That mortal, with whom the Lord is pleased, repeats the Glorious Praises of the Lord; he alone is a devotee, and he alone is approved.

He is the True Guru – service to the True Guru is fruitful and rewarding. By this service, the greatest treasure is obtained.

The faithless cynics in their love of duality and sensual desires, harbor foul-smelling urges. They are totally useless and ignorant. ||2||

One who has faith – his singing is approved. He is honored in the Court of the Lord.

Those who lack faith may close their eyes, hypocritically pretending and faking devotion, but their false pretenses shall soon wear off. ||3||

Why are there no spaces in Gurmukhi version of the above Hukamnama?
The hukamnamma today is in the raag soohee, and is by Guru Ram Das Ji. Raag Soohee is completely dyed in the dye of the Lord’s love, it is a raag totally enveloped in love, in prem. Guru Ram Das Ji is talking to us, and he is saying:
"Jis no har suparsan ho-ay so har gunaa ravai so bhagat so parvaan."
"Suparsan" means to be pleased with. "Jis no" upon whom, "har" the nourisher. Upon whom the nourisher of the world is pleased, upon whom the Lord God showers his mercy…"So har gunaa ravai." "Gunaa" means the praises of. "Ravai" means to be repeating, to be singing. That person sings, that person repeats, that person is enraptured by the grace of the Lord. That person, the one who believes, that true "bhagat"… "Bhagat" means that being who is truly devoted, completely imbued in love. We all say we are devoted to this, we are devoted to that. But true devotion is found in the Lord’s love. "So parvan" That person is approved in the Lord’s court. That person’s life is satisfied. That person’s life has gone with meaning.
"Tis kee mahimaa ki-aa varnee-ai jis kai hirdai vasi-aa har purakh bhagvaan. ||1||"
"Mahimaa" means the glory, the praises, the virtues. The praises of that person, "ki-aa varnee-ai". "Ki-aa" means how and "varnee-ai" means to be described. Guruji is saying how can I describe the virtues of that person, how can I describe how glorious, how beautous that person is? Within whose heart ("jis kai"), "vasi-aa" abides, dwells, "har purakh bhagvaan." "Har" means the Lord. "Purakh" means the primal creator. "Bhagvaan" again refers to the Lord. How can the glory of that person be described, in whose heart the love of the Lord abides? Now we say God is everywhere. But the thing is is that those people, who realise God is within them, who realise God dwells within themselves, they are truly glorious.
"Govind gun gaa-ee-ai jee-o laa-ay satguroo naal Dhi-aan. ||1|| rahaa-o."
Oh my soul, oh my jee-o. "Govind gun gaa-ee-ai". "Vind" means seed, "go" means universe. "Govind" the seed of the universe. Oh my soul, oh my jee-o, sing the praises of the Lord, the seed of the Universe. And how do you sing the praises? "Laa-ay" means to join, "satguroo" means the True Guru, "naal" means with. "Dhi-aan" is a very deep word that can’t be explained fully in English. The best way to describe it is as complete meditative concentration. Guru Ram Das Ji says, sing the praises of God by focusing on the shabad, the word of God. "Rahaa-o." Pause and think about this.
"So satguroo saa sayvaa satgur kee safal hai jis tay paa-ee-ai param niDhaan."
Guruji says that person ("so") alone is the true guru "satguroo". "Saa" means that, "sayvaa" means selfless service, "satgur kee" of the true guru’s, "safal hai" means to be fruitful. That person alone is the true Guru, and that service alone is fruitful to the true guru by which ("jis tay") you receive "param nidhaan". "Param" means highest and "nidhaan" means treasure. That person alone is the Guru who can give you the highest treasure. That selfless service alone is fruitful by which you receive the highest treasure. And what is that highest treasure? That highest treasure is liberation, "mukhti".
"Jo doojai bhaa-ay saakat kaamnaa arath durganDh sarayvday so nihfal sabh agi-aan. ||2||"
Those people "jo", "doojai" means in duality, in two minds. Those people who are in love with duality, whose minds are dual, are not focused. "Saakat" means the ones who are faithless. Those faithless people only look for "kaamnaa", their desires. They only look at their own desires. They don’t follow their Guru, they follow the desires that come into their minds. "Arath" means material desires, and literally means ‘meaning’. They only look out for what has meaning to them, what material things have meaning to them. And "durgandh". "Durgandh" actually means something that has a foul smell. Those people who are attached to the foul stench of evil, their lives are totally fruitless. ("Fal" means fruitful, putting a "ni" in front negates the meaning.) Their lives are fruitless, their lives do not satisfy them. Every thing they do is full of "agi-aan", ignorance.
"Jis no parteet hovai tis kaa gaavi-aa thaa-ay pavai so paavai dargeh maan."
"Jis no" means that person who has "parteet", "parteet" means true faith, true love. That person who has true love, true faith.. "Tis kaa" means that person, "gaavi-aa" means singing, praising the Lord, "thaa-ay pavai" means God receives them with open arms. "So", that person; "paavai", receives; "dargeh maan", honour and love. That person, who sings the praises of the Lord, is honoured in the court of the Lord.
"Jo bin parteetee kaptee koorhee koorhee akhee meetday un kaa utar jaa-igaa jhooth gumaan. ||3||"
"Jo" those "bin" without "parteetee" means devotion. Those who are without faith and devotion, who are "kaptee", angry. "Koorhee" means falsely, hippo-critically, "akhee meetday" close their eyes. Those people who close their eyes, those who make a show of themselves to the world. Guruji says of those people,"un kaa"; "utar jaa-igaa" means to fall off, "jhooth" means falseness, and "gumaan" means ego. Those people who pretend to be at high spiritual levels only to gain material things, those people’s egos will be broken hard by God.
"Jaytaa jee-o pind sabh tayraa tooN antarjaamee purakh bhagvaan."
"Jaytaa" means all of, "jee-o" means soul, "pind" means body. My soul and body, "sabh", all of it, are yours, oh God. You are "antarjaamee" the inner knower of all hearts.
"Daasan daas kahai jan naanak jayhaa tooN karaa-ihi tayhaa ha-o karee vakhi-aan. ||4||4||11||"
"Daasan daas" means the slave of your slaves. Nanak, who is the slave of your slaves, says "kahai"… As you make me speak, "jayhaa too karaa-ihi"; "tayhaa" in that way, I do this "vakhi-aan", this discourse. Guruji says don’t think these words are mine, for I’m the slave of his slaves. I am merely speaking the Lord’s speech.
May Guru Ram Das Ji bless us on this day. May we be able to focus our meditation on the Ture Guru. May we not fall into that category, who close their eyes in falseness. May we blessed with true love and true faith.
"Govind gun gaa-ee-ai jee-o laa-ay satguroo naal Dhi-aan. ||1|| rahaa-o."
