jgqu AigAwnI AMDu hY dUjY Bwie krm kmwie ]
jagat agi-aanee anDh hai doojai bhaa-ay karam kamaa-ay.
The world is blind and ignorant; in the love of materialism, it engages in actions.

dUjY Bwie jyqy krm kry duKu lgY qin Dwie ]
doojai bhaa-ay jaytay karam karay dukh lagai tan Dhaa-ay.
But those actions which are performed in the love of materialism, cause only pain to the body.

gur parsaadee sukh oopjai jaa gur kaa sabad kamaa-ay.
By Guru’s Grace, peace wells up, when one acts according to the Word of the Guru’s Shabad.

sachee banee karam karay an-din naam Dhi-aa-ay.
He acts according to the True Word of the Guru’s Bani; night and day, he meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

naanak jit aapay laa-ay tit lagay kahnaa kichhoo na jaa-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, as the Lord Himself engages him, so is he engaged; no one has any say in this matter. ||1||

Third Mehla:

hm Gir nwmu Kjwnw sdw hY Bgiq Bry BMfwrw ]
ham ghar naam khajaanaa sadaa hai bhagat bharay bhandaaraa.
Within the home of my own being, is the everlasting treasure of the Naam; it is a treasure house, brimming with devotion.

satgur daataa jee-a kaa sad jeevai dayvanhaaraa.
The True Guru is the Giver of the life of the soul; the Great Giver lives forever.

Anidnu kIrqnu sdw krih gur kY sbid Apwrw ]
an-din keertan sadaa karahi gur kai sabad apaaraa.
Night and day, I continually sing the Lord’s Praise, through the Infinite Word of the Guru’s Shabad.

sabad guroo kaa sad uchrahi jug jug vartaavanhaaraa.
I recite continually the Guru’s Shabads, which have been effective throughout the ages.

ih manoo-aa sadaa sukh vasai sehjay karay vaapaaraa.
This mind ever abides in peace, dealing in peace and poise.

AMqir gur igAwnu hir rqnu hY mukiq krwvxhwrw ]
antar gur gi-aan har ratan hai mukat karaavanhaaraa.
Deep within me is the Guru’s Wisdom, the Lord’s jewel, the Bringer of liberation.

naanak jis no nadar karay so paa-ay so hovai dar sachi-aaraa. ||2||
O Nanak, one who is blessed by the Lord’s Glance of Grace obtains this, and is judged to be True in the Court of the Lord. ||2||

Blessed, blessed is that Sikh of the Guru, who goes and falls at the Feet of the True Guru.

Dhan Dhan so gursikh kahee-ai jin har naamaa mukh raam kahi-aa.
Blessed, blessed is that Sikh of the Guru, who with his mouth, utters the Name of the Lord.

Dhan Dhan so gursikh kahee-ai jis har naam suni-ai man anad bha-i-aa.
Blessed, blessed is that Sikh of the Guru, whose mind, upon hearing the Lord’s Name, becomes blissful.

Dhan Dhan so gursikh kahee-ai jin satgur sayvaa kar har naam la-i-aa.
Blessed, blessed is that Sikh of the Guru, who serves the True Guru, and so obtains the Lord’s Name.

tis gursikh kaN-u haN-u sadaa namaskaaree jo gur kai bhaanai gursikh chali-aa. ||18||
I bow forever in deepest respect to that Sikh of the Guru, who walks in the Way of the Guru. ||18||

Today’s Hukamnama is by Guru Amardas Ji Maharaj. It is in the Raag Vadhans, on Ang 593 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj.

Raag Vadhans is the Raag where Punjabi folk songs were sung before the bride would marry the groom called ‘ghorri-ah’ and ‘suhaag’. These are sung in this Raag. The name of the Raag means “vad” means great and “hans” means swan. If you imagine the soul is like a swan and its reaching out to its’ full potential. The soul bride is in anticipation of that moment when she will merge into her husband Lord. This shabad is by Guru Amardas Ji who is the image of sewa.

Jagat agi-aanee anDh hai doojai bhaa-ay karam kamaa-ay.

Jagat” means the world, “agi-aanee” means ignorant. The world is ignorant but of what? The world is ignorant of love, of Waheguru, of that being who permeates through all of us. Due to this ignorance there is darkness. “AnDh hai” means blindness around the world. The world is blind to love and to God who permeates through all. “Doojai bhaa-ay karam kamaa-ay.” Due to all this blindness, darkness that surrounds us we are Doojai bhaa-ay, “bhaa-ay” means in attachment. Guru Ji says, “In this love of duality; of thinking dual, thinking about two things at once, not concentrating on the one we are going away from the message of ik-oNkaar.” If we are not concentrating on the one we are going away from the message of “ik-oNkaar” which tells us to focus on the one. “Karam kamaa-ay” where “karam” means actions and “kamaa-ay” means to do. We do actions but we act in blindness and in love of duality.

Doojai bhaa-ay jaytay karam karay dukh lagai tan Dhaa-ay.”

In this love of duality “doojai bhaa-ay” where “doojai” means in duality and “bhaa-ay” means love. “Jaytay” means all of these, “karam” means actions”, “karay” means the actions you do. Guru Ji says, “All the actions you do are in love of duality. What will this lead to? Dukh lagai.” They lead to pain, “tan Dhaa-ay” (caused to this body). “Dhaa-ay” means to cause to this body, “lagai” means to attach. So pain attaches itself to this body.

Gur parsaadee sukh oopjai jaa gur kaa sabad kamaa-ay.”

The only way of coming through this all is “Gur parsaadee“. “Parsaadee” means grace and “gur” means Guru. By the Guru’s grace “sukh oopjai“, we find true “sukh” which means peace and “oopjai” means is found from within you. With the Guru’s grace you find the true peace and “jaa gur kaa sabad kamaa-ay”. “Kamaa-ay” means to act, to live (in this case) according to the “gur kaa sabad“, the word “sabad” of the Guru “Gur kaa“. If with the Guru’s grace we act upon the word of the Guru, we meditate on the word of the Guru, we make the word of the Guru everything, then we shall find complete peace.

Sachee banee karam karay an-din naam Dhi-aa-ay.”

Sachee banee” means according to the true word, the true “banee“, the true vibration “karam karay“. If we are vibrating in the true vibration of the Lord’s word, of the Guru’s word, then everything we do; karam karay, all the actions we do will be truthful as well because we are vibrating on that vibration of truth. “An-din” means night and day, Guru Ji says meditate upon: “naam Dhi-aa-ay” where “naam” means the name of the Lord and “Dhi-aa-ay” means mediate.

Naanak jit aapay laa-ay tit lagay kahnaa kichhoo na jaa-ay. ||1||”

Naanak” means oh Nanak, “jit aapay laa-ay” where “aapay” means himself, “jit” means in which way, “laa-ay” means to engage. Guru Ji is saying, “Oh Nanak, the way in which the Lord himself engages, on this earth, the way in which he plays this game, “tit lagay“; All we can say about that is “tit lagay” where “lagay” means to engage in and “tit” means in that way. In that way he is engaged to this world, in that way he acts on this world.” “Kahnaa” means to say, “kichhoo” means something, “na” means nothing and “jaa-ay” means to do. No one else has a say in anything that happens. It is all the creation of the creator.

Mehlaa 3

Mehlaa” by Guru Amardas Ji.

Ham ghar naam khajaanaa sadaa hai bhagat bharay bhandaaraa.”

The “Salok” is there to put the original mood of the shabad, the “mehlaa” explains that a bit more and the “paouree” is the final exultation of that original point. Guru Ji is saying inside me I have found where “ham” means mine and “ghar” means house. Guru Ji says, “Within my true house, within my own being, within my soul naam khajaanaa sadaa hai“. I realised the “khajaanaa” (the treasure) of “naam” (the name of the Lord) is “sadaa hai” (has always been there and shall always been there).” “Sadaa” means everlasting and has always been there and shall always be there. The thing which is “Aadh sach jugaadh sach hai bhee sach naanak hosee bhee sach” which means there in the beginning, there in the future, there presently, will always be there and is always doing everything. “Bhagat” means devotion”, “bharay” means to be filled with and “bhandaaraa” means a treasure house, a place where treasure is stored. It’s a place where the treasure of devotion is stored forever.

Satgur daataa jee-a kaa sad jeevai dayvanhaaraa.”

Satgur daataa” means the true Guru who is the giver. What does he give? “Jee-a kaa” means gives life to the soul. “Sad” means always, forever that great Guru, “jeevai” means to live. The great giver (”dayvanhaaraa“) Guru lives forever.

An-din keertan sadaa karahi gur kai sabad apaaraa.”

An-din” means night and day, “sadaa karahi” means to do all the time. Night and day, all the time, I know sing the praises, the “keertan” which means the Lord’s praises, I sing the praises of the Guru and the Lord. How do I do that though? Through “gur kai sabad“, Guru’s word, I remember the Guru’s word, I repeat the Guru’s “banee“. I repeat the Guru’s mantra and get to that vibration inside me. “Apaaraa” means the one who is infinite, the one who is beyond boundaries. “Paar” is a boundary and “apaaraa” means the one who is beyond boundaries. I take my soul vibration to the vibration of that Lord who is beyond boundaries through the Guru’s “shabad“.

Sabad guroo kaa sad uchrahi jug jug vartaavanhaaraa.”

Sabad guroo kaa” means the Guru’s “sabad“, the Guru’s word, “uchrahi” means to recite/repeat, “sad” means all the time. I always, continually repeat this, to repeat these words of the Guru’s “sabad“. “Vartaavanhaaraa” loosely in English means something, which is effective, has always worked. “Jug jug” means throughout the ages. Throughout all the ages, the word of the Guru, “guroo kaa sabad“, this eternal vibration has been saving people.

Ih manoo-aa sadaa sukh vasai sehjay karay vaapaaraa.”

Ih manoo-aa” means this mind of mine, “sadaa” means always, “sukh” means peace, “vasai” means dwells. This mind always dwells in peace now. “Vaapaaraa” means to deal in, “karay” means to. What does this mind deal in? Does it deal in anger? Does it deal in lust? Does it deal in attachment? No, it doesn’t deal in these things. Now it deals in “sehjay” which means complete and utter celestial peace. That’s what it deals in. It’s become a merchant of the “naam“, the name of the Lord.

Antar gur gi-aan har ratan hai mukat karaavanhaaraa.”

Antar” means deep inside me, “gur gi-aan” means Guru’s knowledge, which is “har ratan” where “har” means the Lord and “ratan” means the jewel. That is Hari’s diamond jewel inside me. Why? Due to “mukat karaavanhaaraa” where “karaavanhaaraa” means the one being capable of. The Guru’s wisdom, the Guru’s “gi-aan“, the Guru’s spiritual knowledge is the key to my liberation. “Mukat” means liberation.

Naanak jis no nadar karay so paa-ay so hovai dar sachi-aaraa. ||2||Pa-orhee.”

Naanak jis no nadar karay“, oh Nanak, “nada” means glance of grace, “jis no” upon whom. Oh Nanak, upon whom God shines his glance of grace, “karay” means does. “So paa-ay” means that person receives that knowledge, that “naam“. “So hovai” means that person, “dar” means at the court of the Lord. That person when they are judged at the court of the Lord, “so hovai dar sachi-aaraa“. At the court of the Lord they are deemed “sachi-aaraa” meaning truthful. Why? Because they have meditated upon the truth and have become one with the vibration of truth.

Dhan Dhan so gursikh kahee-ai jo satgur charnee jaa-ay pa-i-aa.”

Dhan Dhan” means blessed, blessed “so gursikh” is that Guru ka Sikh. “Kahee-ai” means to call. We should call that “gursikh”, “dhan dhan…jo satgur charnee jaa-ay pa-i-aa“. That Sikh of the Guru, the follower of the Guru, the one who is in love with the Guru, that Guru’s Sikh, “jo satgur charnee” which means the feet (”charnee“) of the true Guru (”satgur“) who “jaa-ay” (means to go) “pa-i-aa” (to fall). The “gursikh“, the Sikh of the Guru, who goes and falls at the feet of the true Guru, s/he is blessed. What does this mean? Each day if we go to the Gurdwara, we do matha tekna, where we physically bow. But Guru Ji is talking about a spiritual bowing. This is where you bow to the Guru, you give up all of your ‘I’. That “gursikh” can give up his “hau-mai“, his ego and fall at the feet of the Guru. S/he is blessed and Guru Ji is calling them blessed. To truly fall at the feet of the Guru is to give up all that is ‘I’ to give up all that is ego.

Dhan Dhan so gursikh kahee-ai jin har naamaa mukh raam kahi-aa.”

Dhan Dhan so gursikh kahee-ai” means that Sikh of the Guru is blessed, blessed “jin har naamaa mukh raam kahi-aa“. That Sikh, that follower of the path who, “jin“, “har” means the Lord and “naamaa” means Haris’ name. “Mukh” means with his mouth, “raam” means the name of the Lord, the one who permeates through all. “Kahi-aa” means to repeat. The “gursikh” who with his mouth repeats the Hari “naam“, the name of the Lord, the one who repeats “raam” with his mouth, the name of that beloved Lord, that “gursikh” is blessed, blessed Guru Amardas Ji says.

Dhan Dhan so gursikh kahee-ai jis har naam suni-ai man anad bha-i-aa.”

Dhan Dhan so gursikh kahee-ai” means blessed, blessed is that “gursikh… jis har naam suni-ai man anad bha-i-aa.” “Suni-ai” means to listen, “har naam” means to the name of the Lord. That person, that “gursikh“, that Sikh of the Guru who upon listening to the Guru’s word, “man” means in his/her mind, “anad” means celestial peace, blessings, heavenly happiness, “bha-i-aa” means upon who’s mind this celestial peace, this complete tranquility, upon listening to the name of the Lord is experienced.

Dhan Dhan so gursikh kahee-ai jin satgur sayvaa kar har naam la-i-aa.”

Blessed, blessed is that Sikh of the Guru, “jin satgur sayvaa kar har naam la-i-aa.” “Jin satgur sayvaa“, who has done the selfless service (”sayvaa“) of the true Guru (”satgur“). By doing this selfless service of the true Guru “kar har naam la-i-aa.” “Kar” means by doing this. “La-i-aa” means has obtained, received as a blessing from the true Guru the “har naam” the name of the Lord.

Tis gursikh kaN-u haN-u sadaa namaskaaree jo gur kai bhaanai gursikh chali-aa. ||18||”

Tis gursikh kaN-u haN-u sadaa namaskaaree” means to that “gursikh“, to that Sikh of the Guru (”kaN-u“), “sadaa” means forever, “namaskaaree” means to bow. Guru Amardas Ji is saying here, I bow to that Sikh o the Guru. Which Sikh of the Guru? “Jo gur kai bhaanai gursikh chali-aa”. “chali-aa” means to walk, the “gursikh” who lives his life in “gur kai bhaanai” the path/way of the Guru. where “bhaanai” means the will.

On this day, Guru Amardas Ji has blessed us with this Hukamnama. May he also bless us with the strength and courage to walk on the path of the Guru.

Jagat agi-aanee anDh hai doojai bhaa-ay karam kamaa-ay. Doojai bhaa-ay jaytay karam karay dukh lagai tan Dhaa-ay.”
