The hukamnama today is in the raag Vaddehans. The raag Vaddehans conveys the feelings of the soul bride on her wedding day. So there is a mixture of emotions; there is longing for the future, there are aspirations, there is looking back to the past. Many feelings are contained in this raag. Guru Ramdasji has blessed us with the ghorreeaa, the way the shabad is wrriten is in the style of ghorreeaa. Ghorreeaa were songs which were sung during the wedding procession. So Guruji is talking to the soul bride as we go along the wedding procession of the world.
First Guru Ramdasji says, “ik oankaar sathigur prasaadh” , there is one universal creative being who is found through the grace of the true Guru.
Dhaeh thaejan jee raam oupaaeeaa raam. This horse which the soul bride is to ride, is to mount in this life is this body. Guruji is saying, “The horse of the body was created by Lord God.” Then Guru Ramdasji says, “Dhann maanas janam punn paaeeaa raam; blessed is this human life.” Why is this life blessed? Because in this life you can find the Lord, in this life you can realize that God is within you! Then Guruji says, “punn paaeeaa raam; blessed is this human life which is only found through virtuous actions, through good actions, through good deeds.” Then Guruji says, “Maanas janam vadd punnae paaeiaa dhaeh s kanchan changarreeaa.” This human life is only found through great actions. It is only through great actions in our past lives that we have been blessed by God with this human life, with a chance to merge into the ultimate creative being. This body is like gold, this body is golden, is radiant, look after this body! In Guru Granth Sahibji says, “Nanak eis dehi ko paal; look after this body!” It is with this body that you are going to find the Lord, within the soul.
Then Guru Ramdasji says, “Guramukh rang chaloolaa paavai har har har nav rangarreeaa.” The one who follows the Guru, who loves the Guru, finds the deep crimson red color. What is this deep red color? Guruji goes on to tell us, “It is the color of the name of the Lord of God, of nourisher, of Hari.” That love of the name of the Lord is the color which dyes the dress of the Gurmukh.
Eaeh dhaeh s baakee jith har jaapee har har naam suhaaveeaa. This body is enchanting; this body is beautiful if you use it to chant upon, to meditate upon the name of the Lord. The name of the Lord makes this body beautiful, it adorns the body. Then Guruji says, “Vaddabhaagee paaee naam sakhaaee jan naanak raam oupaaeeaa.” Guruji reminds us again, “By great fortune you have found this body, you have been blessed with this human form, now all you have to do is make the name of the Lord your support. God has created this body for you, for you to merge into the ultimate creator again.”
Dhaeh paavo jeen bujh changaa raam. Upon this corpse of the body place the saddle of divine realization, divine understanding. Charr langhaa jee bikham bhueiangaa raam. Riding this horse I cross through terrifying bhueiangaa; which means snake. In this case it means poisonous. This world is full of poison; poisoned mind, poisoned thoughts, poisoned deeds. Guruji is saying, “By riding on the saddle of realization I cross through this terrifying poisoned world.” Bikham bhueiangaa anath tharangaa guramukh paar langhaaeae. In this terrifying poisoned world there are many countless waves; the wave of lust comes against us, the wave of anger, the wave of pain. Only those people who love the Guru, who face the Guru are carried across. Only those people are carried across.
Har bohith charr vaddabhaagee langhai gur khaevatt sabadh tharaaeae. Those who ride upon the boat of the name of the Lord are blessed, they have great fortunes. Those people cross across this ocean because the Guru gives them the name of the Lord and that means they are carried across. Anadhin har rang har gun gaavai har rangee har rangaa. What do they do? Day and night they are colored in the color of Lord’s love, the love of God’s name. They sing the praises of God day and night, 24/7. The one who is colored in the name of the Lord loves this beautiful color, this beautiful love of the Lord. Jan naanak nirabaan padh paaeiaa har outham har padh changaa. Servant Nanak has been blessed with a state of complete peace, ultimate peace, by merging into that creative being; I have been blessed with that state. The state of complete greateness, this level of God is the best state to be in.
Karreeaal mukhae gur giaan dhrirraaeiaa raam. The Guru’s wisdom, the Guru’s spiritual knowledge is the bridle which stares this body horse. The Guru has implanted the bridle of spiritual knowledge into the mouth of the body horse to direct the direction that the body horse goes in. Guruji is telling us through these metaphors how we are to control this mind and to bring the soul to the Lord. Than praem har chaabak laaeiaa raam. To the body of the horse the Lord stares me with the whip of love, with the stick of love. Than praem har har laae chaabak man jinai guramukh jeethiaa. Applying the whip/stick of the love again and again, Gurmukh conquers his mind and in the end he wins the whole world. Man jeethay jageet; one who wins the mind conquers the universe, conquers all the universes for all the universes dwell within yourself. “Jo brahmandey sohi pinday” , in Guru Granth Sahibji it says. What is in the universe that is within the body? Many may ask why is it the stick of love? Because the love creates pain in the soul and it is that pain which directs us back towards the creator, dukh daroo sukh rog bhaiya. Guruji says, “Agharro gharraavai sabadh paavai apio har ras peethiaa.” The mind which is untrained is trained. Then what happens when the mind is trained? Shabad pavay, the mind is trained through the shabad of the Lord. Apeyo har ras peetay. Only when the mind is trained through the shabad can you drink harras, only then can you enjoy the essence of Lord. Until the mind keeps bugging you, you cannot enjoy that essence. When you train the mind and stop it from ruining your experience then you can truly taste the essence of the Lord.
Then Guru Ramdasji tells us, “Sun sravan baanee gur vakhaanee har rang thuree charraaeiaa. With your ears listen to the word of the Guru, whatever the Guru says, whatever the Guru utters listen to that with your ears. Cover the horse of your body in the love of the Lord and listen to the bani. “When you are listening to the bani it is very important that you color yourself in that love”, that is what Guru Ramdasji is telling us. When you listen to bani, don’t just listen to it mechanically, color yourself in the love of Lord. Then Guruji says, “Mehaa maarag panth bikharraa jan naanak paar langhaaeiaa.” Servant Nanak has crossed over the greatest path, the longest path. What is the greatest, most long and treacherous path? Its our life. Guruji says, “I have crossed that by tuning myself into Lord’s love.”
Then Guruji says, “Ghorree thaejan dhaeh raam oupaaeeaa raam.” This body horse that we have been blessed with was created by the Lord. Jith har prabh jaapai saa dhan dhann thukhaaeeaa raam. That person who meditates upon the Lord that person is blessed, blessed! That person who uses this body to meditate upon the Lord is blessed. Jith har prabh jaapai saa dhann saabaasai dhur paaeiaa kirath jurrandhaa. That body horse by which we meditate upon the Lord, that body horse is to be praised and is blessed. But you only find this through merits of past actions, through good deeds in your past lives, through great fortunes, through great blessing. It is a great blessing that Guruji is telling us again and again in this shabad to be blessed with this body.
Charr dhaeharr ghorree bikham laghaaeae mil guramukh paramaanandhaa. Riding this body horse you have the potential to cross across this terrifying world ocean and fall into the creative being. Meet up with the ones who follow the Guru. Then what happens? As you meet up with the gurmukhs they will meet the Lord. As the Gurmukhs meet the Lord after crossing across this ocean, what happens? They go into greatest bliss, supreme bliss. Har har kaaj rachaaeiaa poorai mil santh janaa jannj aaee. This wedding of the soul to God has been organized by the perfect Lord. The marriage party is made up of the saints! The saints are the marriage party who witness this marriage of the soul to the Lord. Jan naanak har var paaeiaa mangal mil santh janaa vaadhaaee. In this last line Guru Ramdasji says, “Servant Nanak has found the spouse of the Lord and now there are songs of happiness being played. The saints get together and they sing songs of congratulations, of joy!”
Today’s hukamnama has been talking about the body as a horse. It has also been talking about the soul bride. The soul is the being who rides upon this horse body. Guruji has said to us through these metaphors, through this beautiful poetry of Gurbani, how we have to reach that supreme being.
May we be blessed by Guru Ramdasji that we realize that creative being is within us and we meditate upon that creative being today.
Dhaeh thaejan jee raam oupaaeeaa raam. Dhann maanas janam punn paaeeaa raam
