Katha by Sukha Singh
In the Soohee Raag, in the Raag of deep crimson color of love, Guru Arjan Dev ji speaks today and says
jeevath marai bujhai prabh soe
Only those people can bujhai, can understand, can recognize, can experience Prabh, Waheguru, only those people can experience Prabhu, experience Waheguru, experience God, who are jeevath marai, jeevath means being alive, marai means to be dead, that person who is dead while staying alive, bujhai prabh soe, that person understands Waheguru.
Guru Sahib ji says, pehla maran kabool jeevan ki chad aas, first accept death and give up all hopes of life, hovo saban ki renuka, toh aaoo hamare paas, become the dust of the feet of all then come to me. This idea of dying while being alive is that your ego dies, your desires die, your attachment dies, your hatred dies, that’s what it is to die while being alive.
this jan karam paraapath hoe
this jan, someone who is on that level, someone who is at that stage, only with great karam, only with great fortune, according to your past actions can you meet someone who is at that stage.
sun saajan eio dhuthar thareeai
O sajan, O my friend, listen eio, in this way, dhuthar thareeai, dhutar means the ocean of this world, thareeai means to swim across, this is the way to swim across the ocean.
mil saadhhoo har naam ouchareeai
Meet the sadhus, meet the saint and do what, har naam ouchareeai, ouchareeai means to chant, to repeat, har naam, means the name of Waheguru, repeat Waheguru ji’s name with the saints, with those people who are dead whilst alive.
rehaao
Guru ji says pause and think about this.
eaek binaa dhoojaa nehee jaanai
eaek binaa, without the one Waheguru, dhoojaa nehee jaanai, know that there is no other, there is no one else, there is only Waheguru.
ghatt ghatt a(n)thar paarabreham pashhaanai
paarabreham means Waheguru, that paarabreham, that Waheguru, pashhaanai, realize that He is ghatt, ghatt a(n)thar, He is in each ghatt, ghatt, in each heart and he is a(n)thar, He is inside you.
jo kishh karai soee bhal maanai
jo kishh, whatever karai, Waheguru ji does, soee bhal maanai, accept that as good for you, even though you may think it is bad, it is good for you.
kayti-aa dookh bhookh sad maar, ayhi bhe daat tayree daataar, Guru Nanak says in Jap ji Sahib, even though you may have to go through dookh bhookh, pain so many hungers, sad maar, and continued harrassment, accept these too as gifts from God.
aadh a(n)th kee keemath jaanai
That person who accepts everything Waheguru ji does as good, jaanai, understands the keemath, the value of that Waheguru who is this same in the aadh, in the beginning, and a(n)th, in the end; from beginning to end that Waheguru, who has always been there, understand, the keemath, the value of that Waheguru, the greatness of Waheguru.
kahu naanak this jan balihaaree
Nanak says I am balihaaree, I am a sacrifice to that jan, to that humbe being
jaa kai hiradhai vasehi muraaree
in whose hiradhai, in whose heart muraaree, Waheguru ji vasehai, dwells. That person who has God in his heart, Guru Sabib ji says I am a sacrifice again and again to that person.
Guru Sahib ji tells us today to meet with those people and to take on their virtues.
sun saajan eio dhuthar thareeai || mil saadhhoo har naam ouchareeai ||1|| rehaao ||
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
Katha by Ek Oang Kaar Kaur
Today’s Hukamnama is from Guru Arjun Dev Ji in Raag Soohi from Ang 741 of the SGGS. The hukam today is talking about the beginning and ending of life and the value of living in the awareness of that whole picture of life and death at the same time in your day to day world. The first line begins by:
jeevat marai bujhai parabh so-ay
Jeevat Marai is one of the more obscure phrases to understand in Gurbani. It often gets translated as one who remains dead while yet alive. So what exactly does that mean? Another way to look at the phrase is that the person who while alive never forgets death. In Japji Sahib there is a pauri where Guru Nanak says that let remembrance of death be the patched coat that you wear everyday. So one who is simultaneously in the awareness of life and it’s transience and that it can end at any time, that death is just next breath away. Someone who can really train the mind to be perceiving life in the context of a brief moment that will end with death. Those people, Guru Arjun is saying, really understand the transcendent power of the universe, they really get at the deep level of this master, creator. They can understand the master.
tis jan karam paraapat ho-ay
He says if you happen to meet a servant of God who really understands this life and death and who can perceive life and death in every moment at the same time: it is a fortunate gift. It’s gift from a previous life, a positive karma you have earned from the past life when you have the fortune to meet someone who has this outlook and perspective on life.
He goes on to then hone in this notion of how we get through life. In the next line he say:
sun saajan i-o dutar taree-ai
He says listen, listen very deeply friends of mine, if you want to get through the fearful and awful ocean of life this is how to do it.
mil saaDhoo har naam uchree-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Be with the company of people who are meditative, who are disciplined, who are compassionate and with people who really have taken the time to compassionately understand the spiritual truth of life. Spend your time talking about and discussing Har Naam, talking about the divine identity within the creation and the divine essence and energy that holds the whole creation together.
He continues to say:
ayk binaa doojaa nahee jaanai
He says except for this one truth or this one divine energy, there is nothing else besides it to know. This is a very powerful line where Guru Arjun is saying really there is nothing else you need to know as a human being except the one transcendent divine energy that contains everything, that dwells in everything. If you spent your life just learning that and understanding that one thing then there is nothing else that is needed for you to know.
In Gurbani, the Guru’s are always orienting that our experience of Gurbani is an internal experience and we perceive it within ourselves and we can perceive it within the creation. So the next line:
ghat ghat antar paarbarahm pachhaanai
He is saying that recognize that Parbraham, recognize that this powerful lord and master is inside of each and every heart. So to see that one God, is to see in the heart of everyone around you.
Again more training about how to engage in our lives and he says:
jo kichh karai so-ee bhal maanai
Whatever happens accept that as good. There is a noble purpose behind it. Whatever our minds may judge the reality is that the divine is in every heart and there is something that the divine is creating with every action. So whatever occurs accept it as the highest good and the most noble thing.
aad ant kee keemat jaanai
Everything has a beginning and everything has an end. Know that there is a value in the beginning of things and there is a value in the ending of things including your own incarnation, including your own life.
The Guru Arjun ends the lines by saying that:
kaho naanak tis jan balihaaree || jaa kai hirdai vaseh muraaree. ||
Guru Nanak is a sacrifice to that servant, to that humble person who is really in the heart dwelling with murari, which is another word for God. There is so many different words for God in Gurbani. Murari comes from Mura which means to fence or to envelop. So within our own heart we can find the experience of that divine energy that holds for that entire universe, envelops the entire existence and experience of time and space. So Nanak is saying that I am a sacrifice to those people who within their own heart are living with the experience of the divine energy that envelops and attains everything.
This helps us to understand that how we can be living in the awareness of death. When we are in touch with that power that holds all then we can be alive and also know our own mortality, our own impermanence in the physical form.
