Tirath naavan jaa-o tirath naam hai
Tirath means pilgrimage. Jaa-o means to go to and naavan means to bathe at. Sikhs once asked Guru Nanak, "What holy place should we bathe at? What’s the pilgrimage for us?" The idea at that time was to travel to a holy place, and have a bath at that holy place so that your sins could be washed away. Guru Nanak said, tirath naam hai. The true pilgrimage, the true holy shrine, is the name of the lord. Hai means is and naam means the name of the Lord.
Tirath sabad beechaar antar gi-aan hai
The holy pilgrimage is the sabad. Beechaar. Beechaar means the wisdom of, the enjoyment of. Sabad means the word, the naam. The true pilgrimage is the sabad enjoying, becoming one with the sabad. Antar gi-aan hai. As you bathe in the naam, as you wash away your sins with the name of God… Inside you antar the wisdom inside you awakens. (Gian means spiritual wisdom.)
Gur gi-aan saachaa thaan tirath das purab sadaa dasaahraa
The Guru’s sacred wisdom is true. Thaan tirath means the sacred shrine of pilgrimage. Das purab means ten festivals. Das means ten and purab mean festivals. Ten festivals are celebrated. Dasaahraa means celebrated, at all times sada. The spiritual knowledge of the Guru is the true holy shrine of pilgrimage, and when you enshrine that in your soul, and in your heart, then according to Hindu mythology, there are ten festivals to observe, to go and bathe at. But Guruji says that on those pilgrimages, you only go on the days of the ten festivals, but inside you when you have that spiritual wisdom, the ten festivals are always being celebrated inside you.
There is also another meaning in the last word of this line. Das means ten. Now on us there are ten indrees, basically ten senses, we have ten senses according to gurbani. Hraa means to win. Guruji is saying you can win over those ten senses, that take you into maya. You can internalize those ten senses and use them to find God.
