Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj begins in the Gujri Raag

kabhoo har si-o cheet na laa-i-o.,
kabhoo At any point, har si-o cheet na laa-i-o At any given time you have not attached your “cheet” your focus, your conciousness, “na” means to not, you have never attached your focus to what, you have never paid attention to what, never meditated to what? “har si-o” to that Hari, to that Waheguru who brings life to all. Never have you focused upon that Waheguru, that Hari. What have you done instead?

DhanDhaa karat bihaanee a-uDhahi gun niDh naam na gaa-i-o. ||1|| rahaa-o..,
a-uDhahi means your life span, bihaanee means to waste. You have wasted your life to what? What is DhanDhaa? DhanDhaa means just completely being colored in this material world. Every pursuit to do with material gain, everything to do with gain on this earth. Satguru Ji says you have not done, do not mistake this, Guru Arjan Dev Ji is not saying do not work in the world. Satgur ji is saying do “dharam dee kirat” . What does “dharam dee kirat” mean? It means work righteously and remember Waheguru within your heart whilst you do as well. Guru Sahib Ji is talking here about when we completely focus on the material and we put Waheguru out of the picture in our mind. That is not “dharam dee kirat” . “dharam dee kirat” is remembering Waheguru through everything. Satgur Ji says gun niDh naam na gaa-i-o you have not sung the Naam, you have not chanted the name of gun niDh – treasure of virtues. You have not meditated upon the treasure of virtue, Waheguru. rehaa-o Guru Ji says pause and think about this today.

ka-udee ka-udee jorat kaptay anik jugat kar Dhaa-i-o.,
kaptey means through sneaky plans, jorat you pull together, kaudee literally means a shell. Satgur Ji is talking about more material goods, you get together all this money, all this material goods bit by bit, bit by bit. You take something from someone here, you do something to someone here. anik jugat kar Dhaa-i-o Anik means countless, jugat means ways, methods, dhaa-io means to focus on something, to work on something. That is all you focus on, getting more and more and more. Does not matter how much you have, and that is what Satgur ji is saying, you want more and more. Like when Satgur Ji says in Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji, trisna virley ki hi bujhee hay That fire inside of greed is only put out for very very few people. Otherwise we are fighting with that all our lives, otherwise that is all the life becomes about. Satgut Ji is saying here. In the next line he says,

bisrat parabh kaytay dukh ganee-ah mahaa mohnee khaa-i-o. ||1||.,
bisrat by forgetting Waheguru, kaytay dukh ganee-ah you suffer great pains. Such pains which cannot be explained, how many can you take on. Just as Guru Amar Das Ji says in Anand Sahib on Ang 921 in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, livv churhkee laggee trisna maya amar vartaaya When you forget Waheguru like the child, when the womb is attached to Waheguru, when entering this world says in Gurbani , the attachment, that love is broken by what, by greed, by trisna. livv churhkee laggee trisna How is the love broken? When desires and greed attach themselves to the child. maya amar vartaaya and the maya runs its course, it runs its path. Guru Sahib ji is saying bisrat parabh kaytay dukh ganee-ah How many pains come out of this forgetting ofWaheguru? Countless. mahaa mohnee khaa-i-o What is the greatest pain? You are completely enveloped, khaa-io, literally means to be eaten by; You are completely eaten by mahaa mohnee, this great trickster, this great enticer of material world, you are enveloped by it when you forget God. That is the true pain. For the gursikhs who are shorn in half, or boiled in water or burnt alive, they were not in pain, Why? Because they knew. jion supna aur pekhna aisey jagg ko jaan in mai kuchh saachoo nahi nanak bin bhagwaan They realized this as Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji says in salok mehla 9. All this world is just a show and a drama and they were beyond it. But for those of us who have forgotten we are enveloped in maya and this is the greatest pain.

O my suaamee, O my Lord Waheguru, karahu anoograhu su-aamee mayray, anoograhu means to shower mercy; shower your grace, your mercy upon me. ganhu means count, mohi means mine, kamaa-io what I have done. Please don’t consider my actions. jap tap sanjam karam na kamaayaa seva saath na jaaniya har rayaa kahau nanak hum neech karamma saran bharey kee rakhoo sarma As we say everyday in Rehraas Sahib. Do not count my actions Waheguru because we are always going to make mistakes.

gobind da-i-aal kirpaal sukh saagar naanak har sarnaa-i-o.,
gobind O seat of the world, dai-aal – O merciful, kirpaal – O compassionate and blessing Waheguru, sukh saagar – O ocean of peace , naanak har sarnaa-i-o. Nanak is in the protection of Waheguru, Hari. Please save me from this world.

May Waheguru Ji do kirpaa upon us today and save us from falling into the clutches of maya. May Guru Arjan Dev Ji bless us that we remember Waheguru at all times and all situations.
