Sheikh Farid Ji speaks to us today in Aasaa Raag, in the Raag which carries the hope for connection with Akaal Purakh, for being united with Akaal Purakh. Farid Ji says:
bolai saykh fareed pi-aaray alah lagay
Sheikh Farid says, O my piaaray- beloved friend, attach yourself lagay to alah - to Waheguru, Ram, to Allah. Why?
ih tan hosee khaak nimaanee gor gharay
This body which you love so much, will turn to dust. And what will happen? Its home - gharay will be nimanee gor - a lowly grave. Farid Ji is saying your true house is a graveyard. He is saying you may spend 20 years, 30 years, 50 years, 60 years in your house in the city, in the town or wherever you live, but the rest of your years will be spent in the graveyard. Farid Ji is saying wake up and attach yourself to Waheguru, Akaal Purakh who is eternal.
aaj milaavaa saykh fareed taakim koonjarhee-aa manhu machind-rhee-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o
Sheikh FaridJi says you have the opportunity to be united - milaavaa with the Akaal Purah today, but, what do you have to do? You have to taakim- control koonjarheeaa - your bird like lust, your bird like thoughts, you have to take control of them. Because they are the ones who machind-rhee-aa - mess up your mind. The ones that excite your mind for bad deeds, you have to take control over them. That is what Farid Ji is saying. Just as Guru Nanak says in Japji Sahib man jeetay jag jeet if you conquer those bird like desires, why they are bird like? Because they flutter around all the time in our mind. Farid Ji says you will be united with your Akaal Purakh, Waheguru. Farid Ji says rehao, pause and think about this.
jay jaanaa mar jaa-ee-ai ghum na aa-ee-ai
Farid Ji says if I had known jay jaanaa, that I was going to die,
jhoothee dunee-aa lag na aap vanjaa-ee-ai.
Then Farid Ji says I would not have, lag na, attached myself to this jhootee duniya - false world. I would not have sold myself out, I would not have ruined myself. vanjaaeeai means literally to ruin yourself. Shaikh Fard Ji is saying to us don’t sell yourself out to the world, you will not get this chance again and again as Guru Arjan Dev ji says in Rahraas, bhayee prapat manukh dey huriya gobind milan kee eh teri bariyaa- This is our chance, Farid Ji says to us.
bolee-ai sach Dharam jhooth na bolee-ai jo gur dasai vaat mureedaa jolee-ai.
Farid Ji says only speak the truth, boleeai sach, follow righteousness, dharma, do not speak lies, do not speak falsehood, jhoot na boleeai. Whatever the Guru tells you, jo gur dasai, vaat-the route, whatever path the Guru tells you. If the Guru tells you then you must. If you want to play the game of love, you must cut off your head. jau tau prem khekan kaa chaao sir dhar talee galee meri aaooAs Guru Nanak Dev Ji says in Salok Vaaraan te Vadheek. Then you must do that. mureedaa joleeai The disciple must follow everything the Guru does, everything Guru says. Which ever path Guru Ji wants us to follow we must walk on that.
chhail langhanday paar goree man Dheeri-aa kanchan vannay paasay kalvat cheeri-aa.
Seeing the chhail, here he is talking about the Gurmukhs who have pleased the Lord, the Waheguru. Those great saints langhandhey paar - who have crossed the ocean of the world victoriously, goree man dheeriaa - goree means young soul bride, man means mind and dheeriaa means encouraged, to gain some support. Farid Ji says look at those great saints, who have crossed this world ocean, look at Bhai Mani Singh, look at Baba Deep Singh, look at Bhai Taru Singh, look at Baba Bhinod Singh, look at Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji Bhindera waaley, look at Baba Sahib Singh Ji KalaTaree, look at all the other Gurmukhs who have crossed this ocean and gain support from them. The soul bride is supported by seeing all these great Gurmukhs. Cross across, maybe one day we will be blessed with that grace as well. But then Farid Ji says those paasey, who take the side, who collect together, kanchan - gold, kalvat - sword, cheeriaa - will be cut down with a sword. What does this mean? It means that those people who love the falsehood of this world they will be cut down by those falsehoods.
saykh haiyaatee jag na ko-ee thir rahi-aa jis aasan ham baithay kaytay bais ga-i-aa
Sheikh Ji says no one has remained on this world thir- forever. Sheikh Farid Ji says that jis aasan hum bhaithey the seat where I am sitiing now, I don’t know how many have sat and left. The seat that I am sitting on now, God only knows how many have sat upon that seat and left.
katik koonjaan chayt da-o saavan bijulee-aan see-aalay sohandee-aan pir gal baahrhee-aan
Like in the month of Katik, the koonjaan - the swallows appear, and in the month of Chayt the dao - brushfires happen, in the month of Saavan, bijuleeaan there is lightening, in the winter -seeaalay they sohandeeaan - adorn the pir gal baahrheeaan - husband’s neck with the arms of the brides. Sheikh Farid Ji says just as all these things are due to happen, swallows in Katik, brushfires in Chayt, in the months of monsoons there is bound to be lightening, and in the winter months the brides adorn their husbands. Farid Ji says just like all these things:
>chalay chalanhaar vichaaraa lay-ay mano gandhaydi-aan chhi-a maah turhandi-aa hik khino
chalanhaar- this transitory body will leave, chalay one day. Farid Ji says think about this -vichaaraa mano in your mind. Just as those things will happen which I mentioned before so will your physical body return to dust. Farid Ji says that ghandhaydiaan - to put together this body, to create, to form this physical body it takes more than six months - chhia maah in the mother’s womb, turhandiaa- to break this body, to die, it takes hik khino one instant, one second.
jimee puchhai asmaan fareedaa khayvat kinn ga-ay jaalan goraan naal ulaamay jee-a sahay
jimee - earth puchhai asks the asmaan sky, khayvat the boatman, kinn gay where have they gone? Farid Ji says the earth asks the sky where have all the boatman gone? Boatman here means the great men on this earth, where have they all gone? Earth is asking the sky because the sky is looking down. What a beautiful image Farid Ji draws here. jaalan goraan naal ulaamay jee-a sahay And the sky says back to the earth, O my friend, some have been jaalan - burnt, some have been put into goraan - graves; ulaamay - punishments, jee-souls; their souls are suffering the punishments of bad things they have done in this life. All those leaders, prime ministers, presidents, kings and the emperors, they all have been reduced to the dust and their souls have to carry the burden of what they have done. Just as in Dasam Granth Sahib Guru Cobind Singh Ji says ek shayv bhayeh aik phair bhayeh raam chander kishen kay avatar bhi anaeak hai One Shiv is created, one Shiv is destroyed, one is again created and one is again destroyed, and there are thousands of avatars, incarnations of Raam Chander and Krishana. In the same way Farid Ji is saying that all those leaders have been reduced to dust. And Farid Ji is saying to us you will be reduced to dust as well, the only thing which will remain forever is your soul, is your connection with Akaal Purakh, God.
Farid Ji is saying pi-aaray alah lagay O my beloved, I beseech you, I ask you lovingly to attach yourself to God, whilst you have the time, whilst you have the breath within your lungs. Take the step to righteousness. bolee-ai sach Dharam jhooth na bolee-ai jo gur dasai vaat mureedaa jolee-ai Take those steps now, whilst you are breathing, whilst you are walking, whilst you have it in your hands, whilst you have that second in your hand. Farid Ji says if you don’t you will regret it forever. Do not be lazy when it comes to doing good things, do them straight away because you never know, Farid Ji is saying when death is going to come and attack you. gandhaydi-aan chhi-a maah turhandi-aa hik khino For this body to break it only takes an instant.
May Farid Ji bless us today. On this day we are blessed with this understanding that this body is transitory and with Sheikh Farid Ji’s grace and with the grace of Satguru Nanak Dev Ji we are blessed to attach ourselves, to be attach to the grace of gurprasad, to Waheguru, Allah, to Raam.
jimee puchhai asmaan fareedaa khayvat kinn ga-ay.
jaalan goraaN naal ulaamay jee-a sahay.
