Today’s hukamnama is by Guru Nanak Devji in Sorath Raag on Ang 598 of Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj

Apnw Gru mUsq rwiK n swkih kI pr Gru john lwgw ]
apnaa ghar moosat raakh na saakeh kee par ghar johan laagaa.
You cannot save your own home from being plundered; why do you spy on the houses of others?

Gru dru rwKih jy rsu cwKih jo gurmuiK syvku lwgw ]1]
ghar dar raakhahi jay ras chaakhahi jo gurmukh sayvak laagaa. ||1||
That Gurmukh who joins himself to the Guru’s service, saves his own home, and tastes the Lord’s Nectar. ||1||

man ray samajh kavan mat laagaa.
O mind, you must realize what your intellect is focused on.

naam visaar an ras lobhaanay fir pachhutaahi abhaagaa. rahaa-o.
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, one is involved with other tastes; the unfortunate wretch shall come to regret it in the end. ||Pause||

Awvq kau hrK jwq kau rovih iehu duKu suKu nwly lwgw ]
aavat ka-o harakh jaat ka-o roveh ih dukh sukh naalay laagaa.
When things come, he is pleased, but when they go, he weeps and wails; this pain and pleasure remains attached to him.

Awpy duK suK Boig BogwvY gurmuiK so Anrwgw ]2]
aapay dukh sukh bhog bhogaavai gurmukh so anraagaa. ||2||
The Lord Himself causes him to enjoy pleasure and endure pain; the Gurmukh, however, remains unaffected. ||2||

hir rs aUpir Avru ikAw khIAY ijin pIAw so iqRpqwgw ]
har ras oopar avar ki-aa kahee-ai jin pee-aa so tariptaagaa.
What else can be said to be above the subtle essence of the Lord? One who drinks it in is satisfied and satiated.

maa-i-aa mohit jin ih ras kho-i-aa jaa saakat durmat laagaa. ||3||
One who is lured by Maya loses this juice; that faithless cynic is tied to his evil-mindedness. ||3||

man kaa jee-o pavanpat dayhee dayhee meh day-o samaagaa.
The Lord is the life of the mind, the Master of the breath of life; the Divine Lord is contained in the body.

jay too deh ta har ras gaa-ee man tariptai har liv laagaa. ||4||
If You so bless us, Lord, then we sing Your Praises; the mind is satisfied and fulfilled, lovingly attached to the Lord. ||4||

saaDhsangat meh ras paa-ee-ai gur mili-ai jam bha-o bhaagaa.
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the subtle essence of the Lord is obtained; meeting the Guru, the fear of death departs.

naanak raam naam jap gurmukh har paa-ay mastak bhaagaa. ||5||10||
O Nanak, chant the Name of the Lord, as Gurmukh; you shall obtain the Lord, and realize your pre-ordained destiny. ||5||10|| 

Hukamnama today is in the Sorath Raag and this raag carries the feeling of strong belief, a strong conviction which totally absorbs you as you listen to it. The shabad is given to us by Guru Nanak Devji Maharaj in panchpaday. Panch means five and paday literally means feet. So the meaning we can take from this is five parts, there are five steps to this shabad.

Apnaa ghar moosat raakh na saakeh kee par ghar johan laagaa. Aapna means your own and ghar means home, moosat means to be plundred, to be robbed, to be looted, Raakh means to save, na saakeh means you cannot, you do not have the wisdom. Guruji is saying, “You do not have the wisdom to save your own house, you do not have the energy to save your own home from being looted from being plundered.” Kee means why, par means others, ghar means house of, johan means to look at, to spy on, laaga means to be engaged in. Guruji says in the second half of this line, “You are engaged in spying on the houses of others.” Guruji is saying this on a much deeper level. What is our own home? Our true home within us is our soul, our true home is what is inside us, not the bricks we live in! Because this lifetime and the next time time are not ours. So Guruji is saying to us, “Your house, the treasure inside of you is being looted everyday.” By whom? By robbers? Not physical robbers but by kaam; desire, krodh; anger, lobh; greed, moh; attachment and ahnkaar; ego. These are looting us all the time? But what do we do? We don’t focus on what is happening to us, rather than trying to save our own soul we look at other people, we point out bad things about other person. Oh look at this person he does this, oh look at that person she does that. Look at this! Look at that! We don’t look at ourselves! Guruji is saying, “You are being robbed, don’t worry about the other person.” We do nindiya of people, we slander people but we don’t look at ourselves. We don’t realize that when we point one finger at another person there are four fingers pointing back at us.

Ghar dar raakhahi jay ras chaakhahi jo Gurmukh sayvak laagaa. Ghar means house, dar means door, raakhahi means to save, ras means the sublime essence of God, chaakhahi means to taste, to enjoy. Guruji says, “The only way to save your soul, your house, the door to your soul is to taste the sublime essence of God’s nector within you.” Go inside you and find God inside you. How do you do this? This is explained in the second half of the line. Jo means who, mukh means face, Gur means Guru; the one who has his face towards the Guru. Spiritually that means the person who follows the Guru through thick and thin, a person who follows everything that the Guru says, sayvak means to serve, laagaa means to engage, to join. That Gurmukh who engages himself in the sewa of the Guru will taste the sublime essence within them. He sees God within himself and then he is saved from the robbers of by kaam; desire, krodh; anger, lobh; greed, moh; attachment and ahnkaar; egotism.

Man ray samajh kavan mat laagaa. Man ray means Oh my mind, samajh means to gain some understanding, to realize, to wake up, kavan means what, mat means intellect thinking, laagaa means again to be engaged in, to be focused on. Oh my mind wake up, what is your intellect focused on! What are you thinking about? Realise! Sometimes we try and kid ourselves that we are thinking good things but really inside us we are thinking bad things. Guruji is saying, “Wake up! Realise where your mind is going. You are not on the path, you are falling off.”

Naam visaar an ras lobhaanay fir pachhutaahi abhaagaa. Naam means the name of Lord Waheguru, visaar means to forget, to caste away, an means other, ras means essence, taste, lobhaanay means to be completely engrossed in, fir means one day, pachhutaahi means to regret, achaagaa means unfortunate. We forget the name of the Lord, the true essence that is inside us, because it is harder to find that. To find it we have to go inside and we get involved in the essences outside. We get involved in maya, we get involved in loving what is external but we don’t look inside us. It is very easy to pick up rocks as you walk over a mountain because they are on the surface. But to actually dig a mine into that mountain and look inside to find the diamond which is in that mountain is very hard. Guruji says, “One day you will regret this, oh you unfortunate soul! You will regret forgetting the naam.”

Rahaa-o. Guruji says, “Pause and think about this very hard.”

Aavat ka-o harakh jaat ka-o roveh ih dukh sukh naalay laagaa. Aavat means when something comes, harakh means to be pleased, jaat means when things go away, roveh means to cry, dukh means pain, sukh means pleasure, naalay means to the soul, to the human, laagaa means to be attached. When things come to you, you get pleased because you gain something physical. You cry when things go. Guruji says, “This pain and pleasure is attached to the human.” We think that if we gain physical things we will get that peace, but we won’t! Everything that comes has to go. Pain is just a prelude to pleasure and pleasure is just a prelude to pain.

Aapay dukh sukh bhog bhogaavai Gurmukh so anraagaa. Aapay means God himself (in this context), bhog bhogaavai means to take part in, to enjoy, anraagaa; raag (in this context) means to be affected, to be moved out of that sahej, anraagaa means you cannot be. God himself causes a human being to enjoy and endure pain and pleasure. But the one who has his face towards the Guru, he is unaffected by pain and pleasure. The Gurmukh knows if pain comes pleasure will come afterwards and if pleasure comes pain will come afterwards. These are both transitory things.

Har ras oopar avar ki-aa kahee-ai jin pee-aa so tariptaagaa. Har means the Lord, the nourisher, nurturer, God, ras means the essence, oopar means greater than har ras, avar means other things, ki-aa kahee-ai means what can we say about them, jin means that person, so means that person, tariptaagaa means completely satisfied. How can we say that anything is greater than the essence of hari, the Lord, because it’s not. What happens is that the person who drinks this essence within themselves becomes completely satisfied because they have no desired left. They have no kaam; desire, krodh; anger, lobh; greed, moh; attachment and ahnkaar; egotism.

Maa-i-aa mohit jin ih ras kho-i-aa jaa saakat durmat laagaa. Mohit means to be lured, maa-i-aa means the transitory physical world, ih means this, ras means essence, kho-i-aa means to lose, to forasakae, saakat means faithless, someone with no faith and love inside them, dur means evilness, mat means thinking, laagaa means to be attached to . The person who is lured by and attached to maa-i-aa, that person who forsakes the true essence for transitory essences of maa-i-aa is faithless and becomes attached to evil thoughts.

Man kaa jee-o pavanpat dayhee dayhee meh day-o samaagaa. Man means the mind, jee-o means life, pavan means the breath inside of you, pat means the Lord of, dayhee means body, day-o means the divine being, that Lord, samaagaa means to be contained within. God is the one who gives life to your mind. God is the Lord of the breath you breath which keeps you and your body alive. “That Lord, that divine being is contained within your body”, God is saying.

Jay too deh ta har ras gaa-ee man tariptai har liv laagaa. Jay means if, too deh means to bless, ta means then, har ras means the sublime essence of Lord, gaa-ee means to sing, man means mind, tariptai means to be satisfied, har means Lord, liv laagaa means to be attached to. Oh God if you bless us we sing your praises. My mind is satisfied when it is attached to you oh Lord, when I am with you oh Lord.

SaaDhsangat meh har ras paa-ee-ai gur mili-ai jam bha-o bhaagaa. SaaDhsangat means the company of the holy, the congregation of the holy, paa-ee-ai means to gain, mili-ai means to meet, gur means the guru, jam means the angels of death, bha-o means fear, bhaagaa means to depart, to go away. Where can you find this har ras? Guruji says, “By joining the saadhsangat; the company of the holy, the angels of death, the fear of death you have inside of you departs, goes, falls away." You don’t fear death, you become immortal. You realize your soul has always been immortal.

Naanak raam naam jap Gurmukh har paa-ay mastak bhaagaa. Raam means the one who permeates through all, naam means the name of Lord, paa-ay means to obtain, to find, har means the Lord, mastak means your forehead, bhaagaa means your fortune. Oh Nanak always follow the Guru, become a Gurmukh and meditate upon the name of Lord who permeates through all. Realize the fortune of your forehead. Realize that every human being’s destiny is to fall back into the ocean of God because we are all drops separated from that. Each one of us have our destiny as to fall back into that ocean.

I leave you again with the rahaao line. May Guruji help us to wake up on this day that He has blessed with this hukam. May we realize where our lives are going. May with His grace we too drink that sublime essence of har ras.
