English translation of the daily Hukamnama.

The hukamnama today is by Bhagat Kabeer Ji in Raag Gond on Ang 870 of Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj.

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

Bujw bWiD iBlw kir fwirE ]
bhujaa baa(n)dhh bhilaa kar ddaariou ||
They tied my arms, bundled me up, and threw me before an elephant.

hsqI kRoip mUMf mih mwirE ]
hasathee krop moo(n)dd mehi maariou ||
The elephant driver struck him on the head, and infuriated him.

hsiq Bwig kY cIsw mwrY ]
hasath bhaag kai cheesaa maarai ||
But the elephant ran away, trumpeting,

ieAw mUriq kY hau bilhwrY ]1]
eiaa moorath kai ho balihaarai ||1||
“I am a sacrifice to this image of the Lord.”||1||

Awih myry Twkur qumrw joru ]
aahi maerae t(h)aakur thumaraa jor ||
O my Lord and Master, You are my strength.

kaajee bakibo hasathee thor ||1|| rehaao ||
The Qazi shouted at the driver to drive the elephant on. ||1||Pause||

ry mhwvq quJu fwrau kwit ]
rae mehaavath thujh ddaaro kaatt ||
He yelled out, “”O driver, I shall cut you into pieces.

iesih qurwvhu Gwlhu swit ]
eisehi thuraavahu ghaalahu saatt ||
Hit him, and drive him on!”"

hasath n thorai dhharai dhhiaan ||
But the elephant did not move; instead, he began to meditate.

vw kY irdY bsY Bgvwnu ]2]
vaa kai ridhai basai bhagavaan ||2||
The Lord God abides within his mind. ||2||

ikAw AprwDu sMq hY kIn@w ]
kiaa aparaadhh sa(n)th hai keenhaa ||
What sin has this Saint committed,

bWiD pot kuMcr kau dIn@w ]
baa(n)dhh pott ku(n)char ko dheenhaa ||
that you have made him into a bundle and thrown him before the elephant?

kuMcru pot lY lY nmskwrY ]
ku(n)char pott lai lai namasakaarai ||
Lifting up the bundle, the elephant bows down before it.

bUJI nhI kwjI AMiDAwrY ]3]
boojhee nehee kaajee a(n)dhhiaarai ||3||
The Qazi could not understand it; he was blind. ||3||

qIin bwr pqIAw Bir lInw ]
theen baar patheeaa bhar leenaa ||
Three times, he tried to do it.

mn kToru AjhU n pqInw ]
man kat(h)or ajehoo n patheenaa ||
Even then, his hardened mind was not satisfied.

kih kbIr hmrw goibMdu ]
kehi kabeer hamaraa gobi(n)dh ||
Says Kabeer, such is my Lord and Master.

cauQy pd mih jn kI ijMdu ]4]1]4]
chouthhae padh mehi jan kee ji(n)dh ||4||1||4||
The soul of His humble servant dwells in the fourth state. ||4||1||4||

Today Bhagat Kabeer ji talks to us in the Gond Raag and this shabad by Kabeer ji is descrbing the time when the Kazis and the Pandits, the religious teachers of the time, plotted to kill Kabeer ji, by complaining about Kabeer ji to the Emperor, Sultan of that time.

Kabeer ji begins with the mangala charan
ik oa(n)kaar sathigur prasaadh
There is one eternal, universal, creative, nourishing and destructive being who is found through the sat, the true gurprasad, the true Guru’s grace.

Kabeer ji explains his ordeal and says
bhujaa baa(n)dhh bhilaa kar ddaariou
bhujaa means arms, baa(n)dhh, means to be tied up, they tied up my arms, bhilaa kar ddaariou, ddaariou, they threw me in front of the elephant.

hasathee krop moo(n)dd mehi maariou
in krop, in anger, the driver of the elephant, the one who is riding the elephant, in anger, he maariou, he struck the elephant, to move the elephant forward, on the moo(n)dd, on the head.

hasath bhaag kai cheesaa maarai
But, instead, the hasth, the elephant, bhaag kai, ran away, cheesaa maarai, cheesaa maarai means when the elephant trumpets, elephant makes a loud noise, running away, screaming.

eiaa moorath kai ho balihaarai
It is almost as if the elephant is saying, eiaa moorath kai ho balihaarai, I am a sacrifice to this moorath, to this image of God, balihaarai, means to be a sacrifice to. The idea was the elephant would trample down Kabeer ji, but instead, Kabeer will explain what happened.

aahi maerae t(h)aakur thumaraa jor
O my beloved t(h)aakur, O my Lord Master, thumaraa jor, thumaraa means yours, jor means strength, You are the one who gives me strength

kaajee bakibo hasathee thor
And Kabeer ji explains how the Kazis bakibo, bakibo means to shout, the Kazis, the religious teachers started shouting and screaming at the driver of the elephant to thor, to move on the hasthi, the elephant.

Kabeer ji says Pause and think about this point; at this point where everything looked so dark. Kabeer ji was thinking about God and taking inspiration and his strength from Akal Purakh.

rae mehaavath thujh ddaaro kaatt
The Kazi shouted out, rae mehaavath, mehaavath means the driver of the elephant, O mehaavath, O driver of the elephant, thujh ddaaro kaatt, I will ddaaro, I will get you and I will kaatt, I will throw you after cutting you into small pieces. So the religious teacher is showing just about how religious he is shouting at the driver saying, the Kazis and the Pandits are shouting at the driver and saying, we are going to cut you into bits.

eisehi thuraavahu ghaalahu saatt
eisehi thuraavahu, make this elephant thuraavahu, walk, ghaalahu saatt, hit him if you have to move him on.

hasath n thorai dhharai dhhiaan
hasath, the elephant does not move on, doesn’t matter what the drive does, dhharai dhhiaan, instead the elephant was blessed with this understanding that the humans around him did not have.

vaa kai ridhai basai bhagavaan
The elephant understood that in Kabeer ji’s ridhai, in Kabeer ji’s heart was bhagavaan, was the Lord.

kiaa aparaadhh sa(n)th hai keenhaa
It is almost as if it was comteplating these lines, kiaa aparaadhh sa(n)th hai keenhaa, what aparaadhh, what sin has this saint committed ? The reason why they wanted to kill Kabeer ji, was because Kabeer ji was denouncing caste, he was denouncing blind rituals and was instead spreading love for God. kiaa aparaadhh sa(n)th hai keenhaa, what sin can this saint have committed ? None.

baa(n)dhh pott ku(n)char ko dheenhaa
baa(n)dhh pott means to tie him up into a sack, you tied him up into a sack and ku(n)char ko dheenhaa, given him dheenhaa, thrown him in front of the elephant. Why?

ku(n)char pott lai lai namasakaarai
The ku(n)char, the elephant raises up the pott, raises up the sack Kabeer ji was in, lai lai namasakaarai, and bows to him again and again.

boojhee nehee kaajee a(n)dhhiaarai
But, the Kazis, the religiuos teachers, boojhee nahee, they couln’t understand this, why? Because they were a(n)dhhiaarai, because they were blind. Even the elephant could understand Kabeer ji’s greatness and Kabeer ji’s love.

theen baar patheeaa bhar leenaa
Three times, theen baar, patheeaa bhar leenaa, they tried to get this elephant to attack Kabeer ji.

man kat(h)or ajehoo n patheenaa
His mind was so kat(h)or, his mind was so full of anger, ajehoo n patheenaa, that even after seeing this elephant bow to Kabeer ji, his mind did not patheenaa, did not understand that Kabeer ji was a man of God.

kehi kabeer hamaraa gobi(n)dh
Kabeer ji says this is the nature of my Lord, my WaheGuru, my seed of the world, Gobind.

chouthhae padh mehi jan kee ji(n)dh
Chouthhae padh, means in the fourth state of meditation, mehi jan kee ji(n)dh, this is where the soul of the jan, of the servant is. The chouthhae padh is the state beyond pain and pleasure, beyond all worldly states. That is what is called the chouthhae padh in Gurmat. What Kabeer ji is saying is that no pain and pleasure can affect those who attain this level.

So, Kabeer ji is telling us this story today for some reason how WaheGuru ji saved and protected His beloved, justice is done throughout the times before, as we read in the Sodhar, Kirtan Chounki, Har jug jug Bhagat oopaaia, paij rakhda aaia raam raaje, jug jug, time and age after age Waheguru has saved and protected His beloved souls. Kabeer ji is saying

aahi maerae t(h)aakur thumaraa jor || kaajee bakibo hasathee thor
These are the words you should remember from this Hukamnama. Always thumaraa jor, always take strength from Akal Purakh. And, even we may not be facing physical elephant, but mentally there are many elephants, the elephant of anger, elephant of lust and desire, the elephant of greed, the elephant of attachment.

May we be blessed by WaheGuru, by Satguru ji that we manage like Kabeer ji to try, with Gruprasad, with Guru’s grace, over these things which afflict us.
