O Nanak, whose who have met the True Guru, have their accounts settled. ||18||1||2||

Guru Amardasji Maharaj, the embodiment of seva in the house of Guru Nanak speaks to us in the Aasaa raag. In this raag of Aasaa Guru Amardasji begins with the Mangla Charan, “Ik-onkaar satgur parsaad.” There is One eternal, creative, nourishing and destructive being who is found the through the True Guru’s grace. This shabad is in the Patee style. Patee literally means the thing upon which, the board upon which the children used to write the alphabet. Guruji is writing this in that style explaining the letters of the alphabet but with a spiritual significance.

“Ayo anyai sabh jag aa-i-aa kaakhai ghanyai kaal bha-i-aa.” Ayo anyai are both the first letter of the alphabet, sabh means all, jag means world, aa-i-aa means to come, to be created or to come into existence. The whole world has been created, the whole world is born, the whole world has come onto this earth. kaakhai ghanyai are again letters of the alphabet, kaal means death, bha-i-aa means to be subjected to. Guruji says, “When you look at these letters remember that everybody will be subjected to death, come to an end. Everything that is created will pass away.”

Reeree lalee paap kamaanay parh avgan gun veesri-aa. Reeree lalee are two letters of the alphabet, paap means sin, kamaanay means to commit, parh means to study, to focus upon, avgan means vices, bad things, gun means virtue, veesri-aa means to forget. Guruji says, “Everybody is committing sins, bad things.” Everybody studies, focuses upon bad things, bad qualities in this world. We focus so much on the negative within us and around us that we have forgotten the virtues of life, the good things of life.

Man aisaa laykhaa toon kee parhi-aa. Man means mind, aisaa means this type of, laykhaa means account, toon kee, means why have you, parhi-aa means to study. Oh my mind why have you focused upon, why have you studied this type of an account? Why have you accumulated these types of thoughts, these types of bad actions? Laykhaa daynaa tayrai sir rahi-aa. Because of what you have done you will be asked to give an account. You will have to give an account of everything you have done. It is above your head. Guruji is saying, “Remember, you will have to account for everything that you have done. Why have you done these bad things? Why are you focusing on these negative things?” It is like what Shekh Fareed Ji says, he says, “Fareeda jinni kammi na ek gun te kamray vissar. Mat sarminda thivayi saayin de darbar.” Oh Fareed forget those things, give up those works, and give up those evil qualities which have no virtue. Why? Because in the court of your beloved you will be put to shame if you do those things, things that are evil. So forget them, leave them. That is what Guru ji is saying.

Rahaa-o. Guruji says, “Pause and think about this.”

Sidhannyaa-ee-ai simrahi naahee nannai naa tudh naam la-i-aa. Sidhan & nyaa-ee-ai are two letters of the alphabet, simrahi means to meditate, naahee means to not. Guruji says, “When you read these, remember, you are not meditating upon your Lord.” Nannai is another letter of alphabet, naa means to not, tudh means you, naam means the word of the Guru, the mantra of the Guru, la-i-aa means to take. Guruji says, “Look at this and remember, you have not even taken upon the word of the Guru, the mantra of the Guru.”

Chhachhai chheejeh ahinis moorhay ki-o chhooteh jam paakrhi-aa. Chhachhai chheejeh are letters of alphabet, ahinis means day and night, moorhay means fool, ki-o means how, chhooteh means to escape, jam means the angels of death, paakrhi-aa means grip. When you look at the letter chhachhai, realize that you are wearing away day and night, you are getting closer to death. How will you escape form the grip of the angels of death. “The only way is to mediate”, Guruji is saying.

Babai boojheh naahee moorhay bharam bhulay tayraa janam ga-i-aa. Babai is another letter of alphabet, boojheh means to understand, naahee means to not, moorhay means fool, bharam means doubt, bhulay means to forget, tayraa means yours, janam means life, ga-i-aa means to pass. When you look at the letter Babai understand that you have no understanding. Realize that you do not understand, Why? Because you are deluded by doubt. You question constantly what the Guru says but you don’t act upon it. Your whole life is wasted.

Anhodaa naa-o dharaa-i-o paadhaa avraa kaa bhaar tudh la-i-aa. Anhodaa means without cause, without any justification, without any reason, without any virtue, naa-o means name, dharaa-i-o means to be called, paadhaa means pandit, teacher, avraa kaa bhaar tudh la-i-aa. Without any reason, without any virtue you call yourself a pandit, a teacher but you have nothing to teach, you haven’t learnt the lessons yourself. You say that you are spiritually a stew but really it is all a fuss. All you are doing is taking the weight of others upon yourself.

Jajai jot hir la-ee tayree moorhay ant ga-i-aa pachhutaavhigaa. When you look at the Jajai realize that, oh fool, one day the light of God inside you will be taken away. It will leave your body. When in the end you will have to leave this body you will repent, you will feel sorry. Why? Because Ayk sabad toon cheeneh naahee fir fir joonee aavhigaa. You do not remember that one word, that blessing of the Guru, that Shabad which can liberate you. Because of that you will come again and again, you will be born again and again.

Tudh sir likhi-aa so parh pandit avraa no na sikhaal bikhi-aa. Oh religious teacher, oh scholar, read what is written on your forehead. What is that saying? That is saying that understand what is going on within yourself. Internally understand is going on. Don’t criticize others, don’t look at others but focus on yourself and what you have done. Do not teach poison to others.

Pahilaa faahaa pa-i-aa paadhay pichho day gal chaatrhi-aa. First you are putting that noose into your own neck, oh teacher and then you are placing into the neck of all those people who follow you! Sasai sanjam ga-i-o moorhay ayk daan tudh kuthaa-ay la-i-aa. When you look at the letter sasaa realize that fool you have lost your self control, your self discipline, your purity. You have accepted offerings under false motives. You tell people you are a man of God but really you are not!

Saa-ee putree jajmaan kee saa tayree ayt dhaan khaadhai tayraa janam ga-i-aa. Guruji speaks to the religious teacher of this time in this line. The daughter of the one who is giving you these alms, these spiritual alms (alms are what you give in charity to a religious teacher, a pandit, in India) realize that the daughter of the one who is giving you these alms, who is feeding you for his house, is like your own. This has various implications; firstly, to the old religious teacher: “You are telling others to be pure yet you keep an impure and evil eye at the daughter of that person from whom house you eat from!” By eating the wealth, by eating and accepting the payments for conducting all these ceremonies for all these people your whole life is wasted. Guruji is talking about the wedding ceremony here, in particular. So Guruji is talking to them but He is also talking to us as well.

Mammai mat hir la-ee tayree moorhay ha-umai vadaa rog pa-i-aa. When you look at the letter mammai realize that your intellect is gone. Oh fool, realize you have no intellect! Because you are afflicted by the the great illness of ego. Antar aatmai barahm na cheenhi-aa maa-i-aa kaa muhtaaj bha-i-aa. Within yourself you do not see, you do not realize that God is within you. Instead you sell yourself for the sake of this illusion around us. Kakai kaam krodh bharmi-ohu moorhay mamtaa laagay tudh har visri-aa. When you look at the letter kaka realize that you are deluded, you are wondering around in sexual desire, in all desire. Kaam is not just sexual desire, kaam is any desire and also in krodh, in anger Oh fool! You will forget Waheguru, you will forget Hari who created the world, who created you when you are entangled in attachment.

Parheh guneh toon bahut pukaareh vin boojhay toon doob mu-aa. You read out loud, you make many proclamations, tell many other people many other things but without any understanding you will drown. Tatai taamas jali-ohu moorhay thathai thaan bharisat ho-aa. When you look at the letter tataa realize that you are burning in evil thoughts, oh fool. When you look at the letter thathai realize that your innermost home, your soul within you has been made impure by these impure thoughts.

Ghaghai ghar ghar fireh toon moorhay dadai daan na tudh la-i-aa. When you look at the letter ghaghaa realize that you are walking house to house, you are begging from door to door, oh fool! When you look at the letter dada realize that the true gift of Naam, you haven’t asked for that from God. You wonder from house to house, from place to place. This is like us as well, Guruji is not just talking to the pandit of that time but he is talking to us as well! We wonder from place to place but we do not give ourselves up to the Guru! That is why we haven’t been blessed with Naam.

Papai paar na pavhee moorhay parpanch toon palach rahi-aa. Oh fool, when you look at the word papaa realize that you will not be able to swim across this world ocean. Why? Because you are engrossed in all these worldly affairs. Sachai aap khu-aa-i-ohu moorhay ih sir tayrai laykh pa-i-aa. . Oh fool! The true Lord Himself, Waheguru Himself has put you off the path Himself. This is what has been written upon your forehead, upon your destiny. Bhabhai bhavjal dubohu moorhay maa-i-aa vich galtaan bha-i-aa. When you look at the letter bhabhaa realize that you are drowning in this world ocean, in the ocean of fear, oh fool! You are intoxicated by this illusion.

Gur parsaadee ayko jaanai ayk gharhee meh paar pa-i-aa. Those people who by the Guru Grace who realize that great Lord is permeating within them, in one instant they are liberated. Vavai vaaree aa-ee-aa moorhay vaasuday-o tudh veesri-aa. When you look at the letter Vavaa realize that your turn has come to meet God. Guru Arjun Devji says, “ Bhaee prapat maanukh dehuriya Gobind Milan ki eh teri baariya.” This is your chance but you have forgotten the Lord of light, you have forgotten Waheguru.

Ayh vaylaa na lehsahi moorhay fir toon jam kai vas pa-i-aa. Oh fool, this time will not come again and again, this opportunity will not come again and again because then you will be under the power of death. Jhajhai kaday na jhooreh moorhay satgur kaa updays sun toon vikhaa. When you look at the letter Jhajhai realize that you will never have to regret, oh fool! But you will only never have to regret IF even for a second you listen to the true Guru’s message. Satgur baajhahu gur nahee ko-ee niguray kaa hai naa-o buraa. Without the true Guru there is no other Guru at all. That person who is without a Guru, even that person’s name is bad!

Dhadhai dhaavat varaj rakh moorhay antar tayrai nidhaan pa-i-aa. When you look at the letter dhadhaa realize that you must restrain this wondering mind, oh fool! Deep within you there is a treausure, find it! Gurmukh hoveh taa har ras peeveh jugaa jugantar khaahi pa-i-aa. Those people who follow the Guru completely end up drinking that Har ras; That essence of God. Age after age they drink again and again, they are engrossed, they are blessed with this ecstasy. Gagai gobid chit kar moorhay galee kinai na paa-i-aa. Oh fool, within your mind contemplate upon Gobind, upon that Lord of the universe. No one has found God through mere words, but only through love.

Gur kay charan hirdai vasaa-ay moorhay pichhlay gunah sabh bakhas la-i-aa. Enshrine the Guru’s feet, the Guru’s understanding within your heart and then all your past evil actions will be forgiven. Haahai har kathaa boojh toon moorhay taa sadaa sukh ho-ee. When you look at the letter hahaa realize and understand the message of God, oh fool, then you will be blessed with peace for ever. Manmukh parheh taytaa dukh laagai vin satgur mukat na ho-ee. People who follow their mind they read, but the more they read the more pain they go into because they are in the cycle of intellect. Without the true Guru no one will find liberatioin no matter how much they read.

Raarai raam chit kar moorhay hirdai jinh kai rav rahi-aa. When you look at the letter raaraa in your mind focus upon raam, upon Waheguru who is going through all, oh fool! Also meditate upon those people in whose heart Lord abides. Gur parsaadee jinhee raam pachhaataa nirgun raam tinhee boojh lahi-aa. Through the Guru’s grace those people who realize that God is within them they become one with that formless God. Tayraa ant na jaa-ee lakhi-aa akath na jaa-ee har kathi-aa. Your end, your limits, oh Waheguru, cannot be known by anyone. You are indescribabale oh Lord, you cannot be described! Naanak jinh ka-o satgur mili-aa tinh kaa laykhaa nibrhi-aa. Oh Nanak people who have met the true Guru their accounts have been settled for ever and ever.

Guruji is saying, “Look at each of these letters and take that spiritual knowledge and understand that you must fall at the feet of the Guru if you are to find Guru.”

Man aisaa laykhaa toon kee parhi-aa. Laykhaa daynaa tayrai sir rahi-aa. Rahaa-o.
