Satguru Amar Das ji Maharaj blessed us with the Hukamnama Sahib today. Satguru ji says,
guramukh bhagath karehi prabh bhaavehi anadhin naam vakhaanae
The gurmukhs, the ones who follow whatever the Guru says, whatever comes from the mukh of the Guru – those who follow that are Gurmukhs. Satguruji says, Those blessed people bhagath karehi engage in bhagtee – in devotional worship. They are absorbed into Akal Purakh’s love. Prabh bhaavehi, through bhagtee they please prabh: Waheguru, Akal Purakh. What is it they do? Anadhin naam vakhaanae. Day and night they chant, they speak about, they talk of, they discuss, they understand, they contemplate the Naam, Akal Purakh ji’s name. Then what does Akal Purakh do? Satguruji says,
bhagathaa kee saar karehi aap raakhehi jo thaerai man bhaanae
Waheguru himself protects the devotees and nourishes them and nurtures them in many different ways. Jo thaerai man bhaanae. But to only those who are pleasing to the mind of Waheguru, are pleasing to Akal Purakh, Waheguru.
thoo gunadhaathaa sabadh pashaathaa gun kehi gunee samaanae
You are the giver of all virtue and you are realized, Akal Purakh, thorugh the Guru’s shabad, the Guru’s word. gun kehi- by singing the praises, by meditating upon the virtues of Akal Purakh, gunee samaanae: we will merge into the ocean of all virtue. People say what is the point of chanting Gurbani. They say that by reading the train timetable again and again we will not get to the station or where we need to be. They use this type of mentality. But if we look at what Gurbani is, it is not the train timetable. We should never bring Gurbani down to that level. Gurbani itself is the vehicle, is the jahaaz, is the bohit. Again and again Gurbani talks about in various ways how Guru’s shabad, Guru’s word is a vehicle to take us across. Chanting bani cannot be equated to reading a train timetable. The gurbani itself is the vehicle to realize God because Guru Sahibji says in Gauri on Ang 245, raam naam kar bohithaa jeeo sabadh khaevatt vich paae – the name of Akal Purakh is the boat and the Shabad is the boatman within to guide the boat. So Gurbani is a vehicle to take our soul across this ocean. Gun kehi gunee samaanae. By meditating upon the virtues we will merge into the virtuous Akal Purakh.
man maerae har jeeo sadhaa samaal
Oh my mind always meditate upon har jeeo – that respected, that loving Waheguru, that hari.
anth kaal thaeraa baelee hovai sadhaa nibehai thaerai naal
Baelee literally means your best friend. Anth kaal means at the time of death, at the very last moment. Even in that very last desperate moment, the Naam will be your friend. The Naam will look after you. Sadhaa nibehai thaerai – and this Naam will remain with you forever.
rehaao
Guruji says, Pause and think about this.
dhusatt choukarree sadhaa koorr kamaavehi naa boojhehi veechaarae
Choukarree literally means gathering, getting together. The gathering of the dhusatt – literally means those people whose mind, body and soul is imbued with falsehood, those people who do not understand and do not make any attempt to understand the shabad, those people who belittle Guru ke Sikh – that’s called a dhusatt choukarree. That gathering of evil doers for ever gathers together falsehood. Naa boojhehi veechaarae – they do not understand the wisdom of the Guru.
nindhaa dhusattee thae kin fal paaeiaa haranaakhas nakhehi bidhaarae
Satguruji says, Through doing slander and carrying out evil acts how can one gain the fruits of spiritual wisdom, liberation, love or any of these things. Satuguruji says you can’t! Satguruji gives the example of haranaakhas – haranaakhas nakhehi bidhaarae. Guruji says, Look at haranaakhas – the king who ruled over the earth – he was ripped apart by the nails of the Narsingh avatar – the incarnation of Narsingh.
prehilaadh jan sadh har gun gaavai har jeeo leae oubaarae
prehilaadh was a servant of Akal Purakh, a devoted servant. What did he do? Gun gaavai – forever he meditated upon the virtues of Hari, of Akal Purakh. har jeeo leae oubaarae – Akal Purakh saved him. Satguruji gives an example, look at prehilaadh and look at haranaakhas – Satugurji always looks after His bhagats, no matter what situation it is.
aapas ko bahu bhalaa kar jaanehi manamukh math n kaaee
What is the nishaani – way of telling – who lacks understanding. The manmukh always thinks aapas – himself or herself is the best. Manmukh math n kaaee – those manmukhs who follow their mind, Guru ji says, don’t have any mat, any understanding, any virtue.
saadhoo jan kee nindhaa viaapae jaasan janam gavaaee
They viaapae – indulge in the nindaa of saadhoo jan – those people who serve Akal Purkah, who have conquered their minds, the sadhoos – they [manmukhs] slander them. In this way jaasan janam gavaaee – they leave after having wasted their whole life.
raam naam kadhae chaethehi naahee anth geae pashuthaaee
In their lives kadhae vi – at any point – they do not meditate upon raam naam. They never meditate upon it. In the end they will pashuthaaee – they will regret, Satguruji says.
safal janam bhagathaa kaa keethaa gur saevaa aap laaeae
Satugurji says, Akal Purakhji Himself keethaa – meaning to do Himself, safal janam – means to make [one’s incarnation] truthful. Satguruji Himself makes the lives of bhagats fruitful. Akal Purakh sends them seva Himself of the Guru and aap laaeae – He Himself engages them in the seva.
sabadhae raathae sehajae maathae anadhin har gun gaaeae
Once they are imbued in the Shabad they become intoxicated with sehaj – with complete Bliss within. They do not need any other drug. Day and night they sing the praises of Hari, of Akal Purakh.
naanak dhaas kehai baenanthee ho laagaa thin kai paaeae
Nanak the servant, Nanak the slave makes this one baenanthee – this one prayer: ho laagaa thin kai paaeae – may I be attached to the feet of those bhagats who day and night sing the praises of Akal Purakh.
So in this shabad, Satguruji Maharaj blesses us with the understanding – man maerae har jeeo sadhaa samaal | anth kaal thaeraa baelee hovai sadhaa nibehai thaerai naal. In the end the Naam will save us. That’s what Guruji is telling us today.
sabadhae raathae sehajae maathae anadhin har gun gaaeae |
naanak dhaas kehai baenanthee ho laagaa thin kai paaeae |4|5|
