Today’s Hukamnama is by Guru Ramdaas Ji in the raag Soohee on Ang 736 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj. Raag Soohee is a raag of complete devotional love. Raag Soohee is a raag, which is completely colored like a dress of the bridegroom in the color of love.
"Keetaa karnaa sarab rajaa-ee kichh keechai jay kar sakee-ai." "Aapnaa keetaa kichhoo na hovai ji-o har bhaavai ti-o rakhee-ai. ||1||" "Mayray har jee-o sabh ko tayrai vas." "Asaa jor naahee jay kichh kar ham saakah ji-o bhaavai tivai bakhas. ||1|| Rahaa-o." "Rahaa-o" "Sabh jee-o pind dee-aa tuDh aapay tuDh aapay kaarai laa-i-aa." "Jayhaa tooN hukam karahi tayhay ko karam kamaavai jayhaa tuDh Dhur likh paa-i-aa. ||2||" "Panch tat kar tuDh sarisat sabh saajee ko-ee chhayvaa kari-o jay kichh keetaa hovai." "Iknaa satgur mayl tooN bujhaaveh ik manmukh karahi se rovai. ||3||" "Har kee vadi-aa-ee ha-o aakh na saakaa ha-o moorakh mugaDh neechaan." Jan naanak ka-o har bakhas lai mayray su-aamee sarnaagat pa-i-aa ajaan. ||4||4||15||24||" "Mayray har jee-o sabh ko tayrai vas. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw, vwihgurU jI kI &qh!
"Keetaa" means whatever that has happened, "karnaa" means whatever will happen/occur. All the events have happened, all the events which have been created, and all that will be created, "sarab rajaa-ee" where "sarab" means all and "rajaa-ee" means according to the will, command of God. Everything that had been created, everything that has happened, everything that will happen, it all happens within God’s will/command. "Kichh keechai jay kar sakee-ai" where "kich" means something, "keechai" means to do. We could only do something ourselves, "jay kar sakee-ai". "Jay" means if, "kar" means to do and "sakee-ai" means we could. Only if we were able to do something ourselves could we do it. Guru Ji is saying what is there that we can do by ourselves? In the next line Guru Ji answers.
"Aapnaa" means by ourselves, "keetaa kichhoo" means what we can do, "na" means nothing, "hovai" means to happen. By ourselves we cannot make anything happen. We cannot do anything at all. "Ji-o har bhaavai ti-o rakhee-ai" where "ji-o" means in whichever way, "har" means God, "bhaavai" means to please. In whatever way it pleases God "ti-o rakhee-ai", where "rakhee-ai" means to be kept, protected, saved in that way and "ti-o" means in that way. We cannot do anything by ourselves. Only as it pleases God, only as it is the will of God, we are saved and we are protected.
In this line, Guru Ji is talking directly to God: "Mayray har jee-o" means oh my beloved Lord, where "jee-o" is a term of love and respect, saying oh my dear God. "Sabh" means everything, "tayrai vas" means in your power, in your control ("vas" means control/power/command). Oh my dear God, everything is in your power/control.
"Jor" means power, "naahee" means none at all. Guru Ji says I have no power at all. "Jay kichh kar ham saakah" means to do anything at all without you God. "Ji-o" means in which way, "bhaavai" means as it pleases you, to be in your will ("bhaavai" means to please), "bakhas" means to forgive, save, and liberate us. In any way you seem fit, oh God, in any way it pleases you please save us is all I ask.
Guruji says, “Pause and think about it.”
"Sabh" means all, "jee-o" means the soul, "pind" means this body. God has given us the soul, God has given us the body. "TuDh" means oh God, you, "aapay" means yourself, "dee-aa" means have given us, "kaarai" means to act and "laa-i-aa" means to cause. You, yourself cause us to act, cause us to do things.
"Jayhaa" means in which way, "karahi" means to do, "hukam" means command. Whichever way you command us, in whichever way you will us, oh God, "tayhay ko karam kamaavai", where "tayhay" means in that way, "kamaavai" means to and "karam" means to act. So, in that way we act, we carry out those actions. "Dhur" means from the primal point, "likh paa-i-aa" means to have written. In which way you have written that pre-ordained destiny that way we act.
"Panch tat" means from the five elements, "sarisat" means the entire universe, "saajee" means to create and "sabh" means entire. Oh God, from the five elements you created the entire universe. Guru Ji is showing us what the meaning of living in God’s will is. God has made us from five elements and from those five elements, we can make anything else but Guru Ji says "ko-ee chhayvaa kari-o jay kichh keetaa hovai". Guru Ji puts down a challenge to any human being who thinks he/she can defy God’s will by saying "ko-ee chhayvaa kari-o" which means can anyone make a sixth element? "Jay kichh keetaa hovai" if they can create it, let me see it. Guru Ji is saying we cannot create a sixth element. Many people ask, well what is the will of God. A small analogy to this is, imagine the human is like a fish, the fish is within the ocean. In the ocean the fish can go, left, right, forwards, backwards, any direction within that ocean but it cannot cross over the land boundaries of that ocean, over the two sides of that ocean, over the two banks of that river. That is how the will of God is. This analogy is from a very learned scholar of the panth: Giani Sant Singh Ji Maskeen. Maskeen Ji said the Hukam is like the banks of a river. We cannot go outside of those banks but inside we have a small amouont of space to go left and right. Guru Ji is explaining what the will of God is.
Some unite ("mayl") with the True Guru ("satgur") and "tooN bujhaaveh" means you, God, make them understand, you bless them with realisation. "Bujhaaveh" means to cause them to understand, to bless them with realisation. While others "ik", follow their minds ("manmukh") and keep following their mind ("karahi") and end up crying ("se rovai").
In these last two lines, Guru Ram Das Ji shows complete devotional love for God. "Har kee vadi-aa-ee" means the greatness of God, "aakh" means to say, "na saakaa" means not be able to. I cannot even say how great God is. "Ha-o moorakh" means I’m foolish. "MugaDh means to not think, I cannot even think, "neechaan" means lowly. I’m foolish, I don’t think and I’m lowly.
Oh God, "bakhas" means to forgive, to liberate, to save, "mayray su-aamee" means my Lord Master, please forgive servant ("jan") Nanak. I have entered your "sarnaagat", your sanctuary, and protection. "Pa-i-aa" means to enter and "ajaan" means I’m an ignorant one. Guru Ji, despite me being ignorant, despite me being "ajaan", despite me not knowing anything, I have entered into your sanctuary so please save and forgive me in whichever way you can.Today’s Hukamnama is focusing on just that, the Hukam of God. The lines from Japji Sahib come to mind: "hukamai a(n)dhar sabh ko baahar hukam n koe". Everything is within the will of God. Outside of that there is nothing. Please God, bless us that we may understand Your Hukam and may we understand what your will is, what Your Hukam is. May we realise we have no power. There is only You.
Åsaa jor naahee jay kichh kar ham saakah ji-o bhaavai tivai bakhas. ||1|| Rahaa-o."
