Guru Arjan Dev ji is talking to us in the raag in which all our worries fall away. And in this Divine state of relaxation Guruji says,
jh karanee hovehi sarami(n)dhaa eihaa kamaanee reeth
By doing such a thing that will bring you to shame, jh karanee. Jh karanee means a habit. Waheguru ji is saying to us: We have got into the habit of doing those things which bring shame upon us. We do such things that hurt others, which hurt ourselves, really.
sa(n)th kee ni(n)dhaa saakath kee poojaa aisee dhrirrhee bipareeth
Under the saints, saakath kee poojaa. Poojaa means to worship. Saakath means the one who has no concept of love for God. We worship those people, we idolize those people, who take us in the direction away from God. Yet we fail the saints. We slander those people who are taking us to God. aisee dhrirrhee bipareeth. Dhrirrhe means to plant inside ourselves. Bipareeth means corrupt ways. We have planted within side ourselves the seeds of such corruption.
Guruji says to us, trying to wake us up, maaeiaa moh bhoolo avarai heeth. Maaeiaa moh. You attach to this maya. Moh means attachment. Maya means illusion. The illusion of this world is what we are attached to. Bhoolo avarai heeth. Bhoolo we are lost; avarai heeth in the love of all these material things around us.
haricha(n)dhouree ban har paath rae eihai thuhaaro beeth rehaao
haricha(n)dhouree ban har paath rae. haricha(n)dhouree means enchanted city. ban har means the green leaves of the forest. Such is the way of your life. What Maharaj is saying is that your life is as fragile as the green leaves of the forest. Any time when the wind blows past, your mind goes into doubt and confusion. The city of haricha(n)dhouree really doesn’t exit. We are living in falsehood. That is what Waheguruji is saying to us. Wake up! We are living in falsehood. Realize the truth.
Rehaoo. Pause and think about this.
cha(n)dhan laep hoth dhaeh ko sukh garadhhabh bhasam sa(n)geeth ||
The body of the donkey can be bathed in sandalwood oil, the equivalent of being showered and soaped. The nicest soap can be used. The nicest oils can be put on the donkey, the nicest perfumes. ko sukh garadhhabh bhasam sa(n)geeth. The donkey loves, what does the donkey love to do? bhasam means mud, to roll around in the mud. That is what we do. Our soul is anointed with the love of God. Our soul is part of that complete life, but we like to drag that soul into the dirt. In to the dirt of falsehood, into the dirt of illusion, into the dirt of lies, Into the dirt of false action.
a(n)mrith sa(n)g naahi ruch aavath bikhai t(h)agouree preeth
a(n)mirth means nectar. Naahi ruch aavath means to not be interested in. We are not interested in the immortal nectar of God’s name. bikhai t(h)agouree preeth means Bikhai means poison. T(h0agouree means deception. Preeth means love. We love the poisonous drug of deception.
outham sa(n)th bhalae sa(n)jogee eis jug mehi pavith puneeth
The saints, they are great. They are outham. They are the highest of the higest. Sa(n)jogee. They are blessed with great fortune. Eis jug mehi pavith. In this world, the holy saints, the ones who focus on God, are the only ones who are puneeth, who are pure. Puneeth means holy. Those people are the only ones who are blessed. The Saints, the ones who meditate on God.
jaath akaarathh janam padhaarathh kaach baadharai jeeth
jaath akaarathh janam padhaarathh, the jewel of this human life, akaarathh. Akaarathh means passing away uselessly. This human life which is such a beautiful gift is passing away day by day. Kaarch baadharai jeeth. What are we exchanging this diamond of a human life for? Kaach, glass. Waheguru is saying to us; Why are you collecting together things of no value and wasting your beautiful breath, your beautiful body, your beautiful soul, your beautiful mind, this human life, without focusing on God?
janam janam kae kilavikh dhukh bhaagae gur giaan a(n)jan naethr dheeth
janam janam kae kilavikh dhukh bhaagae. Bhaagae means to run away. The sins of countless incarnations, the janam janam and dhukh, pain, bhaagae run away, are destroyed. When? When the Guru puts the spiritual ointment of knowledge into your naethr, into your eyes.
saadhhasa(n)g ein dhukh thae nikasiou naanak eaek pareeth
saadhhasa(n)g ein dhukh thae nikasiou. Saadhhasa(n)g in the company of the holy ones, ein dhukh tahe nikasiou. Nikasiou means escape. I escape from these pains. Why? Waheguru is saying, Do you want to escape from kaam, krod, lodh, moh, ahankar? Do you want to escape from these? Then go into the company of the holy, the holy congregation. naanak eaek pareeth Naanak is in love with eaek, the One God, Ek Oaankar. Guruji is saying to us: Don’t waste this life. Don’t waste this life. Focus upon God. Don’t let this beautiful body, mind and soul you have been given go to waste. Don’t be the donkey which is anointed with sandalwood but rolls in the mud. Join the saints and win your soul.
maaeiaa moh bhoolo avarai heeth.
haricha(n)dhouree ban har paath rae eihai thuhaaro beeth rehaao
