Today’s Hukamnama is in Raag Dhanaasree.Dhanaasree Raag is the raag of care-freeness; raag with feeling about it of being totally achint, totally liberated from worries. Shabad is by Siri Guru Arjan Dev ji Maharaj, the fifth light of Guru Nanak. It’s in ghar 2, which is the roopak taal, there are "Chau-pday", paday means steps, there are four steps, four separate steps to this shabad.

Ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad
There is One Universal Creative Being, Ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad , who is sat who is True and is found by the satgur, True Guru’s parsaad, parsaad means Grace, blessings; only through the blessings of the True Guru can we find the True Creative Lord who is inside of us.

Chhod jaahi say karahi paraal
The first line of the Shabad Chhod jaahi, that which you will leave, Chhod means to abandon, to leave, Jaahi means that which you will have to; the thing which you will have to leave behind, say karahi paraal. Paraal means straw. Guru ji is saying is that the first meaning of this line is, that which you have collected, the straw you have collected, you will have to leave it behind. The maya, which is like straw, which you have collected is worthless you will have to leave it behind. The second meaning is that Chhod jaahi, that which we have to leave behind, say karahi paraal; paraal also means to try and get something. So another meaning of this line, of this tuk is the thing which you will leave behind the maya, the Jhoot, the falseness, worldly things which you will have to leave behind, when you die, things which you will have to abandon, which won’t go with you, which won’t go with your soul, say karahi paraal, paraal means you try to get them, say karahi, you try and get those things. What Guruji is saying here is that we do not look for immortality, we do not look for the One Creator Lord, we look for the things He has created.

Kaam na aavahi say janjaal
Guru Arjan Dev ji says that kaam na aavahi, kaam means to be of use; na aavahi, these will not be, say janjaal, these entanglements, janjaal means entanglements, jaal actually means a net, so this net of entanglement around you, say janjaal this maya, will be of no use to you.

Sang na chaaleh tin si-o heet
Sang na chaaleh, sang means the things which are with you, na chaaleh will not go with you. Maharaj ji is saying that things that are with you will not go with you; tin si-o heet, heet means attachment. To those things that won’t go with us, we are attached – to our car, to our house, to our bodies, to our TV sets, to our radios, to our computers. We are attached to those things.

Jo bairaa-ee say-ee meet
Guru ji says Jo bairaa-ee, those who are actually your enemies, say-ee meet, Bairaa-ee means enemies, say-ee meet means you think of those as your friends, meet means friends. Those things which take us away from Guru and God, we hold those things close to our heart.

Aisay bharam bhulay sansaaraa
Guru ji is saying Aisay bharam in such bharam, in such doubt, bharam means doubt or confusion, bhulay sansaaraa, bhulay means has gone astray, sansaaraa means the world. The whole world, Guru ji is saying it is not one or two, the whole world is enveloped in these entanglements, this confusion.

Janam padaarath kho-ay gavaaraa.
Janam padaarath, padaarath means gift, or commodity, janam means of this human life, the gift of this human life which we have been blessed with. We have been blessed with this human life in which we can become one with our creator Lord. kho-ay gavaaraa, kho-ay means to waste, gavaaraa means the foolish one. The foolish human beings have wasted the greatest gift of human life.

Rahaa-o
rahaa-o, pause and think about this line today Guru ji says.

Saach Dharam nahee bhaavai deethaa
Saach Dharam, saach means the ultimate truth, dharm means the ultimate path of righteousness, nahee bhaavai deethaa, nahee bhaavai means does not like, deeta means to see. We do not like to see truth or righteousness. We had rather trick ourselves by falseness.

Jhooth Dhoh si-o rachi-o meethaa
Guru ji says in this line, jhooth mean falseness, dhoh means deception, not just deceiving others, but deceiving ourselves; telling ourselves that we will live forever, and that there is no need for meditation, no need for becoming one with that creator Lord; si-o rachi-o meethaa, rachi-o means they seem, meethaa, sweet. Falseness and deception seem sweet to us.

Daat pi-aaree visri-aa daataaraa
Daat pi-aaree, daat means the creation, gift, pi-aaree means seems lovely, all these gifts, all this maya that Guru ji has created, all this stuff around us, you know the stuff we have been blessed with, our cars, family, we love them. visri-aa daataaraa, visri-aa means to forget, but we’ve forgotten the daataaraa, the One giver who has given all these things to us.

Jaanai naahee maran vichaaraa
Jaanai naahee, jaanai means to know, nahee means does not, maran vichaaraa, vichaaraa means the idea, maran means death. Guru ji is saying vichaaraa can also mean someone who is wretched, someone who is pathetic, Guru ji is saying the wretched human being does not remember the idea of death, that we have to go from this earth one day.

Vasat paraa-ee ka-o uth rovai
Vasat paraa-ee, vasat means a thing, a commodity, paraa-ee means that belongs to someone else, possessions that belong to others, ka-o-th rovai, uth rovai means to cry out, so all these possessions of others, we cry out for them.

Karam Dharam saglaa ee khovai
Karam Dharam, karam means good deed, dharam means righteousness, saglaa ee khovai, khovai means to forget, to lose, we lose our good actions, we forfeit our good actions, we forfeit our righteousness for these things, these transitory things, which in the end, would not accompany our soul.

Hukam na boojhai aavan jaanay
Hukam na boojhai, hukam means God’s eternal command, God’s will. na boojhai, to not understand, boojhai means to understand, we don’t understand God’s will. Therefore aavan jaanay, we are reincarnated. We come back on this earth aavan means to come back on, jaanay means to leave it. We come to this earth, take on one life form, we leave it and take on another life form, because we do not understand God’s will.

Paap karai taa pachhotaanay
Paap karai, paap means sin, karai means we do; first we sin, taa pachhotaanay and afterwards, when we have to live out the fruits of these sins, taa pachhotaanay, pachhotaanay means to regret to repent, to lament for. When we have to live out the fruits of what we’ve done, we regret, repent, and then we ask for God to help us.

Jo tuDh bhaavai so parvaan
Guru ji says the way to live is this, believe in your mind jo tudh bhaavai, jo means anything tudh means you bhaavai means please, whatever pleases O God,so parvaan, parvaan means acceptable, so means that, what ever pleases you O God, that’s what is acceptable for me. That is the way the Guru’s Sikhs lives their lives, that is the way spiritual persons lives their lives, they accept whatever God gives.

Tayray bhaanay no kurbaan
Tayray bhaanay, to your Will, I am a sacrifice, kurbaan means sacrifice, I am a sacrifice to the way you run this world.

Naanak gareeb bandaa jan tayraa
gareeb means poor, poor Nanak is your slave, bandaa means slave, jan means servant, tayraa means yours.

Raakh lay-ay saahib parabh mayraa
Raakh lay-ay, please protect me, raakh means protect, lay-ay means please protect me; raakh also means save, Oh my Lord God and Master, please save me. Guru ji is saying that the only way we can be saved is to fall at the feet of the master, at the feet of our Guru, and ask Him to save us. For the whole world is deceived by this deception, but only those who the Guru showers His grace on are saved.

I will leave you with the line of the rahaa-o and may we all realize that we are wasting this human life, and it is such a precious, precious, precious gift for us from God. May we not waste this day today, with Guru’s grace.

Aisay bharam bhulay sansaaraa.
janam padaarath kho-ay gavaaraa. Rahaa-o
