Maharaj Siri Guru Arjan Dev ji is talking to us today in the Sorath Raag. The Sorath Raag is a raag in which the praises of Waheguru are sung, the merits of God, the qualities of God are talked about. The raag has a very beautiful quality of getting us in touch with Waheguruji’s Gun, his praises. Maharaj Guru Arjan Devji has written this in the Ghar Phela, in the first house. Ghar Phela means this shabad is in the Datara Taal, which has six matra. It is also in Ashtpatiaan. Ashtpatiaan means eight different bits to the Shabad. Asht means eight, patiaan means feet. So there are eight feet to this Shabad.

Ik-oNkaar; There is one eternal, creative, destructive, nourishing being. Sat who is true for ever. Gur parsaad; who is found with the Guru’s Grace.

Sabh jag jineh upaa-i-aa bhaa-ee karan kaaran samrath, sabh jag means this whole world, upaa-i-aameans to create, bhaa-ee means brother. Oh brother the One who has created the whole world is karan kaaran; the cause of all causes, he has caused everything, he is samrath; the one who knows everything, who is omniscient.

jee-o pind jin saaji-aa bhaa-ee day kar apnee vath, Jee-o means soul, pind means body, jin means whom, saaji-aa means to create. He is the One who has created; Waheguru is the One who created the mind, the soul and the body. Day kar means by giving, apnee means his own, vath means power. By investing a part of Himself into the mortal Waheguru made this body, this soul. This soul is a part of Waheguru ji’s immortal power.

Kin kahee-ai ki-o daykhee-ai bhaa-ee kartaa ayk akath, Kin means how, kahee-ai means to describe, to speak, how can we describe Waheguru, O brother, ki-o daykhee-ai; how can He be seen with these worldly eyes. Kartaa ayk akath because the Creator, the Karta, is ayk, is One, who is akath which means indescribable, you cannot describe God. We do not have the words to describe Waheguru.

Gur govind salaahee-ai bhaa-ee jis tay jaapai tath, Gur means the Guru, Govind means the seat of the universe, which is talking about God, salaahee-ai means to sing the praises of. Sing the praises of the Guru, and the Waheguru oh brother jis tay jaapai tath. If you want to realise God, if you want to be one with God then jaapai; to find out, that means the essence. The essence of life, the essence of God, the essence of that almighty, that all creator will only be found from the Guru. So praise the Guru, read the mantra, so only by praising him, praising the Guru will you find him.

Mayray man japee-ai har bhagvantaa, Mayray man; oh my mind, japee-ai means to meditate upon, har means the Waheguru, bhagvantaa means Lord. Meditate upon Lord God my mind.

Naam daan day-ay jan apnay dookh darad kaa hantaa. What does He, Waheguru, do when we start doing His meditation, He has given naam daan; the gift of His name to jan apnay; to His own servant. He blesses His servant with the gift of His Naam, the gift of His name. Then what happens? Dookh; pain, darad means sufferings, kaa means of, hanta means end. He ends the pain and suffering of His servant. The one who is attached to the Naam is above pain and suffering.

Rahaa-o, Guruji says, Pause and think about this!

jaa kai ghar sabh kish hai bhaaee no nidh bharae bhanddaar. You want to be above pain and suffering? Meditate upon God jaa kai in whose; ghar means house, sabh kichh; everything, hai means to be present, oh Bhai. Oh brother, in His house he has everything. Everything comes from God, everything is His. Na-o niDh bharay bhandaar. Na-o niDh means the nine treasures, bharay means to be full, bhandaar means treasure. His treasure chest is a warehouse of goods with what this world is overflowing, with the nine treasures, with all treasures.

The nine treasures is a concept in India which is meant to encompass all the other treasures of the world. Basically Guruji is saying, God has created everything, everything belongs to Him, He is one who gives us everything.

Tis kee keemat naa pavai bhaa-ee oochaa agam apaar, Tis kee means His, keemat means worth value, naa pavai means cannot be estimated, cannot be found. You cannot put a value on God, He is above value. Bhai, O brother, He is oocha; He is high, higher than high, agam means cannot be known by this mere mortal understanding on the planet, apaar means infinite, no end.

Jee-a jant partipaaldaa bhaa-ee nit nit kardaa saar, Jee-a jant means all creatures, all beings, partipaaldaa he nourishes, looks after, he cherishes. Bhaa-ee, Oh brother Waheguruji looks after all creatures, all beings. In Chaupai Sahib from Guru Gobind Singh ji Chintii te Chunkar asthula. From the smallest ant to the biggest elephant Waheguru is the one looking after everything. Waheguru is the one looking after them all. Nit nit means continually, karda means to do, saar means looking after, taking care of everything. Take any doubt out about why Waheguru is the One looking after everything.

Satgur pooraa bhaytee-ai bhaa-ee sabad milaavanhaar, Satgur means True Guru, pooraa means the Perfect Guru. So the True, Perfect Guru bhaytee-ai; meet with. Guru ji is saying to us, Oh brother, meet with the True Guru from inside, from your heart. Then what happens? Sabad milaavanhaar. What does the True Guru do? He is milaavanhaar; He is the One can unite you with the sabad, with the mantar of God, then you become one with God.

sachae charan saraeveeahi bhaaee bhram bho hovai naas, sachae means true, charan means lotus feet, sarayvee-ah means to serve. Serve the true Guru, Siri Guru Granth Sahib ji, with all your love, oh brother. Bharam bha-o hovai naas. Bharam means doubt, bha-o means fear, hovai means to be, naas means to be destroyed. Your doubt and fear will be destroyed if you serve the Guru and if you follow everything that the Guru says.

mil santh sabhaa man maajeeai bhaaee har kai naam nivaas, Mil means to join with, sant sabhaa means the society of saints, the congregation of saints. Join with the saints and then what do you have to do? Man maaNjee-ai Man means your mind, maaNjee-ai means to cleanse. Cleanse your mind oh brother. Har kai naam nivaas. Har kai naam means the name of Waheguru, nivaas means to dwell in. Then live in the name of God. Make everything you do in the name of God, make everything you do God’s work. Then what happens?

mittai andhaeraa agiaanathaa bhaaee kamal hovai paragaas, mittai means to be destroyed, anDhayraa means darkness, agi-aantaa means ignorance. The darkness inside you, oh brother, of ignorance will be destroyed and kamal hovai pargaas. Kamal means lotus, hovai means will, pargaas means to blossom. The lotus inside you of you heart, of you love will blossom forward.

gur bachanee sukh oopajai bhaaee sabh fal sathigur paas, Gur means Guru, bachnee means his words. Through the Guru’s Word, Guru’s command sukh oopjai. Then sukh, peace, will dwell inside you, grow inside you, oh brother. Sabh fal; all fruits, all things you can desire are satgur paas. The True Guru can give you anything you desire.

maeraa thaeraa shoddeeai bhaaee hoeeai sabh kee dhoor, mayraa tayraa is the sense of this is mine, this is yours, I own this I own that. chhodee-ai bhaa-ee; give it up, my brother. ho-ee-ai sabh kee Dhoor. Ho-ee-ai means to become, Sabg kee means of everyone, Dhoor means the dust of everyone’s feet. Become the dust of the feet of all. Becoming the dust; we get confused here sometimes. We think becoming the dust of the feet of all means to be pushed around by others. But it does not! Becoming the dust of feet of all, means to see God in all, to treat everyone with that love and respect.

ghatt ghatt breham pasaariaa bhaaee paekhai sunai hajoor, ghat ghat in each heart, barahm means the Creator, pasaari-aa means to be, contained. Waheguru is in each heart, everywhere, oh brother! Paykhai sunai hajoor. He sees, paykhai, and listens, sunai, and is ever with us, hajoor. He is with us all the time and he listens and sees everything that one does.

jith dhin visarai paarabreham bhaaee thith dhin mareeai jhoor, jith means on that, din means day. On that day when one visrai, when one forgets Waheguru, one forgets paarbarahm, the Supereme Lord. On that day, when you forget God, oh brother, tit din maree-ai jhoor. Tit din; on that day, maree-ai jhoor; to cry out with pain. On that day when we loose our Amritvela, on that day when we don’t make time for Rehraas, that’s the day we feel the pain. You feel the pain, if you start doing Nitnem everyday and one day you miss it, you feel this pain of not doing Nitnem.

Karan karaavan samratho bhaa-ee sarab kalaa bharpoor, karan karaavan; the Waheguru is the cause of all causes, He is samratho; all knowing, omniscient, oh brother, sarab kalaa; from all angles, all virtues are complete, bharpoor.; fulfilled. God is fulfilled with all virtues.

praem padhaarath naam hai bhaaee maaeiaa moh binaas, praem padhaarath; the most beloved treasure is the Naam; God’s name, oh brother. Because what happens through the Naam? Maa-i-aa moh binaas. Moh means attachment, maa-i-aa means the illusion around us, binaas means broken. The attachment to this world, this illusion is broken through Naam, the name of God.

this bhaavai thaa mael leae bhaaee hiradhai naam nivaas, tis bhaavai; if he pleases taa; then what happens? Mayl la-ay; then he unites you with himself. Hirdai naam nivaas. Hirdai means in your mind, Naam; the name of God, nivaas means to abide. The name of God takes permanent residence of in your heart if Waheguruji wants that to happen.

guramukh kamal pragaaseeai bhaaee ridhai hovai paragaas, Gurmukh; the one who follows the Guru, kamal pargaasee; the heart lotus blossoms inside of that person, oh brother. ridai hovai pargaas. Ridai means inside their heart, havai pargaas; there is an illumination. Inside them there is lightness to them of the truth.

Ma-oli-aa Dharat akaas. Dharat means the ground, the earth, akaas means the sky. The earth and the sky blossom forward in his love.

Gur poorai santokhi-aa bhaa-ee ahinis laagaa bhaa-o, Gur poorai; the true Guru, santokhi-aa; with contentment, with happiness, with peace. The True Guru has blessed me with contentment, with happiness, with peace. Ahinis means day and night, laagaa means attached intobhaa-o into God’s love. Day and night I am attached into God’s love.

rasanaa raam ravai sadhaa bhaaee saachaa saadh suaa, Rasanaa; my tongue, raam means Waheguru, ravai to chant, sadaa; day and night. My tongue continuously chants God’s name, day and night; Oh brother! Saachaa saad su-aa-o, saachaa; true, saad means taste. I taste the truth and I understand; su-aa-o, what is the meaning of this human life.

karanee sun sun jeeviaa bhaaee nihachal paaeiaa thaao, Karnee means with my ears, sun sun means by listening to Waheguru in everything, jeevi-aa means I am alive. By listening to God’s Name I am alive. Nihchal paa-i-aa thaa-o. Nihchal means the unmoving state, the unchanging state, paa-i-aa means to find, thaa means place. I have found the unmoving state, I am not going to come back to this earth again. I have become one with the one who I ajuni, who does not come into life and death.

Jis parteet na aavee bhaa-ee so jee-arhaa jal jaa-o, Jis means that soul, parteet means faith, love, na aavee; does not come into, bhaa-ee; oh brother. That soul, who does not have love for God, oh my brother, that soul jee-arhaa jal jaa-o, that soul will burn in desire, in lust, in ego, in greed, in attachment.

bahu gun maerae saahibai bhaaee ho this kai bal jaao, Mayray saahibai; my Lord and Master hasbaho gun; has lots of virtues. Wahguru has so many virtues, oh my brother, ha-o tis kai bal jaa-o, ha-o means I, tis kai means to Waheguru, bal jaa-o means to sacrifice. I am a sacrifice to God who has so many virtues.

ouhu niraguneeaarae paaladhaa bhaaee dhaee nithaavae thaao, Oh means He, nirgunee-aaray means people who are worthless, with no virtues at all, paaldaa means to nurture. Even people on this earth who never remember Waheguru, who never thank Waheguru, who never attach themselves to the God’s lotus feet, even then He looks after them, even then He gives food to them. He is so merciful, oh brother. day-ay nithaavay thaa-o. To the homeless ones; nithaavay, He gives, day-ay, a place, thaa-o. To the one who has no other place God gives a place.

Saas giraas na visrai bhaa-ee paykha-o sadaa hajoor, Saas giraas means to remember God with each breath and morsel of food. With each breath, with everything I eat, with every morsel of food I eat, with every minute, with every second I cannot forget; visrai, Waheguru, oh my brother. paykha-o sadaa hajoor I see Him all around me, He is sadaa hajoor; always present within me.

Say means those people, nit nit means day and night, marday jhoor means die in pain, crying out. Those people are crying out in pain, look at the world. No one embraces true love for God in their heart, true love for the Naam, and therefore they will suffer, everyone is suffering.

anchal laae tharaaeiaa bhaaee bhoujal dhukh sansaar, anchal means the bottom of a robe, laa-ay means to hold on to, the bottom of God’s Kurta. This is a metaphor saying that I am holding on to God. If you hold stead fast to the Guru you are carried across; taraa-i-aa; the ocean of this world. Bha-ojal dukh sansaar, bha-ojal means ocean of fear, dukh means pain, sansaar means this world. We are carried across the world by holding on to God. If you want to be carried across this world ocean you have attach yourself to God and you have to break away the attachments to this world.

Kar kirpaa nadar nihaali-aa bhaa-ee keeton ang apaar. God has been merciful upon me, he has blessed me. He has blessed us with what? With "nadar nihaali-aa" to be blessed with his beautiful vision, his beautiful grace, oh brother. keeton ang apaar, What has he done? He has himself promised to be with us until the end, until the apaar!

man than seethal hoeiaa bhaaee bhojan naam adhaar. Then what happens? Man means mind, tan means body, has become soothed and calm; seetal ho-i-aa; to become, oh brother. Bhojan naam aDhaar. The only food, Bhojan, I need now is Naam, the name of God, that is my only support, aDhaar.

naanak this saranaagathee bhaaee j kilabikh kaattanehaar. Nanak has come under Waheguruji’s sarnaagatee; Waheguruji’s sanctuary, oh brother. Je kilbikh kaatanhaar, Kilbikh is sin, kaatanhaar means to cut through. Only Waheguruji is the one who can cut through our sins, who can destroy our sins. Only Waheguru is the one who can liberate us, break us from these bonds of Maya.

So what Guruji is saying is, Jap the Naam, meditate upon God, meditate upon the mantra of Waheguru, meditate upon the mool-mantra and your pain and suffering will be destroyed. You will become a king upon this earth and you will be respected in the next world here after.

Mayray man japee-ai har bhagvantaa.
