Sahib Siri Guru Nanak Maharaj talks through the Dhanaasree raag, the raag which takes away all anxiety. Guru Ji says, “ Ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad. There is one eternal creative, nourishing, and destroying being who is found through the grace of true Guru.
Gur saagar ratnee bharpooray. The Guru is an ocean. What is the ocean full of? Completely full of diamonds. What oceans are there? Amrit sant chugeh nahee dooray. Guru Sahibji is saying that within the ocean, the ocean is filled of immortal nectar, that ambrosial, immortal, highest of high, sweetest of sweet nectar of God’s name, of God’s name. The saints take sips from this nectar. They never stray away from this ocean. Har ras chog chugeh parabh bhaavai. They taste this essence of Waheguru, of Hari and by doing so they are loved by Prabhu, by Waheguru. Sarvar meh hans paraanpat paavai. Within this pool the swan like soul finds the lord of our breath, of our soul, of our life. Paraanpat means the Lord of breath, ultimately of the soul. Ki-aa bag bapurhaa chhaprhee naa-ay. What can the poor crane bird do? He bathes in the muddy pool. Indeed! Just like us. We bathe in the muddy pool of desire, of anger, of greed, of attachment, of hatred. Then what happens to that crane? Keecharh doobai mail na jaa-ay. That crane sinks into the mud of desire, of anger, of greed, of hate and the dirt doesn’t leave that crane.
Rahaa-o. Guruji says, “Pause and think about this.”
Rakh rakh charan dharay veechaaree. Guruji says, “Placing the feet upon the path the person thinks again, goes into thoughts but dubidhaa chhod bha-ay nirankaaree. Only when you give up your doubt, give up your pull in two directions, only when you become one then you become truly a follower of the formless one.” When you go above the illusion form, this altar illusion, this world then you can become one with the formless one. That person is mukat padaarath har ras chaakhay. That person is blessed with the treasure of liberation and also taste the Har ras, taste the essence of God. Aavan jaan rahay gur raakhay. That person is saved by the Guru from coming and going on to the earth. Sarvar hansaa chhod na jaa-ay. That swan like soul does not leave, does not forsake this pool of the Guru. Paraym bhagat kar sahj samaa-ay. Through devotion, through love that swan like soul merges into sahj. Sahj means that state of complete balance. Sarvar meh hans hans meh saagar. The swans are in the pool and the pool is within the swan. Akath kathaa gur bachnee aadar. They are blessed with the unspeakable speech, why? Because they have respect for the Guru’s word, for the every word that the Guru speaks.
Sunn mandal ik jogee baisay. There is one jogee, who? Waheguru. He is the supreme Yogi who sits in the state of complete focus, concentration forever and forever. Naar na purakh kahhu ko-oo kaisay. He is not female, He is not male. How can you describe Him to anyone? Taribhavan jot rahay liv laa-ee. Throughout the three worlds’, everywhere, all the three world are illuminated by His light. Sur nar naath sachay sarnaa-ee. The angels, all humans beings, all the yogic masters are in the protection of that true Waheguru. Aanand mool anaath adhaaree. Waheguru Ji is the root of all joy and bliss. He is support of people who have no other support.
Gurmukh bhagat sahj beechaaree. The devotional devotee focuses upon the Guru and comes to dwell in a state of intuitive balance. Bhagat vachhal bhai kaatanhaaray. That Waheguru is the liberator of His devotee. He is one who destroys, cuts through all fear. Ha-umai maar milay pag dhaaray. But only when you kill your ego and you put your feet on His path will you meet, only then will you merge in with that lord. Anik jatan kar kaal santaa-ay. We do many things to take our mind away from us dying but the idea of death still frightens us. But Guruji says, “ Maran likhaa-ay mandal meh aa-ay. That time when we are going to die is already written and then we come into the world.” Guru ji says, “Don’t worry about death because death is going to come. Worry about life! Worry about where your life is going. You don’t know how you are going to die.”
Janam padaarath dubidhaa khovai. In doubt the human being wastes this gift of human life. Aap na cheenas bharam bharam rovai. He doesn’t find out what the true self is and then what happens? Then wondering and deluded in doubt he cries. Kahta-o parh-ta-o sunta-o ayk. Speak about, read about, and listen to ik oang kaar. Dheeraj dharam dharneedhar tayk. As your support, that true Waheguru, that support of everyone, if you have Waheguru as your support you will be blessed with courage in all situations and truth and righteousness. Jat sat sanjam ridai samaa-ay. In that person’s heart he is blessed with chastity, purity, truth, restraint. Cha-uthay pad ka-o jay man patee-aa-ay. With Guru’s grace His mind enters into the fourth state of being, into the highest state.
Saachay nirmal mail na laagai. Those people who attach themselves to the truth, they become pure and dirt of the world doesn’t attach to them. Gur kai sabad bharam bha-o bhaagai. Through the Guru’s shabad doubt and fear are destroyed. Soorat moorat aad anoop. The form of Waheguru, the personality, the characteristics of Waheguru are not created and are not destroyed. He is not born and He is never to die. He is so beautiful, beyond all description. Naanak jaachai saach saroop. Nanak begs for darshan of that true embodiment, of Satnam, of Waheguru, of that Prabhu, of that Hari.
May Guru Sahib ji bless us on this day that we may be able to take something away from the Gursaagar. That we are like the swans and not like the cranes.
Ki-aa bag bapurhaa chhaprhee naa-ay. Keecharh doobai mail na jaa-ay. Rahaa-o.
Jaikaree Gazawe!
Nihaal Ho Jawe!
Sat Siri Akal! Gur Bar Akal!
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
