Shree Guru Arjan Dev ji Maharaj speaks in the Gujri raag in the form of sloks and paudian. Guruji begins with a very beautiful slok,
saajan thaerae charan kee hoe rehaa sadh dhhoor,
O sajan, O my eternal friend Waheguru, O my eternal friend satgur ji, thaerae charan kee hoe rehaa sadh dhhoor, may I be the dhoor, the dust of your charan, of your feet, hoe rehaa, forever.
Satgur Maharaj is speaking to God and saying, O God may I always be the dust of your feet, forever and forever. hoe rehaa, hoe rehaa means to remain, Sadh means forever, dhhoor means dust.
What does this mean? Becoming the dust of the feet of God? Satgur ji says, pehla maran kabool, jeevan ki chaadh aas, hovo sagal ki renuka, to aavo hamare paas. Become the dust of the feet of all, God is in all. Becoming the dust of the feet of all, is becoming the dust of the feet of God.
naanak saran thuhaareeaa paekho sadhaa hajoor,
Nanak has entered into your saran, into your protection, thuhaareeaa, thuhaareeaa means yours; and now with your Grace, when I became the dust of your feet, when I lost. What does this mean becoming the dust of someone’s feet? When you become the dust of someone’s feet, you lose all your own identity. You literally become the dust of their feet, you belong to them. That is it, there is no you left, there is only them, there is only Waheguru. naanak saran thuhaareeaa, through becoming the dust of your feet, I have entered into your saran.
Guru Sahib is teaching us the way of coming into the protection of God. You want to enter into the protection of God, first your ardaas must be this, your prayer, your plea to God must be, saajan thaerae charan kee hoe rehaa sadh dhhoor. This is the way. You must have this ardaas, this plea, this prayer in your heart, then you will enter into saran. Guruji is teaching us how we should go in front of the Guru, how we should be in front of God. Then what happens? Because of your grace, now I see you everywhere, hazoor. ever present with me, at all times.
ma 5,
Mehla 5. Remember the slok is the centre of the shabad. The Mehla and the Pauree, expound upon that slok. Mehla 5.
pathith puneeth asa(n)kh hohi har charanee man laag,
Guru Sahib ji says asa(n)kh, asa(n)kh means countless. Countless people have done bad things, bad people, you can all them sinners, pathith, have become puneeth, have become purified. How Guru ji? har charanee man laag, by laag, by attaching their man, their mind, to the charanee, to the feet of Hari, of Waheguru; by attaching their mind to Waheguru, because Waheguru is paap khandan. Hum paapi, tum paap khandan, we are the sinners, He is the One who carries away all sins. By attaching our minds, our sins are purified.
at(h)asat(h) theerathh naam prabh jis naanak masathak bhaag,
Guru Sahib ji says the Naam, the name of Waheguru, God, the Naam is the at(h)asat(h) theerathh, is the 68 places of pilgrimage, there are no other. For me, theerathh navann jaao, theerathh naam hai. Guru Sahib ji says, theerathh navann jaao, go and bathe in the theerathh, what theerathh? What pilgrimage site? The true one is Naam. Truly Naam is the only thing which can take off your sins from many past lives.
Bhareeai math papaan kai sang, Guru Nanak says in Japji Sahib, if your math, if your mind, if your thoughts are polluted with paap, with sins, ohh dhopai navain kai rang, you wash them in the color of God’s name. Jis Nanak masthak bhag, only those who have masthak bhag, who have such blessed, beautiful destiny written on their foreheads, realize this, Guru Arjan Dev ji, the fifth light of Guru Nanak is saying.
pourree,
Pauree
nith japeeai saas giraas naao paravadhigaar dhaa,
Satgur ji says nith, forever and forever, japeeai, meditate upon, meditate, saas giraas, with every saas, with every breath, with every bite of food that you take in, every morsel of food. What, naao, the name, paravadhigaar dhaa, paravadhigaar means One who looks after the whole world, nourishes the whole world. Meditate upon Waheguru with each breath, with each bite of food, forever and forever.
jis no karae reha(n)m this n visaaradhaa,
that person is blessed with raha(n)m, with God’s Grace, with God’s Kirpa, with God’s blessings, with Waheguru ji’s blessings; this n visaaradhaa, Waheguru ji does not visaaradhaa, Waheguru ji does not forget that person.
Look at Bhagat Namdev – when Namdev went to the temple, and they cast him out, saying he was lowly, Namdev went and sat behind the temple. When the Pandits and the religious scholars said, you are too low, you can’t go to the temple, he said, hasth khaleth teri dehureeai, bhagat karath naam pakadh oothaaia. And he said, moko tu na visaar, tu na visaar, tu na visaarai ramaeeia. He cried out to God, then what happened. The whole temple turned round, face turned towards Namdev. God does not forget that person who is blessed with His Grace. Even today, that temple, that massive temple, is near Sach Khand, Shri Hazoor Sahib, if anyone goes you should go there and see, it is the only temple that does not face the same way as the other temples. It faces the wrong way. Why? Because, it faced towards Namdev. All the other temples face towards the rising Sun, this one doesn’t.
aap oupaavanehaar aapae hee maaradhaa,
Waheguru is the One who oupaavanehaar, who creates everything, aapae hee, He Himself, maaradhaa, maaradhaa means to destroy, He destroys everything.
sabh kishh jaanai jaan bujh veechaaradhaa,
sabh kishh, everything, jaanai jaan, Waheguru knows everything, bujh veechaaradhaa, even then whilst knowing everything, He lives through His creation and watch and He understands, veechaaradhaa, and contemplates on this. It is such a beautiful game.
anik roop khin maahi kudharath dhhaaradhaa,
In khin, in one instant, in one second, He takes on anik, countless forms, kudharath dhhaaradhaa, through His great kudharath, through His great power.
jis no laae sach thisehi oudhhaaradhaa,
That person who Waheguruji laae, who attaches to the sach, the Truth, thisehi oudhhaaradhaa, that person is liberated by Waheguru.
jis dhai hovai val s kadhae n haaradhaa,
Whoever Waheguru is with, like Bhagat Namdev, s kadhae n haaradhaa, that person can never ever be defeated.
sadhaa abhag dheebaan hai ho this namasakaaradhaa,
Waheguruji’s dheebaan, Waheguruji’s Court, Waheguruji’s justice, sadhaa abhag, sadhaa, forever and forever, will never ever be broken, cannot ever perish, cannot ever be destroyed. ho this namasakaaradhaa, Guru Arjan Dev ji says, I bow before that Waheguru, who is so great and is so amazing.
May Shri Guru Arjan Dev ji do paap ka naash today, bless us with His Grace, we understand and are blessed with the understanding of this shabad, today and forever. May we learn how to fall into the protection of Waheguru, Once you fall into His protection, nothing can affect you, like Bhagat Namdev. Bhagat Namdev ji showed the words, jis dhai hovai val s kadhae n haaradhaa, the shabad to be the eternal Truth.
jis dhai hovai val s kadhae n haaradhaa. sadhaa abhag dheebaan hai ho this namasakaaradhaa.
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa! Waheguru ji ki Fateh!
