Guru Piaree Saadh Sangatjio the shabad today that Guru Sahibji has blessed us with is the mukhvaak from Aasaa Di Vaar, that Aasa Di Vaar which fulfills all hopes and desires. Guru Nanak Patshahji is blessing us with this shabad today. This shabad comes from a time when Guru Nanak Patshahji was visiting Delhi. As Guru Nanak Patshah was visiting Delhi that day there was a man within Delhi, in the city, who had invited the Brahmins, the Hindu priests, to come to his house, to come and eat, so that he could serve them the next day because his wife was pregnant, she was expecting and he wanted to serve holy people. In his eyes the Brahmins, the Hindu priests were holy.

But what happened the night before Brahmins were going to go to his house was that his wife gave birth to a child. When the Brahmins came to find out about this they said, “Now his house is polluted, we cannot eat there. We cannot go to this man’s house because it has been polluted by the birth of a child.” That pollution, that impurity is called sootak. “Now that house has become the house which is defiled by sootak.” Listening to this the man was very upset. He had prepared all the food, everything was ready, all the mats were laid out on the floor, everything was ready for the Brahmins to come and eat and share the food. Hearing that the Brahmins were turning down his humble request the man was very upset. By the grace of God he was friends with the Sikh of Guru Nanak. When he talked to this Sikh of Guru Nanak, the Sikh said, “Why are you worried, Oh brother? Guru Nanak Patshah will come with their sangat and they will share the food at your house because they are beyond these meaningless rituals.” So the man went with his Sikh friend and asked Guru Nanak Devji and Guru Nanak Devji said, “Of course I will come to your house!”

When the Brahmins found out that Guru Nanak Devji was going to eat at that man’s house they got together and they came to ask Guru Nanak, “Why are you polluting yourself and all your Sikhs?” Guru Nanak Devji said this Shabad to them.

“Jae kar soothak ma(n)neeai sabh thai soothak hoe.” Guru Nanak Patshahji says, “If we begin believing in this idea of sootak; that when something is born there is impurity, if we accept that then in all places there is sootak. Everyplace becomes impure. Which place is that where nothing new is being born, where nothing new is being created, where no new animals has not being born? Which place is that on this earth? Guru Nanak Devji says, “Gohae athai lakarree a(n)dhar keerraa hoe.” The food was and still is cooked by burning cow dung or wood. In the cow dung and the wood that you make your food with, Oh Brahmins, there are worms, animals, insects inside that. Then Guruji continues, “Jaethae dhaanae a(n)n kae jeeaa baajh n koe.” As many grains there are of corn, none of them are without any life forms. What Guru Nanak Patshahji is saying is that the roti that you eat, the bread that you eat is made from grains of corn but each of those grains has thousands, millions of life forms living on them, being born, dying on them.

Then Guru Nanak says, “Pehilaa paanee jeeo hai jith hariaa sabh koe.” First, water has many life forms in it and has life in it self and it brings life to everything else. Soothak kio kar rakheeai soothak pavai rasoe. How can we be saved from sootak, from impurity when impurity is taking place in your own kitchen? How many animals, how many ants are there that are born and die in your kitchen? Naanak soothak eaev n outharai giaan outhaarae dhhoe. Oh Nanak this is not the way of removing the sootak, the impurity, then what is the way of removing it? Giaan outharrae dhhoe, with spiritual knowledge you can take the impurity and wash it away.

Mehalaa Pehla.

Guru Nanak Devji says, “There is even a greater impurity.” What is that? Man kaa soothak lobh hai jihavaa soothak koorr. The impurity of the mind is greed. Greed is the true impurity. Impurity of the tongue is speaking falsehood. Akhee soothak vaekhanaa par thria par dhhan roop. Impurity for the eyes is to look, is to want, is to hunger for another person’s wife, another person’s money, another person’s wealth, another person’s beauty. To lust after that that is the true impurity. Ka(n)nee soothak ka(n)n pai laaeithabaaree khaahi. The impurity of the ears is to listen to the slander of others. Listening to slander of other is impurifying your ears, is filling your ears with dirt. Naanak ha(n)saa aadhamee badhhae jam pur jaahi. Hansaa has two meanings. It means the soul, swan soul. The soul of human being is tied up to the city of death. Also hansaa means violin. Committing all of these crimes, being so impure the man’s soul goes to the city of death.

Mehalaa Pehla.

Sabho soothak bharam hai dhoojai lagai jaae. Guru Nanak Patshahji says, “All this idea of impurity is just a mindless ritual.” Where does this mindless ritual come from? It comes from the idea of duality. This outwardly impurity which can attach to you from outside, Guru Nanak says, “That is all fiction. The true impurity is the inner impurity.” Ja(n)man maranaa hukam hai bhaanai aavai jaae. Oh Brahmins being born and dying is hukam, is the will of God we come and go. Khaanaa peenaa pavithra hai dhithon rijak sa(n)baahi. To eat and to drink is blessed because Waheguruji gives us this nourishment, this food, this blessing to all of us. Naanak jinhee guramukh bujhiaa thinhaa soothak naahi. Oh Nanak those followers of the Guru who have understood this they are never attached to impurity, they are never touched by the impureness.

Pourree

Sathigur vaddaa kar saalaaheeai jis vich vaddeeaa vaddiaaeeaa. Praise the true Guru because He is great. Within that great Master there are great virtues. All virtues come from God. Sehi maelae thaa nadharee aaeeaa. Only when God unites us with the Guru then we begin to see them, they start to come to our vision. At the moment we are like a frog stuck in the well. We don’t know that an ocean exists. Only when we are pulled out of that well do we see that an ocean exists. Jaa this bhaanaa thaa man vasaaeeaa. When it pleases Waheguru, when it’s His command then He comes to dwell within our mind. Kar hukam masathak hath dhar vichahu maar kateeaa buriaaeeaa. The Guru through the hukam of Waheguru, through the command of Waheguru puts upon our forehead He places His hand and He beats all of the wickedness and evil from within us. Sehi thuthai no nidh paaeeaa. When our Lord is pleased with us we are blessed with the nine treasures.

So Guru Pyaree Sadh Sangatji the hukamnama today was at one point said to those pandits in Delhi but it applies to us now. Let us focus on purifying the soul. Let us not fall into mindless ritual. But let us also understand our Guru’s hukam. Guruji is saying, “Purify your mind, love the world and worship Akal Purakh through the Satguru.”

Kar hukam masathak hath dhar vichahu maar kateeaa buriaaeeaa. Sehi thuthai no nidh paaeeaa
