The hukamnama today is Guru Amardasji Maharaj, in Bihaagraa Raag, on Ang 550, of Siri Guru Granth Sahibji Maharaj!

How rare is the dervish, the Saintly renunciate, who understands renunciation.

jae ghar ghar hantai mangadhaa dhig jeevan dhig vaes |

Cursed is the life, and cursed are the clothes, of one who wanders around, begging from door to door.

But, if he abandons hope and anxiety, and as Gurmukh receives the Name as his charity,

O Nanak, the tree has one fruit, but two birds are perched upon it.

They are not seen coming or going; these birds have no wings.

One enjoys so many pleasures, while the other, through the Word of the Shabad, remains in Nirvaanaa.

He Himself is the field, and He Himself is the farmer. He Himself grows and grinds the corn.

He Himself cooks it, He Himself puts the food in the dishes, and He Himself sits down to eat.

He Himself is the water, He Himself gives the tooth-pick, and He Himself offers the mouthwash.

aapae sangath sadh behaalai aapae vidhaa karaavai |

He Himself calls and seats the congregation, and He Himself bids them goodbye.

jis no kirapaal hovai har aapae this no hukam manaavai |6|

One whom the Lord Himself blesses with His Mercy – the Lord causes him to walk according to His Will. ||6||

Guru Sahib Ji speaks in Bihagra Raag. The Bihagra Raag is a Raag in which there is an extreme pain in the soul. The soul is in extreme pain and is looking for a way to find eternal peace. And in this search for peace, Guru Amar Das ji says darvaysee ko jaansee virlaa ko darvays. Darvays means a holy man, a renouncer. Guru Sahib Ji says a person – ko jaansee – who understands Darvays, who understands the art of being completely unattached from the world – is Virla is rare, ko darvays. There are only very few people on this earth Guru Sahib Ji says who truly understand what it means to be Darvays, what it means to be a saint, what it means to be completely absorbed in God. Guru Ji says jay ghar ghar handhai mangdaa Dhig jeevan Dhig vays. If the renonucer says ghar ghar handhai mangdaa; ghar ghar means from door to door ; mangda means begging for food. Guru ji says renoncer’s life is Dhig – a curse, the clothes, the robes he wears are cursed as well. What Guru Amar Das Ji is saying is that being a renouncer is not about wandering from house to house begging for alms, being a renouncer is about renouncing your attachments, your desires, your ego, your lust, your greed your hatred. Giving up your clothes, giving up living in your house is not really a true renounciation.

jay aasaa andaysaa taj rahai gurmukh bhikhi-aa naa-o Then Guru Ji talks about what is a eternal renouncer. aasaa andaysaa taj rahai – what do you have to give up? What do you have to give up your house? No; you have to give up your family? No ; You have to give up your clothes – No; You have to give up Taj- give up your Asaa –your hopes and desires; Andesaa – your anxieties.Give up your hopes and anxieties. And what Bhikhiya do you receive? What alms you beg for? gurmukh bhikhi-aa naa-o – The alms that a Gurmukh follow of Guru, begs for is Nao-o – Name of Waheguru. That is a true renouncer. Then Guru Ji says tis kay charan pakhaalee-ah – naanak ha-o balihaarai jaa-o. What does Nanak do – Nanak then charan pakhaliyee-ah – washes the charan, the feet of such a renouncer.. Ha-o Balihaarai jaa-o – and is a sacrifice to that renouncer who has given up hopes, desires and fears, and anxieties and has absorbed him or herself into the begging of the alms of charity, of the Naam of Waheguru.

Mehla 3.

This Shabad can be understood in many ways. One understanding can be nanak tarvar ek . O Nanak this world is a tree –there are two fruits that hang from the tree and there are two birds that come on that tree. And what it means is that this world is a tree and the pain and happiness are two fruits which hang from this tree and there are two parts of the soul, Guru Ji is talking about, which are the two birds. Then Guru Ji further goes on explaining aavat jaat na deeshee naa par pankhee taahi. – Guru Ji says these are not birds that have wings, You cannot see these birds coming and going. What are these birds? The birds are two parts of the soul. Just as the soul leaves the body nobody can see the soul leaving the body. Just as the soul enters a body no one has seen it either. Then Guru Ji goes on further explaining baho rangee ras bhogi-aa sabad rahai nirbaan – What part of the soul enjoys all these pleasures, all these colors of the world? But then what the other part of there are two parts of the soul; one part is begging for the Naam. In the last line of this Mehla, Guru Ji says har ras fal raatay naankaa karam sachaa neesaan. That soul who is that me fal raatey –, who is embued and has the symbol of God’s Grace shining upon him. Karam – in this case means Grace; that soul has God’s grace which enjoys fruit of God’s name.

In the last part of the Shabad Guru Ji says aapay Dhartee aapay hai raahak aap jammaa-ay peesaavai Waheguru himself is the field, Waheguru is the father- raahak; Waheguru himself is the grower of the corn and He himself grinds the corn into flour. aap pakaavai aap bhaaNday day-ay parosai aapay hee bahi khaavai. He, Waheguru cooks the corn himself and then puts out the dishes himself – lays them out on the table. Then Waheguru himself sits down to eat. Aapay jal– Waheguru himself is water; aapay day chhingaa – Waheguru himself gives the toothpick; chhingaa is a type of toothpick which is used in Punjab. Waheguru himself fills up the water for people to do the chuli – wash up their mouths after eating, aapay sangat sad bahaalai- Waheguru himself calls the sangat to sit down; aapay vidaa karaavai – Waheguru himself bids them goodbye.

What does Guru Ji says in the end jis no kirpaal hovai har aapay tis no hukam manaavai. Upon that person who Waheguru ji himself blesses with His Mercy, that person walks according to the will of Waheguru. So Guru Ji has covered vast range of topics in today’s Hukamnama, starting with the renunciation, then going onto the soul-bird which is inside all of us, the two halves. In the end, Guru Ji talks about Waheguru ‘s will. He has blessed with the understanding that only those people who are blessed with Guru’s Grace walk on the path of Waheguru’s will.
