Guru Amardas ji Maharaj speaks to us in the Sorath Raag

houmai jalathae jal mueae bhram aaeae dhoojai bhaae
Burning, jalanaa, to burn; Guru ji says what are people burning with? Is it a physical fire, Guru ji says ‘no’; it is the fire of houmai, of ego; the fire of ego burns us from inside, mueae, and it kills us spiritually; bhram aaeae dhoojai bhaae, it leads the human being to bhram, wander around in doubt, illusion, dhoojai bhaae, in the love, the attachment to this dhooja bhaa, this illusion of Maya around us.

poorai sathigur raakh leeeae aapanai pa(n)nai paae
But, if the poora satguru, the True, Perfect Satguru raakh leeae, saves the human, saves the jigyasu, then what happens? How does the Guru save them? aapanai pa(n)nai paae, the Guru, aapanai means his own, pa(n)nai paae means to make – satguru ji makes that person his own. Like when Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj said to the Khalsa Panth, “iin putran ke sees par var deeai suth char, char mooai tho kya hua, eaihh jeevath kaiee hazar”, these are my sons, these are my daughters, this Khalsa Panth. The Guru saves us by making us his own.

eihu jag jalathaa nadharee aaeiaa gur kai sabadh subhaae
Guru ji says this jag, world is burning, is jalatha, nadharee aaeiaa, how do we see it? How does it come to be seen? gur kai sabadh subhaae, through the subhaae, through meditating upon the shabad, the Guru’s shabad, we realize this world is burning. Otherwise we don’t even know that we are burning. Guru ji says how ignorant are we? How ignorant is the world, it is burning and it does not even know. Only when the Guru does kirpa, do you realize that you are burning with lust, only when the Guru does kirpa, do you realize that you are burning with ego, only when the Guru does kirpa, do you realize that you are burning with greed, only when the Guru blesses us you realize you are burning with attachment and anger.

sabadh rathae sae seethal bheae naanak sach kamaae
Those who have colored themselves, rathae, who are completely imbued, completely colored in the shabad, in the Guru’s words, sae, those people, seethal bheae, become seethal, become cool inside, their fire is put out and they are completely… all their thirsts are quenched; naanak, Guru Amardas ji says, sach kamaae, those people live the Truth, kamaae, means to live, to carry out, they live Truth, they do not just speak about the Truth, they live the Truth, they make the Truth their life, by meditating upon Satnam Siri Waheguru.

safaliou sathigur saeviaa dhha(n)n janam paravaan
Guru ji says, those people who have saeviaa, have served the satguru, the True Guru, their sewa, their service is safaliou, is blessed, it is rewarding, it will bless them in the end; dhha(n)n janam paravaan, dhha(n)n, blessed is their janam, is their birth, because it is paravaan, it is accepted, because they have come on this earth and they have done what they are meant to do on this earth; bhaee parapath manukh deoreeaa, gobind milan ke eihh theree bareeia, it says in Rehras Sahib, Guru Arjan Dev ji says to us everyday. This is our bareeia, this is our chance, so Guru ji says blessed are those people who recognize this chance.

inaa sathigur jeevadhiaa mueiaa n visarai saeee purakh sujaan
Those people jeevandhiaan, whilst alive and whilst dead, mueiaan, n visarai, do not forget who? the satguru, the True Guru, saeee purakh sujaan, are truly sujaan, truly wise; those people are truly blessed with spiritual intellect, spiritual intellect.

kul oudhhaarae aapanaa so jan hovai paravaan
That jan, that sewadar, that humble servant of the Guru, kul oudhhaarae, kul means family, oudhhaarae means to save, he or she not only saves himself, but also saves their whole family, aapanaa, all of their family, so jan hovai paravaan, jan, that humble being, is paravaan is approved by Waheguru.

guramukh mueae jeevadhae paravaan hehi manamukh janam maraahi
The Gurumukhs, their death is approved by Waheguru, their death is blessed, their life is blessed, it is paravaan; hehi manamukh janam maraahi, those who follow their man, their mind, janam maraahi, they are born, they die, they are born, they die, they are in this cycle of re-incarnation.

naanak mueae n aakheeahi j gur kai sabadh samaahi
O Nanak, don’t say that those people are dead, mueae n aakheeahi, don’t say that those Gurumukhs have died, j gur kai sabadh samaahi, if they have samaahi, if they have merged completely in the Guru’s shabad, they will live forever. Those people who have meditated upon the Guru, they live forever. Baba Budha ji lives forever, Bhai Mani Singh lives forever, Bhai Taru Singh lives forever, Bhai Manj lives forever, they are not dead and they can never die.

har purakh nira(n)jan saev har naam dhhiaaeeai
Guru Amar Das ji says saev, do sewa of Guru, har purakh, that One Lord, that One Purakh, nira(n)jan, who is above all Maya, who is beyond all of this dirt of the world; saev Him, how? har naam dhhiaaeeai, by dhhiaaeeai, by meditating upon the Hari Naam, by meditating upon His Naam, His Blessed Name.

sathasa(n)gath saadhhoo lag har naam samaaeeai
lag, attach yourself to the saadhhoo, to the saints and to the Sadh Sangat, the society of Truth; to those who speak the Truth and live the Truth, then what will happen? har naam samaaeeai, you will be absorbed into the Hari Naam, into the Name of Waheguru.

har thaeree vaddee kaar mai moorakh laaeeai
O Waheguru, Your kaar, Your sewa, Your service is so great, vaddee, is beyond anything else, is greatest; mai moorakh laaeeai, please attach me into Your service, I am a moorakh, I am a foolish, please attach me into Your sewa.

ho golaa laalaa thudhh mai hukam furamaaeeai
Waheguru, I am Your golaa, I am Your laalaa, I am Your slave, thudhh, of Yours, mai hukam furamaaeeai, please command me, furamaaeeai, command me however You want and give me Your Hukam, give me Your commands, so that I may live by them Waheguru and give me the strength to live by them.

ho guramukh kaar kamaavaa j gur samajhaaeeai
O Waheguru ji, if You want to bless me, bless me that I may kaar kamaavaan, that I may serve the Gurumukhs, and one day I may be blessed and follow you as a Gurumukh, with my mukh, with my face towards the Guru; j gur samajhaaeeai, if only the Guru does kirpa, blesses me, samajhaaeeai, blesses me with His understanding.

So in today’s Shabad, Guru Amar Das ji is saying to us do not burn in the houmai, instead follow the feet of the satguru, ask for His blessings, that He may bless you with sewa, He may bless you with Naam and that He may bless you with His Eternal Love.
