkar, we wouldn’t suffer punishment. Maharaj says, Apunee pat kho-ee. This is the way in which we lose our honour, we lose our respect for our own souls.
Gur sayvaa tay jan nirmal ho-ay.
Guru ji has given us the answer here, in these lines of the rahao, the pause. This is the crux of the shabad. Gur sayvaa tay jan nirmal ho-ay. But there is a way of purifying. This is where the optimism of Raag Dhanseree comes in. Serving the Guru, doing the Guru’s sewa, one becomes pure. Nirmal means pure.
Antar naam vasai pat ootam ho-ay. rahaa-o.
Antar means inside, internally, naam vasai. Internally repeating the naam, the name of the Lord, meditating upon it, pat ootam ho-ay . Pat -your honour, your state, your respect for your soul grows, ootam ho-ay . We neglect our souls, that’s why we lose our respect for our souls, the honour of our souls. When we look after our souls, our atma, when we do naam simran, sewa, meditation… Then we’re looking after our souls. Then the state of our souls, of our spirituality becomes exalted, becomes high. Pat ootam ho-ay. Ootam means exalted. Rahaa-o. Pause and meditate on this line.
Gurmukh ubray har sarnaa-ee.
Gurmukh, the people who follow the Guru. Ubray -are saved in god’s sarane, under God’s (Har) protection.
